Let's not forget Loudness who were definitely the first metal band from Japan I ever heard of.

I definitely feel like Marrow of the Spirit went for a prog-black approach like later Enslaved. It was a hit-or-miss album for me but definitely had its moments. The whispered vocals during Black Lake Nidstang and To Drown were pretty rad.

I love Marrow of the Spirit. Black Lake Nidstang and Ghosts of the Midwinter Fire are amazing tracks. Excited to hear the new album even though Faustian Echoes didn't really grab me at all.

My thoughts exactly, though Black Lake Nidstang isn't such a clear favourite for me (that would be Into the Painted Grey).
Faustian Echoes is solid Agalloch, it just kinda gets lost in the haze of all their better stuff.

I'm really excited for the upcoming album, because the track kinda sounds like something off Pale Folklore with better production, and Pale Folklore is my favourite Agalloch album.

Looks like Leprosy is the next remastered Death album. Comes out late April.

Here's the remastered version of "Pull the Plug".

I just want to say: I hope my housemates are enjoying the new Teitanblood album as much as I am. It's loving brilliant. So many great moments and I've only listened to it twice so far. Expecting it to grow on me like Seven Chalices did. Can't wait for the new Dead Congregation to compliment it!

Why does Metallica keep making such long songs? They don't really manage to accomplish anything in 8 minutes that couldn't be done in 3 or 4.

Dave Mustaine and Megadeth may be poo poo these past couple albums but at least he hasn't tried to make any 10 minute radio-friendly rock ballads... yet.

Anyways, here's somethin that I was introduced to earlier today. It's pretty good no-nonsense oldtimey thrash-death (or whatever) and I figured someone in this thread might appreciate it too:

I listened to that whole thing and now, ten minutes later, all I remember is that it was second-rate riff salad and pretty long. I would O How The Mighty Have Fallen but it's been like this for the majority of the time Metallica has existed.

God what a bad Metallica song. Bland riffs, generic guitar solo, too slow of a tempo, overpowering vocals, and way too long. It sounds like a Death Magnetic track that got rejected for being too boring.

It's sad that the recent crop of Metallica stuff has made me wish they were still a mediocre radio friendly hard rock band. In retrospect I would rather listen to Until It Sleeps than whatever that 8 minute long borefest of a song is. But Metallica has always had issues with riff salad. I remember back in the day reading an interview with the band where they were asked what they would do different if they could and they universally agreed "make Battery 5 songs instead of one song with 5 songs worth of riffs."

Since people have been talking about Japanese metal recently, is there any Japanese power metal that's actually balls-out METAL with really forceful vocals and an emphasis on guitar riffs rather than treacly J-pop-influenced singing and synth overload?

Being one brief song with a whole truckload of riffs packed into it was what made "Battery" good. If it were a series of dreary one-riff wonders the resulting songs would be nigh unlistenable, much like their recent crap.

The new Metallica song is godawful; even the intro goes on twice as long as necessary.

Anthem, Sex Machineguns, X Japan and Loudness, definitely. Maybe Onmyouza?
Galneryus and Versailles have fantastic riffs, too, cheese be damned.

Honestly, asking for Japanese metal that doesn't have any Visual Kei-style vocal and synth cheese is silly since the scenes overlap so much. I love that poo poo - wouldn't be listening to Japanese metal if I didn't.

Sex Machineguns for sure. They're quite hit-or-miss, but have plenty of really killer songs with plenty metal riffing if you can sift through the weird crap. They're pretty wacky too. They kinda remind me of a slightly heavier/thrashier Japanese Edguy.

My relationship with metallica is so long and deep that I still get a little bit genuinely pissed off when people talk poo poo about them (however justified). I don't think I'll ever not love them. In the same way as I'll always love, like, Ace Ventura Pet Detective. That poo poo was hard wired into my developing brain. I am incapable of parsing that new song in an objective way because gently caress man it's metallica. I wish kirk hammett was my dad.

Seconding the recommendation for Anthem, specifically their album Heraldric Device. Vocals are... from Japan. Riffs are solid.

I get hating on new metallica, although I thought death magnetic was pretty good - but I can't handle when guys start making GBS threads on stuff pre-black album because they don't like new Metallica. Or when as said above (jokingly?) people give all the credit of their earlier works to Mustaine and Burton. If Mustaine was such a good song writer why did it so rarely show up on Megadeth albums! :nyd:
