There is so much crazy stuff in there that we'll remember forever. This thread is a testament to that! There is so much bland, kinda lovely, unoffensive wrestling out there. I'd rather have the crazy garbage than that.

Not counting the internet only PPVs or the PPVs in Japan, North Korea or Germany, there were 95 total PPVs. Of those 95, there were 13 times the WCW Champion didn't even appear. Once was Souled Out 1998 where there was no champion at the time and the title wasn't up for grabs during the show. There were 8 instances where the WCW Title was vacant going into a PPV, but 7 of those times, the title was decided in a match on that show. Of the 32 PPVs where Hogan was WCW Champion going in, he did not appear 10 times, including 3 in a row starting with Spring Stampede 1997. The other 2 times where in late 1998 when Goldberg was the WCW Champion (Fall Brawl and World War 3). Of the remaining 82 times that the WCW Champion appeared on PPV, he didn't defend it 18 times. The 18 times include 5 WarGame Matches, 2 BattleBowls, 6 tag matches, 2 non-title matches where the champion lost, 1 non-title match where the champion won, 1 three team single elimination match, and 1 match where the champion (and 7 partners) lost to a 2 man team.

It's worth noting that he wasn't convicted, on the grounds that he was unaware that whatever he was given the night before (either a cigarette or a joint, I think?) had been soaked in PCP. I believe he did have to pay the cops' medical bills, though.

Just for comparison's sake I looked at the WWE PPVs from WrestleMania 1 through WrestleMania 17 (the same month as WCW's last PPV). There were 108 WWE PPVs, not counting England only shows or supershows that were not offered on PPV in the US. Of those 108 shows, the WWE Champion appeared on 106 of them, with Shawn Michaels being the 2 exceptions. The first was In Your House 11 where Michaels was not on the 2 hour show, but did wrestle in the dark main event. The second was No Way Out of Texas where Michaels was advertised to appear in an 8 man tag but was injured and did not appear.

Until Goldberg comes along even squash matches get time. Too much time! After that the matches still get time, but at least someone is squashing jobbers quickly.

As a young wrestling fan totally not smart to the business those longer jobber matches just made WCW's jobbers much cooler than WWF's. Like I had no ideas what a "jobber" was and it took me awhile to piece together that these guys were paid just to lose. Young me just thought they were working their way up the ladder and any Saturday Night the Armstrongs could get their big win. When someone like Prince Iakeua won the TV title or Billy Kidman won the CW title it just sort of hammered that idea home to me. In comparison the WWF jobbers just seemed to suck and stood no chance at all, except that Kid and that time Barry Horowitz got lucky. But mostly those guys just got killed so I just assumed WCW's losers were better. Seriously, I used to sit there watching Armstrong brother matches rooting for them, utterly oblivious to what a mark I was. You could never do that with WWF jobbers.

Spring Stampede was a really good show with a couple exceptions. It was pretty lovely that Hall no-showed and their best solution was to do a singles match for the tag titles and the Prince Iaukea push is getting really awful. The Rey/Ultimo opener was great, and DDP/Savage was better than I remembered. Savage is too. Maybe it is because of everything I know about him now, maybe it is because Liz is just his evil manager rather than fantasy booked into a role every jealous ex wants, or who knows. When I was a kid he played the unhinged role perfectly, but drat, now it is even better. That match felt like a proper grudge match, something we don't get enough of today. Both guys were limited, but they worked around those limitations and the ending worked really well. Add in a crazy post match angle and the whole PPV made it feel like you saw something happen. I also really loved the way Giant tagged in Luger to get the #1 contendership. Normally I'd hate someone passing up a chance at the world title, but they've been pushing really hard that Giant and Luger are friends, Giant wants to make amends for his past and that Luger has the best chance of anyone on the active roster to beat Hogan.
