Honest question. My game is heavy on crunch, and I've written rules (intended to be at least semi-competitive) in 'rules-ese' so that the rules are explicit, but not necessarily easily played without being taught the game. I think this is pretty common of a lot of hobby games of course, but I'm editing it to be better about that. Can I include supplementals, such as character sheets or examples-of-play, in excess of the rules if they are purely supplemental? Edit: Thank you! Is there a limit for how many of these things we can enter? assuming it's just 1 per edit: well even if it is I'm going to post this anyway! It's a modification of a very barebones system I ran a oneshot with once. Mostly diceless. I wrote it after a summer helping my mom teach Bosnian refugees English. They had some really rough stories. It's called "You are young children in a heartless place" and it is about as happy as it sounds. here it is! here is a screen friendly version! If you can only enter 1 thing I def enter Hell Vice instead, but I thought why not put this here. It's bare and unfinished, but I don't really have the stomach to fill in more. o jeez thanks guys Now I'm torn about which one I want to enter... I'm still leaning Hell Vice because it is a lot of fun to play and Heartless Place is Not. I haven't played it with people irl, only online, and even then it was pretty brutal. I'm having oodles of fun with this so I'm making another called MODEM JOCKEYS, about being a fearless Cracker in the glorious beige-and-punchcard future of 2013

My non-Goon housemate TeaCrusader wanted to submit something for the contest, so I hope this is eligible and doesn't count as account sharing otherwise. I would have just posted it, but I don't want to take credit for something that isn't mine. This is Lost Skies, a game about a recently deceased person becoming a ghost and having to resist infernal energies called the 'Rhapsody' to avoid becoming a demon. Conebonwah nerds. I don't know why you insist on roleplaying all these weak losers that Goku could totally beat up. In my game you can make strong deep characters who listen to real music like Linkin Park. Twice as Bright (Dropbox .docx, Kludged together PDF on Drive) "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long." – Dr. Eldon Tyrell Twice as Bright is a diceless roleplaying game designed for 3 or more players that touches on the themes of finding yourself with dwindling resources and facing the inevitability of irreparable failure, and examines the choices characters make when faced with these facts. A player's character sheet is also the physical manifestation of their character outside the game world; as a character expends resources, they get to rip and tear it up and crumple it into a ball to throw it into the recycling bin as they play. There is no specified setting for play in Twice as Bright, although its inherent themes make it a good choice for games such as:

I couldn't come up with a good balanced way to do powers and it ended up far too complicated (though it did have a sort of secondary hp total that I called the Shame Track, for when someone got in a sick burn or you did something shameful) and I scrapped it. So glad you did this. Probably a silly question, but would you mind someone running a game of this on the forums?

It's now May 1st, so submissions are closed. A huge thanks to everyone who entered; I'll admit I was a bit worried at first because it didn't look like there were going to be a lot of entries, but people really stepped up and we have some amazing games here. Of course, now I have to playtest them. I'll be hopping into IRC over the next few days to try and get some games going; hopefully it won't take too long for me to run through everything. Again, thanks to everyone who entered!

Yes, I'll provide at least some feedback on everything. Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to have time to do playtests at this rate. Unless people want to volunteer for that...

I would volunteer! I know how hard it is to test it yourself, so if we can scrounge up a few more players, I'd be willing to run/participate in PbPs and test 'em.

I was actually able to play my submission recently, which if not very useful here was enlightening. A friend GMed, and the table really got the vibe I was going for with it, which kind of spiraled into a Harry Potter meets Superjail thing. All in all, any night spent in discussion of the Luchador Dimension is a fun night.

Spekhogger posted:I was actually able to play my submission recently, which if not very useful here was enlightening. A friend GMed, and the table really got the vibe I was going for with it, which kind of spiraled into a Harry Potter meets Superjail thing. Well, since you've resurrected this thread, I've done a little bit myself. I can't exactly play anything by myself, but I can make character sheets! MACHEWARRIOR PROS: Coming up with piece names is a lot of fun. There's a lot of variability and customizability available. For example, I made mechs that were weapons-based, movement-based, health-based, etc. The weapon effectiveness thing is intriguing, although I'm concerned re:putting an Ace as your chassis piece. Does it only work once, then? If you get hit in the chassis again, do you die? CONS: I think it's a little too open-ended. I think the parts on your ship should have more crunch, as should gameplay and combat resolution. There should probably be more required pieces on a mech, too. One of my mechs has a chassis and three weapons. All well and good, but if, say, the aliens took to the air, that mech would be worthless. Lost Skies PROS: A lot of it is super-inspired. I love the soul cores and their names. They definitely guide me towards roleplaying and character design. I think the Spirit system is really cool, as is the HP arch and the key memory dealy. Once I started making characters, I made more and more and more 'cause it's so much fun! CONS: Why are both Soul abilities and Rhapsody abilities called "Talents?" It's kind of confusing. One should be, say, "Gifts," or "Approaches" or something like that. (Also, this may just be because combat is more common than social behavior, but I found coming up with Gifts really hard.) I think what the demons/Rhapsodies are should be a little more clear. The pictures on the outside seem to suggest something like a Persona or a ghostly Other, but that doesn't always seem to match with how the system plays. Lastly, I fear that the system might be super-easy to game. (See: X, the Demon Cultist.) Giving people the freedom to choose their Gifts and Talents means they may choose things that are very vague and easy to activate all the time. If I get the time, I may doodle around some more with the other ones. Save the Date looks interesting, as do Twice as Bright and Drowns the Skies. Actually, I've got some comments for that last one (I'm afraid people will mostly focus on preparing and almost certainly never experience), but I'll need to playtest it before I'm sure.
