Tamarillo, as long as I'm getting interviews from office jobs, I'll keep applying. I liked doing administrative functions for my political fellowship. Sure it wasn't even a part-time position, but I was good enough to get a letter of a good letter of recommendation from the candidate. That's not to say I'm applying to that kind of work exclusively. I'm also applying to other places like retail, restaurant, and fast food. In fact, I just got an email from Olive Garden: they want to schedule an interview with me.

So... Benny did you actually GET that letter of recommendation? Because the last that you've told the thread here is:

...Funny story about my campaign letter: I don't have it. The campaign manager, Jon, told me that he sent an email way back in April saying that my candidate was gonna hold a picnic to celebrate and hand out the letters...which I missed completely :cripes:. I've been trying to get a hold of Jon for weeks now and he won't pick up. Email, texts, phone calls, it doesn't matter. So all I have to go on my campaign volunteering is a contact. I need that loving letter. I've tried to contact my candidate directly but there's a lot of run around since he works in a county office. It's why that's not on my resume.

He was good enough to get it, had he shown up to receive it. Of course.

Which is like saying "I would have gotten a participation award if I had participated in the award ceremony, but I was hungover so I didn't. But I would have, that's the important thing."

I'm not sure the letter would have counted for much anyway - I expect that everyone gets a "recommendation" letter, regardless of their actual ability - but it speaks to Benny's inability to properly prioritise following through on poo poo. He'll become obsessed with the trivial while ignoring the potentially important.

Even more interesting is that he "hasn't been able to get hold of" anyone to mail out a letter to him. This shouldn't have been difficult and it kind of makes me wonder whether Benny's attempts at contact are being actively ignored for some reason.

quote:

The letter, if it ever really existed, would now be a year old.

Which renders it pretty much useless.

Benny's resume is going to look like Swiss cheese, with lots of big holes in between occasional very short term activities. He really needs to do something - anything - for longer than a couple of months because right now the picture he's painting to potential employers is of someone who can't last at anything for more than a few weeks. There's not really anything he can point to which demonstrates that he has the potential to be a reliable, responsible employee even in the short-term.

So if Benny's mom caught him looking at porn and freaked out and his kink is adult baby porn do you think it's possible she actually caught him watching that kind of porn? Goddamn, that's actually more embarrassing than any other "parent catching me jerking it" story than I can imagine.

Mentally ill people incapable of/unwilling to engage with the social systems in place to help them? Sure.

They probably didn't become minor celebrities on the strength of being fired from a department store and writing a few short stories and lying a bunch, though.

Nice knowing you, BKPR.

I kind of suspect at least part of Benny "ignoring" this thread's advice might be a facet of his low-effort-itis. When he comes back to post on the thread, he probably might just be reading the last page before replying, leaving most of the "Benny just posted" serious replies to never have been seen.

Benny, you'll need to click the orange "apply now" button. Don't get distracted with stories. You're not there for creative writing, you're there to apply for healthcare.

Or you can just admit that you were covered under your parent's plan all along.

No way. He reads it all. He just cherry-picks. I can't explain why he still bothers replying, though. Would be easier if he just... stopped. He could still participate in Thunderdome, it's not like the mods are (probably) going to ban him if he doesn't come in here and spew lip-service occasionally.

When he started the thread his mum was the only one working and it sounds like her job wasn't all that well paid (she was studying to get her teaching credentials). He mentioned his dad working mowing lawns after that, but his comments about being unable to afford medication and mental health services make it sound like the family income is still very low (I assume the city's services were means tested).

From what he's posted, his brother is still unemployed and his sister's a student. I don't know whether family income is adjusted for dependent children when it comes to health insurance.

At 24, would his family income even be taken into account if he's applying for subsidised/free health insurance (there must surely be a point at which you're regarded as "independent" even if you're still living at home)? Even if Benny's parents do have health insurance, isn't the option to have your children covered until they're 26 only an option - presumably nobody can make you keep your adult children on your coverage, regardless of whether they live at home or not.

It's my understanding that they can claim him as a dependant as long as they pay half of his support, which they no doubt doing. Considering his parents have 4, possibly 5 depending on his brother's situation, dependants and his father's income presumably is not being reported to the IRS I would assume they have no income as far as the government is concerned.

So, no, there is no reason Benny can't get healthcare as I see it.
