To those that care: It looks like Angela Gossow is stepping down as singer for Arch Enemy and being succeeded by Alissa White-Gluz, from The Agonist. My kneejerk reaction is disappointment, as I really loving liked The Agonist, especially their last album, while always being kinda lukewarm on Arch Enemy. Apparently, The Agonist will still go on, with Vicky Psarakis replacing Alissa, and hopefully this'll end up being a good move for both bands :sigh:

As for Plebeian Grandstand, I posted a track in the Hardcore thread, since they seem more hardcore/metalcore than metal to me, but Lowgazers is a great album and inching into my AOTY list. One guy described it as if Deathspell Omega was a hardcore band, and I quite like that descriptor. Gaza plus The Secret is another good summing of Plebeian Grandstand. Also more on the screamo side of the fence, but definitely check out Celeste as well, they get brought up every now and again.

On the topic of Japanese metal, a few years ago someone in this thread posted a live video of a band called Gargoyle who wore costumes and played kind of a speed/thrash/power metal thing. I've been trying to find that video again ever since, anyone know what I'm talking about? Video was like 6ish minutes long.

I brought these up to a half japanese classmate a while ago and he said when he was in Japan they were opening for Edguy and came on stage wearing clearly cardboard armor that was spraypainted with silver paint. I love old Galneryus but it's definitely in a guilty pleasure way. I can't remember which album it was off but the first track had a music video, and one part of the song just had basically each member of the band do a 45 second long solo on their instrument. It was like a perfect encapsulation of what to expect from their songs.

Have no idea what their new stuff is like though, ever since their singer left the band apparently the style has shifted? Also they are doing videogame and anime soundtracks now it looks like, they're doing remixed tracks for the new Blazblue game and did some songs for Mnemosyne which I never saw.

I apologize in advance for this post. Uhh hey guys remember Swarrrm? They put out an album everyone seemed to love in 2007 then just disappeared, but apparently they're still active. I dunno if it's the language barrier but way too often Japanese bands just sort of drop off the map with no explanation.

Crowbar
Power Trip
Exhumed
Midnight
Speedwolf
Moab
Windhand
Jex Thoth
Lord Dying
Pins Of Light
Hot Lunch
Black Sheep Wall
The Well
Nekrogoblikon

With a few more to be announced (including two headliners) so it looks like I'll be going to that for sure. Loved the last one in Pomona.

On the subject of this year in metal, Behemoth's The Satanist is shaping up to be one of my favorites so far. It's not exclusively a metal band thing either. There are loads of Japanese bands where I have a couple of albums from them I REALLY liked and it's just impossible to find out if anything else has ever happened, if the band members went off to form new bands, if the band is still together. I hope it's just the language barrier and not the fact that nobody cares :v:

Woah what! The first 3 albums are weird for me because all of them took a really long time to grow on me, but all of them eventually became some of my favorite albums. They're all different enough from one another that I had to abandon my assumption on what the album was going to be and just accept what it was, doesn't help that they usually take 4 years to release one. I never got to that point with Marrow of the Spirit, to me it felt like instead of being something unique it just felt like an inferior version of their earlier stuff? I think I didn't give it much of a chance.

I definitely feel like Marrow of the Spirit went for a prog-black approach like later Enslaved. It was a hit-or-miss album for me but definitely had its moments. The whispered vocals during Black Lake Nidstang and To Drown were pretty rad.
