I got replacement pins because my poo poo didn't work and I didn't know any better. At least pushing it down toaster style worked.

Of course now that I'm rocking it Turbo Twin Famicom style all my pin troubles are over and I can worry about drive calibration instead. The ol' toaster is going to be in storage for quite a while.

RE: NES pin talk, I bent all the pins back into place after my 10chip surgery a while back and doing that also means you don't need to push the game down, just as if you had bought a new connector. I don't really mind that aspect, but it'll take a little getting used to in practice. And since you close the lid anyway, it's not like you have to look at it.

I'm still laughing at the process of having done so, though, I actually tried all the suggestions I heard of tiny screwdrivers or dentist picks(which I actually had), but most things felt a bit too big to reliably use, so I just used a safety pin despite having all of these specialized tools.

Coincidently, one tip I heard was that it'll help the pins last longer being unbent if you actually take the game out when you're done playing. I hadn't actually heard that anywhere else, but it makes a lot of sense so I'm glad I heard it.

Years back I bought an ebay replacement 72-pin and after just a few weeks it turned to poo poo instantly. I put up with that crap for years until I got another NES and a friend gave me a couple of his to replace and to snip the 10chip. Long story short, fixing vs replacing is not even a question anymore. After trying out several tools (including a dental pick too!) I also decided a random safety pin definitely worked the best. I have to say I felt like I was diffusing a bomb after a while because you're so focused.

After the first one (mine of course in case I screwed up) it became a lot easier and really I started to enjoy doing it. The only annoying part of it all was that weird metal feeling you get from handling electronics too long. If I ever had to do more than 2 of them back to back again I'm definitely going to pick up a pair of some $5 dollar store magnifying glasses.

I've been on the mailing list for quite some time now. Been waiting a long time for this. Personally I prefer the DVI connector to HDMI. It doesn't fall out as easily. But it is bad for those looking at connecting directly to their TV with a single HDMI cable. Many cheaper TV's will not allow you to have a mixture of digital video and analog audio at once. This includes the highly recommended gaming TV's in the Sony KDL series. Anyone with an AV receiver should be fine. There were PC video cards that could pass through audio on a DVI connector with a passive HDMI adapter. Not actaully sure how such voodoo worked and whether or not it would be possible here.

All the while claiming 100% Compatibility on the official site. Hyperkin's idea of "100% compatible" must be "cartridge fits in slot without falling out". If they just said "runs the majority of licensed games without major glitches" then I wouldn't be giving it such a hard time.

If I had to guess, the console has a button or sensor in each slot to detect when a cart is inserted, and then immediately starts dumping the ROM to a file. People can correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe the behavior of most of the modern ones is to load the appropriate ROM and then issue a reset to the console so it loads that instead of the menu. However, because the Retron 5 appears to be just using emulators, it wouldn't try to re-read the cart at that point, so it just reloads the same thing.

I think the greatest irony would be if somebody cracks one of these open once they get it, roots it, and discovers that Hyperkin has just loaded up the onboard flash for the console with full no-intro sets for all the appropriate consoles, and they just do an automatic validation of what cart is plugged in via a checksum, compare that to a hash table, and load the appropriate ROM off the internal flash.

Without sounding like a douchebag I agree with this totally and really I almost expect this to happen. My (and univbee's) Retrode performs in a similar fashion and knowing how it occasionally has problems dumping certain roms because of a plethora of variables (sometimes we need to go in and manually set stuffin a config file to force it to use certain info) having all of the roms already on board would bypass soooooo many of this issues it's not even funny. I mean for the average Joe it wouldn't be a big deal, but saying 100% compatible with all games instead of "most games work flawlessly" like they should is just straight up false advertising in my opinion.

Beautiful period correct burn there. I used to play on a Panasonic CRT that was originally bought by an airline company and set up in an airport terminal. By the time I got it, it had a permanent list of destinations with lighter burn in on the times. But I put up with it cause big TVs were expensive back then.

I had a dream that I found a Panasonic Q that played Gamecube, PSX, and Saturn games.

Also some weird Super Mario discs for Saturn that advertised 2-5 extra characters in Mario 64, turned out to be a "virus disc" that claimed it was going to hack my Saturn, but in actuality were a patch for a random game that I don't think exists that let me play this weird art house exploration game as the dog with my human running around behind me barking.

Replacing a Dreamcast clock battery is easy, just make sure you use a rechargeable coin battery. The correct type you want is a cr3032. The internal battery is on the front board with the controller ports, just unscrew the board and unsolder the big vertical disc. Replace with a new battery and you're golden. It'll still pop up with a clock request on the first boot, but after playing for a while it should be charged enough to keep time.

Honestly, the worst part of this whole thing in my opinion is that they're probably using whichever emulator they got the best results with on their test suite of games. What happens if a game works better on a specific emulator or even specific version of one, which isn't provided on the hardware? You're hosed. I want to see somebody throw Speedy Gonzales at this thing and see what happens.
