Trying to develop my death metal tastes some, so I come to you guys for recommendations. I enjoyed the new Artificial Brain record, but what I really like is Disma's album Towards the Megalith. I didn't go for Gorguts' latest too much, though it had some good songs. I'd like something not super technical, but still varied in tempos and stuff. Generally I'd prefer to listen to more recent stuff, but if there are some essential classics I'd be fine with that.

Seconding Incantation and Funebrarum. Also check out Dead Congregation.

I heard Babymetal for the first time today, am I the only one that thinks it doesn't actually sound very different from your by-the-numbers metalcore/melodeth grey area crossover band? If the voices were a slightly lower pitch I doubt I would be able to tell the difference.

Eh, it's just pretty run-of-the-mill Manowar-worshiping macho power metal. This is on a completely different, transcendent plane of shittiness.

I've heard about Babymetal from a lot of people and only one of them is a metal fan, and his taste is notably indiscriminate. Yeah, it's not good metal (certainly not good death metal), and it's not really very good pop either.

Yeah I had the same take on that video, sounded pretty by-the-numbers, nothing that sounded exceptionally bad.

I think the worst metal is when you can hear a really talented person in a band that sucks. My friend always jokes that he wishes Van Canto would break up so we could get 3-5 new metal bands with decent vocalists instead of one mediocre band with a shitload of them.

Good example would be Artas who are mediocre even for generic metalcore but they have a great drummer who really needs to get into a better band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqWOuRTJg_Y

Also bad is bands that release good poo poo and then just sort of peter out. Like Ablazer released an awesome demo in 2010: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWSCH6GsfqA and then after that just released some new stuff but it wasn't very good, were briefly signed to a label that tried to make them metalcore for like four months then they left and released more new stuff but it all sounds very Cradle of Filth/Soundtrack to your Escape era In Flames and doesn't have the really forceful punch their early stuff had.

I feel like Van Canto is one of those things that has to exist so there isn't more than one of them

I feel like that's not an uncommon thing for that sort of band, a local power metal band I've mentioned before, Engage, had a terrific demo but then released a generic EP and then broke up. Leprechaun's demo is amazing too, but I've always thought the vocalist's work in Elvenking is boring. I think sometimes bands have a limited number of amazing ideas and they just get concentrated in that first demo/album and then they're stuck trying to recreate them.

I had to check if anyone actually signed Messenger and of course it's fuckin Massacre records. I'm convinced they're a money laundering front or something because there's no way anyone actually keeps buying albums from the five hundred shoestring budget eurotrash bands on their roster.

I think the vocal work in Elvenking has more to do with symphonic metal fans eating that poo poo up. It's kind of like Nightwish in that I admit that the vocalist can sing well (I really like The Winter Wake barring like one or two songs) but it's clear he just doesn't do it all the time. It's also clear it's an artistic choice of some sort I just really don't like it (for the Nightwish example, Nemo sounds pretty awesome, Over the Hills and Far Away sounds silly to me in comparison).

I should have said I think Elvenking is boring, and I'm surprised the vocalist stayed with them because the Leprechaun demo was way better than anything Elvenking ever put out. The vocals don't differ much.

Any of y'all in the mood for some melodeath, give the new Whispered album, Shogunate Macabre a go. This stuff sits somewhere around the Kalmah - CoB - Mors Principium Est - Wintersun axis, spiced with some Japan-themed stuff (no anime bullshit, don't worry), and some loving amazing Be'Lakor level melodic hooks.

If any of you are into metal with ten thousand extra folk instruments, Metsatöll have a new (nsfw) video out. It's, uh, somethin'.

They had the whole album streaming on soundcloud a few days ago but I lost the link to the full playlist. This track is pretty cool.

Never heard of Disma but that album is good and reminds me of Cosmic Atrophy a little. If you can enjoy some melody and lots of notes the new Unhuman is my favorite thing in a while. Those are recent, but also check out Disincarnate's Dreams of the Carrion Kind.

I'm not familiar with Estonian folk music and I might just be a whore for bagpipes, but it seems to me Metsatöll are a lot more creative with their approach than most folk metal bands. They don't fall into the trap of repetitiveness or covers that are nothing but folk song but with guitar, which even the better folky bands do a great deal. I like Týr a hell of a lot, but you can't tell me that this is an especially ingenious reworking of this.
