Lurdiak posted:I guess. I just think it's the film equivalent of putting George R. R. Martin's work on the same level as Voltaire, Moliere, Shakespeare, etc. Dumb escapism is cool and all, but it kinda slides off the brain. We really shouldn't have to qualify that stuff on a comic book forum.

Good and bad film's are just subjective and a film being of a certain genre doesn't make it any less legitimate than another. We don't need to be rationalising things on a "is this Citizen Kane or not", they're not video games.

Lurdiak posted:When you call a movie like Thor good you kind of have to qualify it, lest someone think you mean it's Citizen Kane instead of a fun superhero popcorn movie. But apparently people in this thread think the first Superman movie is a legitimately valuable piece of cinema instead of a dumb popcorn flick, so maybe that kind of distinction isn't important? Citizen Kane is ponderous which doesn't automatically make it good. It's a very impressive film but not even Welles' best.

Cadavers4Algernon posted:"Yes, Rosebud green peas. Full of country goodness and green peaness" Wow. Until just now, I never got that was the joke. (That the commercial was really poorly written with no clue for how it would sound when spoken aloud.) Up until this I had assumed the joke was hearing Orson Wells say the word Penis, which is funny. Well that's something new I learned today, and another example of one of those "incredibly obvious things that you never realized until someone points them out." jokes. In other related news about the "good for it's genre, but not Actually good" train of thought, I came across this on my Facebook feed today and it seems related to the argument. http://io9.com/the-real-reason-why-...dium=socialflow http://www.salon.com/2014/02/07/is_the_literary_world_elitist/ The first link is really just a short piece that links to the second link, but it features a kicking picture of a dude in a jetpack so that gives it a pass from me.

Lurdiak posted:When you call a movie like Thor good you kind of have to qualify it When you make any claim of quality about anything you kind of have to qualify it. When it comes to movies, I don't think any one genre should require more justification of its quality than any other. A serious, Oscar darling, character drama is in no way inherently superior in quality to a movie about a dude in a suit of armor flying around. Nor should it get a pass from the same nitpicking scrutiny that you'd apply to a film from the 'sillier' genre. DFu4ever fucked around with this message at 19:25 on Feb 13, 2014 |

It's the part when they're up in the wheel, and Cotten thinks Welles is going to throw him out to keep him quiet. And then the whole "if I offered you £20,000 for every one of those specks that stopped moving..." spiel.

Orson Welles himself believed that Chimes of Midnight was his peak as both actor and director, and I'd be hard pressed to argue with him.

In 2040, people will say "for what it was" to refer to movies WITHOUT superheroes and action and magic. Since all that stuff will be real by then.
