Isn't that like $800-$900 a month? I know that's foreign country wages and the money may go further over there but that's way less than minimum wage in the states assuming you're working 40ish hours a week.

Is that common in the ESL education industry?

It's fairly common in smaller cities and with public schools and universities. But in those cases rarely are you working 40 hours a week for it. It's usually more like 10-20 for that much; in some cases with no office hours or grading or anything. Most people who do that take a lot of private lessons, which in the big cities are usually in the neighborhood of 200 to 300 RMB per hour. Your mileage may vary. I've interviewed for one who had some bullshit split shift arrangements on multiple campuses which was technically 16 hours per week with no office hours, but which would have meant 3 to 6 hours on a bus every day; for 7000 RMB per month, in Beijing (but with housing, still not worth it).

If you're interested, my company, Maxen, is always looking for foreign teachers. It is a soulless semicompetent language mill where any education that happens is purely accidental; but which is FAR, FAR better than some others I know about or have worked for. The worst thing I can really say about them is that management doesn't give two tugs what goes on in the classroom as long as no one gets hurt, which is both good and bad.

I get 14000 RMB per month (before taxes, which near as I can tell are actually being paid), most less experienced teachers are getting 11k or 12k, for around 20 class hours a week, and 30 hours total. I live frugally (for a foreigner in Beijing, anyway) and usually save about 8000 RMB per month (about 1300 dollars), and that's supporting me and my wife. Note, as a noob without a Chinese person helping you find your way around, everything is going to cost you more. A legit visa is offered if you qualify, but they'll hire you without one if you handle your visa yourself (this is something that I have heard has gotten the company into trouble); but as far as I know if you do not have a degree and 2 years post-college experience at least tangentially related to education they will not help you with a visa.

Oh, if you come to Beijing and seriously want to save money and have a REAL CHINA EXPERIENCE, I also know a place you could live for 200 RMB a month, if there's space available...shouldn't be too far from the Maxen location that's most hurting for people, either.

PM me if you want me to hook you up with HR.

Sorry, I didn't check for responses (this thread doesn't normally get many) and a thank you to Synertia and Video Tapir for replying too.

The job at HUUC is full ride for accommodation (single bedroom apartment), bills and a round trip flight every year. This is meant to leave you with the whole salary (after about Y40 tax) as your own per month after everything - going home included.

If you have an income of Y6000 in Pingdingshan you can easily save about Y3000/month with moderate traveling (a long weekend every two months/six weeks to somewhere close by). If you don't travel then you can save about Y3,500 - Y4000 depending on how you live.

In other words, it is reasonable to assume that you can save $500/month based on an income of Y6000. That's not too shabby.

The job I posted was for *up to 16 contact hours/week* which is great if you want to have time for further study (like me) or are intending to learn the language. I will require you to complete all of the basic admin associated with your courses and there is a general expectation that you'll spend a few hours a week in the office to do this. Basically, if you are a professional then you'll have no problems. You will certainly **not** be working anything close to a 40hour week, think more like 28ish with alot of flexibility outside of timetabled classes.

We are currently two for two with international faculty doing further study and I'd like to make that four for four.

I work 0800-1730 every day teaching or no teaching but I am team leader so one would expect that. Surprisingly for a small university college in China, I am also considered to be a "regular" member of staff and have had a significant influence on a range of things including overseas partnerships and external tests/validations for our undergraduate English program. This is rare, which is why this place is good and why I work here.

We are a bit more serious than Video Tapir describes because everyone likes to do a good job and doing a good job helps people to feel like they're professionals (which they are). But, maybe think 0.6 ft equivalent at a Community College. That's a good comparison.

I have worked at HUUC for two years and will be there for three more (at least) and I wouldn't be posting this unless I believed in it.

Many people who work in the public sector in China also do a few hours in local private training schools a week to get a few thousand extra a month. But I can't comment on that because something something.

A good trick for EFL jobs is to divide (monthly pay) by (monthly hours) and see what you get.

It's not for everyone. Really. I am one of six non-Asian people who live in a backasswards city of 3.5 million. But this little university is trying very hard to be better and if you're all about the teaching then you'll have a better time here than at most anywhere else in the tertiary sector in China.

[edit]

As you can see from Video Tapir's post there's a big public/private divide within China and anyone serious about coming here should explore that.

I am sure that Video Tapir would agree that just because the private sector pays more, it doesn't mean conditions are better or that it's a more sensible option. I have a stonking good degree and postgraduate EAP whatnots to boot and I wouldn't venture into the private sector in China - unless it is goon approved and even then I could and I don't because that's not my priority.

China threads (T&T one especially) are the place for advice on this.

It can be a great experience (so you have a degree in history and a couple of years postgraduation experience in something relevant - hey, I can timetable you for eight hours of American History lectures every week across a semester (one two hour class, 4 different groups). An engineer with some PG TA experience? Want to help me deliver an Engineering specific EAP course with VLE support from our academic partner in the UK?) or it can be terrible (my life is not the same as it was in the US/UK/Aus./etc. and I can't watch sportsgame in favouritebar on Friday night, woe!).

Choose your own adventure.

Public sector isn't necessarily good either. There's plenty of bullshit both ways.

real advice to recent grads with little to no experience: learn tableau -- it's data visualization software and there is a free, fully-featured, public version -- the market is HURTING for minimally qualified data visualization candidates!

Now I do not know whether I was then a head coach dreaming I was a Saints fan, or whether I am now a Saints fan, dreaming I am a head coach.
The job I ended up with uses QlikView (same market as Tableau).

It's not a difficult process. I don't know much about the market (I've got absolutely no reason to take off from my position, so I guess that says a lot about the market actually), but a background in business, economics, and programming put me in a good positive to slip into my role.

I also teach classes in visualization and how to use Qlikview (incredibly intro level. Like people who know absolutely nothing and just getting them to put their legs in the water). My role involves somewhat keeping aware of Tableau and other tools. They're becoming pretty powerful.

Depending on a companies' enterprise situation, Power View (which is Microsoft's SQL/Excel/Sharepoint mash up version of these tools) is really interesting, as well. It seems to have a strong feature set and is built into the software free. Of course like no one has/uses Office 2013 and all of those features, but it'll creep into relevancy over time.

The next version of Tableau has R Integration, so I'm trying to get a full license so that I can use it for visualization projects that can benefit from advanced stats stuff/programming demands.

Jul 15, 2006
Job Seeker

Location: Berkeley, CA. I'm looking for a job that does not require me to cross the Bay. My 13 mile commute takes an hour at best each way, and SF is a little too crazy for me. I don't mind a long commute, but I prefer to drive, and I prefer to park for free.

Education: BA Poli Sci

Experience: I've been working at a non-profit biomedical research institution affiliated with a larger medical school. I started in September 2011 working the mail room. I then Worked my way up to the Grants department, preparing, applying to, administering and managing public and private grants, career awards, fellowships, and subcontracts for postdoctoral scholars and research scientists. I am great at writing and editing, hand holding, and communication.

Looking For: I'm flexible. I would like to continue in the non-profit sector, but I have a diverse background in non-profit admin, HR, recreation, and radio. I'm relatively new to the workforce, so I'm definitely willing to try new things. I am more extroverted toward customers and business contacts, and a little more reserved working with peers. I like an active and stimulating work environment, I am hoping to work toward a more customer service/communication oriented role, rather than a strictly sedentary analyst type desk position.

My favorite aspect of my current position is working face to face with scientists, agencies and sponsors. I found that I enjoy the application/preaward phase of the grant cycle because it allows me this interaction, and I love being able to take part in preparation/submission. Many grant department are split into pre and post award administrators. Our department has each staff member handle the grants from inception to close, and I would rather be more dedicated to the preaward phase of the work. I find that the pre/post award mix really makes for a stop and go working environment, and I prefer the fast pace submission and preparation phase rather than managing the awards after they are funded. While I have learned quite a bit about accounting, I don't think that is the direction I should head. I am dedicated to serving the researchers that I work with, and I love being able to take part in some pretty new and interesting research.

Availability: Any time. I have let my supervisor know my plans to move on, and I will continue on in my position until I find something. I will have a very flexible schedule due to my current situation.

Job seeker

Location: New York City. I'm fine with going to and from wherever the subway can take me, which includes the outer boroughs (although I'd vastly prefer a time-friendly commute).

Education: BA, polisci

Experience: Various positions on several political campaigns at various government levels since 2010. My main area has been finance and fundraising, namely by doing donor research and putting their info on NGP. On a more recent campaign, I did more higher-level work by coming up with fundraising strategies and writing the pitches for donations that were sent through mail and email. I am currently the volunteer coordinator for a state-level political campaign, which involves training volunteers to do phonebanking and canvassing. I also have some canvassing experience. I did similar work for a small political consulting firm, and I also learned how to use Nation Builder and MailChimp there.

Looking for: I feel that my best bet would be to transfer my skills into the nonprofit sector. I figure that I would be best in a development position, especially if it's database-intensive. Two things I'd like to learn about are Raiser's Edge and grant writing. I am also open to working as a program coordinator or a volunteer coordinator in the same sector, although my experience in those areas isn't as extensive as it is in fundraising.

Availability: Anytime. The campaign I'm working on is very slow going so I'm sure that once I get something, I can get out of it pretty easily.

I've given several presentations to very high management (CEO and VP of my company, a 90,000+ employee global corporation). Work closely with operations and other teams to ensure financial uniformity between departments. I have advanced Excel experience, and use an Oracle database on a daily basis. Other software: Wide Area Workflow (WAWF), Exostar.

Looking for: A business finance position in any industry. I know DoD contracting is very niche, but I managed to pick up on that very quickly (after knowing nothing about it) and will not have a problem changing industries. I'm open to any business position, honestly. Sales wouldn't be my first choice but I would even be open to that in an established company, as I work great with customers.

Availability: I can be ready to work in a new city within 4-5 weeks.

Contact: PM me or "S OBRIEN 1 1 1 8 @ GMAIL . COM" (remove spaces)

There are a couple of financial job openings at Carbonite in Boston.

I have no idea if either of them are something you're qualified for. I simply don't know financial job descriptions very well.

Take a look at the list here and if you're qualified for any of them, let me know and I can refer you.

Hand holding isn't something we do very well. When asked to jump, you need to respond "how high?" and being thrown into the deep end happens all the time.

Why would you write this? This is a sign of a terribly dysfunctional company. If I read this, I would turn around and run...

Would you want someone to sugar coat the work environment? I'm just trying to be honest. If you've never worked for a small/startuppy tech company, having to grind and think on your own is pretty much par for the course. It's not like we just feed people to the sharks, but the job comes with a high expectation of independence.

Who are we?
Pamlab, recently bought out by Nestle under the Nestle Health Science division. We sell medical foods currently as our products have changed over the years.

Where are we?
Corporate - Covington/Mandeville, LA (MAP) but also have a few other open spots in GA and IL.

What are we looking for?
I am specifically posting on behalf of our HR dept. for two Helpdesk Engineer (re: basic helpdesk) positions - 1 new seat and 1 to re-fill. Posting is here: here

There are also a few other positions in GA and IL, but I do not know much about these: here

For the Helpdesk position: They're getting desperate to fill these quickly, so the requirements on the job summary are pretty relaxed right now, as we've been getting horrible interviewees recently. One of the HR ladies asked if a morning interview was fine, and the dude said he is not usually up at that time. That ended the pre-interview right there in their mind - don't do this kids my generation (I am 25) :eng99:.

A degree is not required and neither are certs, but they'll help. If you can touch on half of the requirements, then you'll have a good chance. They're willing to train the rest as needed.

What are we not looking for?
English as a first language is preferable, but they did mention going through a recruiting agency since they're getting desperate. Be punctual and have some inkling on how to fix computers and you'll be fine.

How do I apply?
Click the links above, but I would like the referral if you do apply!

PM for any questions, or reply here if you don't have them and I'll send you my e-mail.

Anything else?
There is a bonus plan, 401k after 90 days, Dental, Vision, Health all after 30 days.

To be 100% honest, the manager of the IT department is a horrible person to work under. I haven't personally been under him, but hearing about him from a lot of various departments doesn't paint a pretty picture. This company still has the "old boys club" mentality as they've only been recently bought by Nestle, and they've yet to come clean up the managerial mess across multiple departments.

Feel free to ask any additional questions here or via PM.

If you were just bought and about to go through a reorganization why is this position stable and why is it not going to be eliminated in a month or two?

That's a great question, and maybe recent was a bad choice. They bought us in April 2013 and they have a 5-10 year plan with us for growth and development. One guy recently left to help a friend at a start-up, and the other was an already open position we needed to cover the reps that stay later in the day. We've also been hiring new inside reps, outside reps, and district managers as we are growing our business. One of the HR personnel mentioned that they wouldn't be hiring these positions if they planned on gutting us, as they saw us as an investment and want us to grow.

Hopefully that answers your question. If not, I can hook you up with HR and they can give you a much more concise answer.

Behold the Seeker

I have over 7 years of experience as an online content producer. Basically - a writer of everything on the internet.

I've written pretty much everything from daily content (I had an email list of over 60,000 readers), long form sales letters, email content, video scripts, landing pages, banner ads, google ads - pretty much everything you can see, feel, touch or taste online - if it needs to be written, edited, spoken or mimed, I've done it at least a dozen times.

I've also done extensive editing work on all of the above.

My main concentration is in copywriting, but I've researched and written financial reports, been in front of and behind the camera for "webinar" events that I wrote, created campaigns, done product launches, interviews both as interviewer and interviewee...

In short, if you need someone to write something, edit something, or brainstorm a way to write or edit something for online consumption, I'm your guy.

I am the veneer of content smeared onto the internet's tubes and diodes.

I'm located in Vermont and I'd prefer to stay here. I've worked on a ton of projects for clients who aren't in Vermont, but I'm looking for something more permanent and steady than freelance work.

I'm seeking any kind of company that needs online content. It could be a consumer reports blog, a media outlet, a product portal, a niche online publisher - anything that relies on frequent, quality online content.

Ideally the work would be constant, hectic and deadline driven.

Availability: I'm working on a few different contracts right now but I can be finished relatively soon, as in a few weeks.
