I like this episode and the animation was great, but I have a hard time admiring something just because it has a lot of man hours put into it. It also nags at me a bit that the "all-star" directors and writers probably earn more money than the animators even though the latter are keeping the show afloat mostly by themselves.

Last resort explosion propulsion is great though and just the kind of silly thing I want from a show like this.

Episode 8 of Dandy is written by Keiko Nobumoto, who hasn't done any anime work in about 10 years. She's the main writer on some shows you may have heard of called Cowboy Bebop and Wolf's Rain.

I really enjoyed ep7, but it does annoy me that Wakanim don't add captions to the dubbed broadcast. Crusher Girl's backwards dialogue intrigued me, and I was expecting to have to try and record the audio to decipher it. Only when I checked the subbed version did I realise it was already translated.

It looks and sounds absolutely amazing. There are some real fun moments and I'm certainly not bored while watching it, but afterwards all I feel is just "eh, that was ok." I can acknowledge all the good stuff, but just don't find myself enjoying it as much as I should. I'm going to keep watching, though, just so I could see how wacky it all gets.

I pretty much feel the same way. This show had so much potential and almost everything is falling flat. It's like a masturbatory love-letter to much better shows, except it has better animators than most of those shows got (and deserved more than this).

If Space Dandy had the concept from another show this season and was instead about a guy involved in the Illegal Space Alien Porno Magazine Delivery Service I think it would have turned out much better.

Also, the music is great. When are we getting the soundtrack? I need it.

This. I don't think the show's bad, but it seems like it's directed at a middle school demographic or something. 10 years from now, all these kids will be posting Space Dandy nostalgia threads on /r/anime.

I'm pretty sure not having an over-arching story is about the last issue that people have with the show, the more immediate one being that they don't find it funny to my experience. While I really enjoy the art, animation, designs, music and general story/ideas of the show, I really don't find it that funny personally. I'm sticking around for the other stuff, but find myself forgetting it for a few weeks and watching several episodes in a row. I loved Cromartie because it was hilariously funny and had me giggling almost non-stop for most episodes. This, I chuckle a couple of times and maybe get one big laugh out of most episodes, but find that I watch it with a fairly constant grin but just don't find it very funny. Which is a shame as it feels like it should be more given how good everything else is.

If your issue is the humor, what is the point of bringing it up over and over and over? There's no real discussion to be had since humor is completely subjective, so everyone is just talking past each other. You find the humor to be middling at best, I find it a riot and one of the funnier shows I've seen in a while. That's all there is to say about that.

The cast list at the end didn't include the race announcer, so I have to ask if it's the same actor olaying DJ Sagara over in Gaim of if it's just a case of similar sounding people doing the same vocal schtick?

If you mean the Japanese voice actor, it's DJ Chris Peppler:

Gaim's DJ Sagara appears to be played by Yamaguchi Tomomitsu, so they should be different people.

Yep.

Internets posted:

Notes about the name

Lum's name, character and...ahem, proportions were mostly based upon Agnes Lum, a Sino-American bikini supermodel who was popular in Japan during the mid-1970's. She was well known as a spokesperson appearing in many TV commercials, usually wearing bikinis. She came to symbolize the ideal of feminine beauty of 70's Japan much like Namie Amuro did in the late 90's or Ayumi Hamasaki does for today's Japan, causing many women to hope to emulate her tanned and voluptuous look. Much healthier looking than the emaciated look that has become the ideal of today's Japan. She since settled down in Hawaii got married and has raised a family, but she still makes apperances from time to time. Even though her heyday was over 25 years ago, In Japan, her old photobooks still sell pretty well among the newer idol books.

Long before Tomobiki-cho was around, it was commonly believed among the North American UY fan community that Agnes Lum was a pop-singer from Hong Kong since that what a well-circulated interview with Takahashi had claimed. But evidence suggests that Takahashi might have been misquoted or mistranslated. True in her later years Miss Lum had released a few albums, she was never famous for being a singer, nor was she from Hong Kong. Chances are that someone may have confused her with Agnes Chan. All evidence points to the lovely lady in the pictures above. She certainly looks the part, doesn't she?

It has also been noted in articles about Miss Takahashi that while growing up, she'd often shorten her name and write it down as "Rum" or "Lum" due to the interchangeability of the letters "R" and "L" to the Japanese ear. It's true that Takahashi views Lum as her less inhibited alter-ego. So in a way the character of Lum is also based somewhat on Rumiko Takahashi herself.

Okay, I will grant that I'm given to some hyperbole. Wolf's Rain was not "utter garbage" (see: Witchblade, Zero no Tsukaima, etc. for utter garbage)

However it's so aggressively mediocre (and I'm being painfully forgiving) that it doesn't even merit an entry on the ADTRWiki. That's pretty indicative.

I'm definitely going to watch this show some time because the consensus at ANNcast seemed to be that it was a masterpiece and one of the best anime series ever made. I don't think your opinion is weird though since Annie Hall and Ratatouille are some people's favorite movies of all time, yet I think they are two of the absolute worst movies I've ever seen.

It is decent. I wouldn't go quite so far as to call it mediocre but it's on that line. It has amazing art and a great soundtrack and an incredible setting. But the characters are all pretty one note and there isn't much growth at all. It's also a hell of a lot about travel. To the degree that even Lord of the Rings looks at it and goes god drat take a break sometimes. I liked it, but it isn't something I would recommend to people who aren't furries that I know would get off on the basic concept of people that are actually wolves doing stuff and bitching about being people.

The TV series also got a lot of flak for its non-ending, which the OAV series fixed by and large. And at the time BONES + Yoko Kanno soundtrack kind of had a lot of people expecting something that it wasn't.

Plus a whole bunch of other Cowboy Bebop folks. So, yeah, it had more than a little hype that it probably had no hope of actually matching up to.

Nevertheless, they had an all-star staff that just seemed to phone it in. I stand by my assessment of mediocrity. :colbert:
