It's true that people like to be told that they are right, but American conservatism takes it to a whole other level. A friend and I went to some Tea Party-like meetups in Florida in early 2010 and it was just a gigantic echo chamber. We were the youngest people there by 30 years, the only minority we saw was an African-American kid one of the speakers had adopted (and later learned that she tried to "give back"), and the "lay people" that worked up the nerve to stand up to speak for a few seconds just regurgitated whatever right-wing media talking point was hot at the time and got applauded. These are not folks interested in learning anything or challenging their own worldviews. They just want to belong to a community of like-minded people where they can tell racist Obama jokes, complain about "where America is headed", and be reassured that yes, they really ARE correct about how they think the world works, and everyone else is trying to ruin them personally. They are insecure and subconsciously know that the world they have crafted for themselves is a rapidly crumbling falsehood. That's why there's such a thick epistemological bubble on the right-wing in America, and you get "unskewed polls" by Dean Chambers, Karl Rove pitching a tantrum over Ohio election results, and Mitt Romney not having a concession speech prepared. These folks are willfully ignoring reality because just shouting their abhorrent opinions with the amp turned up to 11 isn't working anymore.

They're not even the same thing. It's always, always a song with the right. They're not talking, they're singing with each other direct from the Rush hymnal. Rhythms, verses, rhyme, riffs. That's the only structure their poo poo fits into. Obviously the left does a bit of this too when they get together, but one's way more like herding cats for the reason that people are sometimes actually exchanging words and not just shibboleths.

The difference is conservatives start with an opinion and then find evidence to support that opinion, and non-conservatives look at all available evidence and then form opinions from it.

When I think of the Tea Party, I can't help but feel that there is this deep-deep existential crisis going on for them. It's not necessarily just the echo-chamber, but them being terrified of stepping outside of it. Nobody could walk away from the 2012 election and say that the GOP and its ideology weren't suffering from any problems. And it's the end game of reactionary movements such as this to become more reactionary.

Well there is a school of psych thought that says this is actually what everybody does all the time: we intuit and then try our damnedest to support that intuition. But some people challenge their intuition when they fail to find any support for it. It's a mildly uncomfortable process (like learning is), and if you tell people they don't have to do it anymore, they're liable to take you up on it. It was really no accident that America's churches got caught up on the lovely side of politics, that sort of faith+communion is too easily applied to anything you need automatic consensus on. e: I'm not bashing the church, I'm just saying that the right is a church for assholes. agarjogger fucked around with this message at 09:04 on Feb 24, 2014 |

It may not be true for all conservatives but it sure is for a vast number of them, quite a bit more then we'd find on the left. Hundreds of millions of conservative dollars are spent every single year churning out bullshit reports about how their backwards rear end ideas won't do the exact opposite of what they intend. Saying non conservatives don't fall into the same trap surely isn't true but you find a lot less of it among the accepted left and those that do are rightfully ignored whereas a large chunk of the conservative base actively drinks the kool-aid and actively misinforming people is a hundred billion dollar a year industry.
