To answer your last question I mainly stick with imperial stouts that are around 10% or more. I drank 2 big cups of those beers back to back and felt nothing from them. They were good but if wanted some weak rear end water I would just drank guinness instead. So when I saw Johan drinking that stuff on stage I was thinking "Yea, drink as much as you want Johan. Not really, he tends to resort to snorting and growling these days. Years of screaming like a madman has taken it's toll. Like so

I've seen quite a few "old man" metal singers perform live, and Eric Adams was the only one that actually sounded he could still sing everything he used to without sounding flat.

How many power metal bands are there that combine the huge wailing choruses, big hooks, and high-pitched vocals of late '90s Stratovarius with some serious old-school riffwork? Usually it's one or the other--if you start looking for more riffs you end up with "macho" bands like Paragon, Stormwarrior, and Iron Savior with much less of the vocal gymnastics. Early Gamma Ray with Ralf Scheepers kind of goes in that direction occasionally but never quite makes it and is mixed with a whole bunch of stupid, silly ideas.

I really don't understand why anyone ever listened to this band when Stratovarius did the same thing much better but their early stuff was never this terrible.

:psyduck: What the gently caress. This is even worse than that "BUT BUT BUT THE CHILDREN" single off the previous album. I couldn't stand to listen to this further than about a third of the way through. Also, I get more and more sick of Tony Kakko's vocals every time I hear him. Whiny little poo poo.

I was going to say Merging Flare, but then I realized they're not really that "riffy". Just euro power metal that sounds crunchier than usual, not unlike older Gamma Ray (funny coincidence, Kai Hansen does guest vocals on that track). Vocalist isn't the usual type of wailer either.
Yeah, I mention them anyway because they're really good and deserve recognition. :colbert:

Well sort of, but I was specifically thinking of mixing USPM riffage like that with the huge, anthemic melody lines of European power metal (a funny thing about Stratovarius--in their first few albums when Timo Tolkki still sang they had some of both, but never in the same song, to the point where "Madness Strikes at Midnight" and "Out of the Shadows" sound like different bands despite being from the same album). Both of those songs are awesome in their own right though, and I have that Helstar album.

I don't know if it's exactly what you're looking for, but I can't recommend Satan's Host more. It's aggressive power/heavy metal with a fairly strong black metal influence and Harry Conklin from Jag Panzer on vocals. They've been around since 1977 and released a couple killer albums in 2011 (one new, one re-recordings of old songs that previously did not feature Harry Conklin) and another excellent one just a few months ago.

First, Dark Medieval Times, The Shadowthrone and Nemesis Divina are all excellent black metal. Most people think Nemesis Divina is the best.

Second, Rebel Extravaganza is a black metal/rock/noise hybrid that's pretty cool.

Third, Volcano is pretty good in a kind of minimal rock way.

Everything after is enjoyable but it sounds like a different band, and isn't on the same level as their early stuff.
