I lost it at Prince, yelling at sixth space velocity at the top of his lungs: "I FEEL FUNNY INSIDE!"

This episode reminded me of Redline, in that the space racing was a metaphor for passionate sex.

The Deer Scare. I know it's among the most juvenille jokes of the episode, but the deer scare just about wrecked me.

Episode 8 of Dandy is written by Keiko Nobumoto, who hasn't done any anime work in about 10 years. She's the main writer on some shows you may have heard of called Cowboy Bebop and Wolf's Rain.

I really enjoyed ep7, but it does annoy me that Wakanim don't add captions to the dubbed broadcast. Crusher Girl's backwards dialogue intrigued me, and I was expecting to have to try and record the audio to decipher it. Only when I checked the subbed version did I realise it was already translated.

It's like a masturbatory love-letter to much better shows, except it has better animators than most of those shows got (and deserved more than this).

If Space Dandy had the concept from another show this season and was instead about a guy involved in the Illegal Space Alien Porno Magazine Delivery Service I think it would have turned out much better.

Did you guys not enjoy Cromartie High School or Nichijou or any comedy show that doesn't really have an over-arching story?

LaTex Fetish posted:Did you guys not enjoy Cromartie High School or Nichijou or any comedy show that doesn't really have an over-arching story? I'm pretty sure not having an over-arching story is about the last issue that people have with the show, the more immediate one being that they don't find it funny to my experience. While I really enjoy the art, animation, designs, music and general story/ideas of the show, I really don't find it that funny personally. I'm sticking around for the other stuff, but find myself forgetting it for a few weeks and watching several episodes in a row. I loved Cromartie because it was hilariously funny and had me giggling almost non-stop for most episodes. This, I chuckle a couple of times and maybe get one big laugh out of most episodes, but find that I watch it with a fairly constant grin but just don't find it very funny. Which is a shame as it feels like it should be more given how good everything else is.

If your issue is the humor, what is the point of bringing it up over and over and over? There's no real discussion to be had since humor is completely subjective, so everyone is just talking past each other. You find the humor to be middling at best, I find it a riot and one of the funnier shows I've seen in a while. That's all there is to say about that.

The cast list at the end didn't include the race announcer, so I have to ask if it's the same actor olaying DJ Sagara over in Gaim of if it's just a case of similar sounding people doing the same vocal schtick?

Franz von Dada posted:"Utter garbage" sounds pretty strong. I was under the impression that Wolf's Rain is really good. Not even close. Okay, I will grant that I'm given to some hyperbole. Wolf's Rain was not "utter garbage" (see: Witchblade, Zero no Tsukaima, etc. for utter garbage) However it's so aggressively mediocre (and I'm being painfully forgiving) that it doesn't even merit an entry on the ADTRWiki. That's pretty indicative.

Franz von Dada posted:"Utter garbage" sounds pretty strong. I was under the impression that Wolf's Rain is really good. It is decent. I wouldn't go quite so far as to call it mediocre but it's on that line. It has amazing art and a great soundtrack and an incredible setting. But the characters are all pretty one note and there isn't much growth at all. It's also a hell of a lot about travel. To the degree that even Lord of the Rings looks at it and goes god drat take a break sometimes. I liked it, but it isn't something I would recommend to people who aren't furries that I know would get off on the basic concept of people that are actually wolves doing stuff and bitching about being people.

The TV series also got a lot of flak for its non-ending, which the OAV series fixed by and large. And at the time BONES + Yoko Kanno soundtrack kind of had a lot of people expecting something that it wasn't.

So, yeah, it had more than a little hype that it probably had no hope of actually matching up to. Nevertheless, they had an all-star staff that just seemed to phone it in. I stand by my assessment of mediocrity. Or, maybe I just wasn't the target demographic. Shrug.
