Walker spent 2.7 times as much as the inept Barret campaign in the recall, and won because he convinced people that he was bad, but not bad enough to recall. http://www.wisdc.org/pr072512.php Even if the John Doe investigation goes away, he's going to have to spend a ton of money to keep his job, which will tap him out for the early primaries.

Haven't they had a hard time recruiting a Walker challenger? Larry Sabato currently has him being challenged by a current Madison school board member. Seems like that's not exactly a candidate that'll win back blue collars. If you think about the profile of what the GOP probably wants next time (Governor from a purple/blue state that can claim"job creation", fairly or not), you've gotta think they're going to look hard at Walker and Kasich, and the Dems need to go big in those races (rather than in, say, Texas).

Kasich maybe but he's got more skeletons in his closet then Chris Christie does. Jobsohio? His work from before? The medicaid expansion kills him off pretty well to. He can claim job creation though alot of north east Ohio is booming right now. Claim one thing walker as done though besides the union busting bills though. Job wise hes horrible for WI and the state is losing more jobs and population then the majority of the country. And what jobs that are there are being killed off in most areas or becoming temp (ask me why I moved back to Ohio

So I haven't heard of it in this thread before but a person I trust on Maryland politics claims that O'Malley's marriage is basically a sham and he's having an affair. Is this commonly known? For what its worth, the person who told me this is a labor supporting Democrat and not a conspiracy theorist.

He can claim job creation though alot of north east Ohio is booming right now. Jobsohio isn't going to be a problem until the Ohio Democratic Party actually bothers to run ads calling it out for the crony capitalism it is. And it's going to take the legal equivalent on ninjitsu to actually get any of the documentation or evidence on how dirty it is to see the light of day--Kasich is probably the best governor at hiding corruption in the US right now. The only way that sticks is if it gets branded in the midterms when Kasich runs for re-election. His work from before won't be an issue, for gently caress's sake we just had Mitt "king of bain" Romney as a nominee. His job creation claim won't be a problem in the midterm at least because the guy he's running against is the Cuyahoga County (Cleveland area) executive who will be able to claim the same strengths as Kasich there along with the fact that Fitzgerald can actually claim to have cleaned up the most corrupt county in the state by a good margin. He's not about to get credit for solving the jobs problem in the foremost democratic stronghold in Ohio. If we're talking about what Kasich will get hammered on in the midterm, it's going to be the following from the left: - Completely hosed up the 3Cs high-speed rail that would have made Ohio into an actual top state. (Cleveland->Columbus->Cincinnati rail line) Did this because he thought he could take a category grant that said "only for high-speed rail" and tried to spend it on freight trains. - Jobsohio, though it will probably never stick - Hilarious anti-choice package added to the budget in the 11th hour - SB 5 and the referendum on it (Kasich lost that one by 12 points in the polls) - Hilarious income tax cut that actually shifted the burden to smaller businesses from bigger businesses - Many of the jobs were in the auto industry--which was saved by Obama, not him. - Crime rates are constant if slightly raised (Casinos along with the gutting of section 8 housing) Now, here's what he'll be running on in Ohio: - Unemployment drop from 9-7.9% in his term. (Basically mirrored the federal one) - Medicaid expansion to curry favor with poor rural whites and close-to-the-city suburbs. - Anti-choice package for the bible thumpers (They weren't to enthuasiastic about him at the start since he openly says he doesn't identify as Christian right) - Increased spending for most schools (ignoring the fact that this actually kept funding levels the same since so many levies have failed in the past 4 years and ignoring the fact that he got a lot of the dollars for this by cutting library and welfare funding) - Drastic increases in city livability (Because Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus are all pouring money into infastructure for once, albeit only in the nice areas of town where people want to live and not near the filthy poors. Also not because of state funding) Here's the funny part. A lot of what he's going to run on to get reelected as governor will gently caress him for a 2016 primary. - Medicaid expansion will rile the tea party up. - Libertarians hate the anti-choice package - Could have cut taxes more by leaving school funding the same - Couldn't break the unions the whole way And in the general, he'd get hammered on all the same points as his gubernatorial campaign, and he'd have to explain why the same unemployment decrease as Obama makes him better than a democrat. Essentially, Kasich would be Romney pt. 2.

In the buttcoin thread in GBS we've seen posts from reddit libertarians on how that bitcoin exchange CEO or whatever who attempted to hire contract killer isn't actually morally culpable for the hits he was putting out, so I think we can pretty easily slate "fine with outlawing murder" into the libertarian-inconsistency category.

What do you guys think of Rand Paul's move to try to bring up Bill Clinton's philandering as some kind of mark against Hillary Clinton? It seems to me the dumbest possible move, one with tons of downside (make a certain number of white middle aged GOP voting women sympathetic to Hillary) and very little upside (rile up the base, which could have been done with the usual code words and dog whistles). I realize he's moved onto the NSA lawsuit gimmick but judgment calls like that Monica Lewinsky one leave me wondering whether he will have any staying power as a front runner if he actually thinks that kind of move is productive.

Early days yet. I'd bet that once the primaries are underway in earnest at least one of the GOP contenders will try to show how they're ready to take on Hillary by taking a shot at the whole Monica Lewinsky controversy and get slapped down hard for blaming a woman for her husband's affair. It's just a matter of who forgets they're not in a safe conservative bubble while having the nation's attention. If anything it might be a good thing for Rand and other Republicans to say some of this dumb stuff now, in places where no one will care, so they can be warned off of it before things ramp up. I doubt anyone'll get much out of digging the quote up two years from now.
