Well, I've got a paycheck about to land in my pocket. Let me know if/when you put up that thread, in the meanwhile, my current project is turning a gun case I got cheap into a pedalboard. For which I need to go to the hardware store, get a tape measure, measure the thing, THEN go back and buy materials to reinforce it...and I'm in an apartment, not like I can just set up a circular saw. Anyway. e: poo poo, new page, content. Here, have another stupid Fender! The Performer! Sliiiightly too quirky to be cool. hexwren fucked around with this message at 05:05 on Mar 17, 2014 |

Dewgy posted:srv was a cool guy but he's not exactly someone to idolize or emulate, since his playing style was pretty much "cocaine", and anyone trying to replicate that sound is gonna end up sounding ironically soulless because they themselves didn't grow up hanging out with a bunch of old southern blues guys like srv did, you just end up with big dorks trying to imitate a big dork rather than a big dork doing his best to show off to Albert King very, very well said.

srv's best playing is on let's dance (the album not the song) and his lack of songwriting chops tends to hold him back from carrying an entire song with anything other than some tasty riffs it's the same problem rory gallagher had, only worse

All this talk of bluesdads, but I find them pretty harmless. Its the solo fingerstyle dads that I encounter all the time that bother me. Can't play 2 consecutive bars in time, always trying to push Andy McKee party trick wank music on to me. The holy grail of guitar is alternating playing bass notes with the thumb and vocal melody with the other fingers and punctuating everything with the percussive string slap. Here they go nuts for Maton guitars which I think are pretty solid. Got to have the Maton like Tommy Emmanuel for a couple thousand $AUD.

Agreed about Andy McKee, but I'd add Justin King to that list too. But Fingerstyle acoustic is sick as gently caress as long you actually play harmonies. The problem is the drony bullshit that has no harmonic movement. I remember the first time I heard Andy McKee and thought it was cool for about 30 seconds before the same thing bothered me (the drony bullshit). It's just flat and boring. I'm all about tapping but not in the metal style as much. Dave Knudson is one of my favorite guitarists and does some crazy poo poo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjI5znoKko8&t=1m30s (back in a hardcore band, he's the only guitarist, crazy breakdown) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3a4jxt4hcs&t=1m14s Then he got more chill and joined Minus the Bear. Between him and Tom Morello it makes me want a Whammy pedal.

Fahey and Kottke are about as good as it gets for fingerstyle, IMO. If you somehow haven't heard Kottke's debut album here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6HgQHj-zb4 Check out Davey Graham for a blend of folk, middle eastern and classical. Dude was bringing that over right around when Coltrane was for jazz.

I like a lot of solo fingerstyle music don't get me wrong, I'm not making GBS threads on that approach to the instrument. Just the dads that drop thousands on boutique Australian acoustics as beginners and are fixated on bad fingerstyle playing that's more party trick novelty than music.

I've always loved the kind of fingerpicking they did in 70s British Folk. Davey Graham is great. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAT5T1lj6WE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QC5gebGthAs I thought Andy McKee was the poo poo when I was 15. Oh my god.

There's a music store somewhere in Bristol that has a Distortocaster in the window but I was never allowed to play it.

Had some other things to finish, but put together my SHO today. It's hard on time. Also holy poo poo these blue LEDs are bright. I'm talking light-up-the-room bright. Fixed with a simple change in resistor but I wasn't counting on that originally. I also just went with random placement of everything and didn't measure anything before drilling. eh, whatever.

I'm posting this not because he was bad, but rather that Flamenco really avoided some of the traps 80s guitar laid for artists.
