  The helmet structure is just about finished - did a test shot with some black cloth I had lying around, of course in the final version it will be blue. All in all, well pleased with it so far. Will probably incorporate a black veil as well in the end. Still trying to figure out what to do about the ponytail though. Also, drat but my peripheral vision is entirely hosed. Thanks! I'll see if I can check them out - My only concern is figuring out how to give the ponytail enough support to make it arc without looking too weird. Will probably put a few support wires or maybe lines of EVA foam or something.

 The majority of the pieces for my partner's costume have been painted, distressed, and are ready to connect! First time using resin, and wonderflex, but I think I've got it down now (Thanks to a couple of resin experts in this thread). My only fear is that, when my partner puts everything on, the costume won't be reminiscent of Leia at all - I took a chance of reshaping the bra into a more spaulder-like shape (since they'll be strapped to his shoulders), but hopefully people will get the idea while we're walking the con floor. Of course, I've still got a giant to-do list and, what, two and a half weeks until Emerald City? Oy.

I'm undertaking my first cosplay project, with the ultimate goal of getting to DragonCon, or at least a few of the local/midwest-y cons (Chicago, Cincinnati, Columbus, Louisville, Lexington). I'm not going as a character, per se, but will be constructing a Valkyrie costume. I'd like to have major parts of it (excepting spear, shield, leg gauntlets) assembled by late April/early May, in preparation for Paganfest (May 2, Columbus, OH). Coming into the project, I have experience with chainmaille and a little bit with sewing. I anticipate leatherworking to be the major difficulty for me, because I'm coming in without any background and will be learning as I go. Thus far, I've broken down the project into its constituent parts, and have done some minor sketching/planning. I have a $500ish budget, and am confident I can finagle a decent looking result with that price. 1 - helmet (with wings) 2 - shield 3 - spear 4 - cloak/cape 5 - small scale maille chestplate/tunic (to contain my Valkyrie bosom) 6 - leather gauntlets 7 - leg gauntlets (is there an actual term for these?) 8 - skirt/under-chestplate comfort Norse mythology and legends are a passion for me, and I don't know much - if anything - about Thor (the Marvel character, not the god). My objective is to avoid (well, as much as possible) the assertion that I'm a genderbent Thor. The traditional iterations of the costuming would entail a red cape, brass/bronze metallurgy, etc. (inspiration from Romantic artwork). The pieces for the shins are called greaves and pieces for the feet are called sabatons. This sounds like a super fun project to me! I think if it were me and I wanted to avoid Thor comparisons the number 1 thing I would do is change the color of the cape, maybe to a purpley wine tone. Avoiding the 4 discs look on the chest will also go a long way but I have a feeling that winged helmet + red cape will give people a Thor impression even if the rest of the costume looks nothing alike.

Got the bases of the shoulder pieces finished - I guess I'll add some simple ornamentation, but I'll keep it minimal. One shoulder will be obscured by the cloak, so it doesn't need any detail. Most of the real detail work will be done in the painting phase anyway. I think I'll work my way down the arms next, try and get the upper arms, or at least one of them, done tomorrow.

Excellent! Thanks for the terminology. I'll be sketching out the greaves + sabatons over the next couple days. The cape color is easy; I'll give that a change. The winged helmet is an iconic Valkyrie prop/element, so that's not going anywhere (Marvel Thor pilfered it from traditional portrayal of them, actually (sorry spergin')). The first things I'm going to make is the spear and the gauntlets/greaves, since I'd like them to have some shared characteristics and materials. When I see how the gauntlets/greaves go, I'll start seriously planning the helmet (have some basic sketches already drawn up). Yeah I was going to suggest going in the opposite directions with the helmet wings. Thor usually has dinky little flappers on his helm. If you went with glorious widespread wings, etc. that (to me) would really scream "Valkyrie" what with a good cloak, sword, and all. Good luck!

If I were doing a Valkyrie I'd do it in totally un-thor colours, maybe gold or copper for the armour as you mentioned from the classical/renaissance paintings, and white for the fabric parts. You're escorting successful warriors to Valhalla, you can afford to look a bit ostentatious and have some bling on display. There seems to be about a 50:50 split even in the older artwork on whether they have angel-like wings or not. Those would most certainly de-Thor you, though large and good looking wings can be expensive to make and tough to maintain and transport.

I put together my own "Fünhilde" costume a few years back. Had a head dress with feather looking wings, disco ball bra and leather armor pieces over a pink/ purple dress. I also did double braids and had a staff with a goofy disco ball Christmas decoration. I think armor+ head dress+ woman= Valkyrie style. People usually get what you are unless they don't know what a Valkyrie is. Adding fur or something can help too to get a more nordic look.

So I'm hoping this is the right place to ask this, since it's relevant to the topic at hand. I'm going to be cosplaying Ryuko from Kill la Kill at Otakon, and I need a way to transport the scissor blade. I'm going to be flying in from (most likely) Albany to Baltimore, but all the bags I own are too small for the one I'm planning on getting -- the blade is going to be 41 inches long and 8 inches at its widest point. Plus I don't really trust shipping it down to the hotel since I'm afraid it might get lost in transit. Since I'm flying Southwest and they let you check in the first two bags for free, I was thinking of something along the lines of packing it in a separate tote akin to a ski bag (with proper identification for TSA purposes and such), but the vast majority of ski bags run afoul of the '62 inches and under' rule, and I don't want to wind up with any extra charges  Any suggestions?

I ran into a similar problem with my greatsword - of course, mine was well above the size limit, so I had to shell out $150 to take it with me on the plane. But I'd just recommend making your own packaging out of cardboard and bubble wrap. You can control the dimensions pretty well in that case, and if it's really on the borderline of 'oversized' or not, maybe if you beg and plead the check-in person enough they'll give you a break. Or, alternatively, you could just have Ryuko carrying her itty-bitty version of the scissorblade.

I would suggest calling your hotel and asking if you could ship it there. You'd still have to find a box for it, but I imagine the shipping cost would be less than what the airline would charge?

Got some old velvet curtains of ebay for Brienne. They're a tad more orangey than the references in some lights, but I figure I've got a decent amount of wiggle room as the dress is in like three scenes all in horrible lighting and in one case heavily weathered, so no one really knows exactly what it should look like in normal conditions. They're cotton velvet and kinda rough so fit the period type setting really well too. Gonna grab a yard or so of the second fabric tomorrow then I'm good to go, the curtains were lined so I already have roughing out fabric and stuff for the areas of the dress that need lining, and I have a set of eyelet pressers for all the lace up bits and some really realistic faux fur for the trim. Other than the curtains, the most expensive part of this thing is gonna be the haircut...

So for the upcoming Gold Coast Supanova I'm going to try and do my best at a Frank West. Already got the camera so I'm 90% of the way there, right? Going to get some foam tomorrow (hopefully) and work on a servbot head, which I may just keep on the shelf it it gets too hot on the Saturday. Pondering building a defiler, but don't know if it'd be out of character, I guess Frank West did do combo weapons in the sequels/DLC, but I am at an impasse.  It could be cool to do some 'erotica/horror/outtake' type placards, but at a certain point I don't know how to carry all this stuff.

  Finished up the upper arms today (There's a left arm too, but no point in photographing both) - I think I'll actually be making the lower arms from scratch, rather than rebuilding the other gauntlets that I have - building on top of the old ones would make them bulkier than I'd like. I'm especially fond of the overall shapes of the design - the pauldron blends very well with the contours of the arm. On the inside of the armour I made a few laceholes that I cross-laced with an elastic band, so that the armor sit snugly on my arm - I'm drat pleased with the overall shape, but a little frustrated because I've got to make another supply run before I can make much more progress. I vastly underestimated how much EVA foam I would need. Got to pick up more elastic, latches, zippers, etc... So, all told, I've completed the base foam for: Head Shoulder x2 Upper arm x2 Still leaving: Lower Arms x2 Chest Back Waist / Upper Thigh / Skirt / Chainmail Shinguards x2 Feet x2 That's a long drat way to go. And once those are all built, then I've got the long, arduous process or glue-priming, applying resin, sanding, painting, detailing, weather.... I shall not lack for things to do. God it's good to have a hobby.

You could try some kind of roofing sealant like isoflex, it even comes in black. It's kinda toxic to work with though (all dem isocyanates), so if you don't have the right safety kit or work space, latex is a good alternative, and can be coloured with acrylic paint mixed in with the liquid latex, with a wet-look top coat it would be very tarry. It might have trouble sticking to the armour though, that will very much depend on how you paint it. Don't mix acrylic paint with PU resin, it will retard the cure (ANY water in the paint will react vigorously with the MDI part of the resin, which is bad news) you can get special pigments designed specially for resin, mix enough in and you'll get to black. It'll be brittle though, and might flake off If you want the cloth parts to also look tarred, latex would be perfect for this, or platinum cure silicone if you're allergic. Latex CAN be mixed with paint, as mentioned, while silicone will again need a specialist pigment.

You can usually find paint additives that can be added to acrylic to change the texture. Maybe even something like elmer's glue with the black paint added could get that look.

Sewing seems to be more my forte than armor, not that it will stop me from continuing to attempt it. I have a massive armor costume planned for next year. Gilgamesh from Fate Zero. I think the only thing that bugs me about it on me is my shoulders, due to injury I haven't been working them out like I need to but fortunately that is temporary and will be fixed and not a problem eventually.

Check out your local hardware store, near the rolls of normal electrical tape. It comes in a little can with a built-in applicator brush. It's kind of pricey (like $8-9 for a 4oz. can) but it dries in like 5-10 minutes and has a nice shiny flexible finish. it looks VERY tarry when dry. e: ok, here we go, samples on canvas and craft foam:  It loses some of its shine if you spread it too thin on fabric.  Works great on foam! Sticks well, stays shiny whether thin or thick!  Just get some airflow, it's like nail polish from hell when it's wet.
