I just wish that the coloring was totally flat instead of it trying and failing to force shape and mass onto huge areas of no detail whatsoever (Gigantic Doom's chest and arms, the gatling gun, etc...).

Pretty poor use of gradients there, yeah.

I like what they're TRYING to do with the stylized art, but I'm not sure they're entirely pulling it off. The later posted panels look pretty good, the first appearance of the giant doom looks really bad.

Yes, this is the biggest thing killing the art. I don't think the gradients were this bad in the previous issues.

Fried Chicken posted:I still like the idea in 2099 that Doom is a legacy villain, that he takes a Kristoff like apprentice, raises them to be like him, and when he is weak he has the apprentice kill him and switch identities. I remember a great old What If? where Doom became Sorcerer Supreme instead of Stephen Strange. At one point Strange arrives looking to fix his hands and Doom chops them off and replaces them with metallic ones, and the Ancient One berates him for failing to recognize Strange's potential. Later Dormammu attacks the earth and Doom is mortally wounded stopping him - all the heroes of earth who consider Doom the most selfless and noble hero want to save him and he asks to be taken to Dr Strange who he claims is the only one who can save him. Strange - a success in his career but spiritually empty as a person - assumes that Doom wants him to try and fix his physical injuries but Doom says that he knows he is dying, and admits that he sensed the potential in Strange the first time they met. So now he wants Strange to take over as the earth's defender and be the new Sorcerer Supreme. Strange is confused, and then Doom hits him with the kicker as two Doombots arrive and physically restrain Strange and carry him off to a prepared machine that is going to empty Strange's mind and replace it with a copy of Doom's. The final caption is something along the lines of,"For Doom knew that the earth must always have a Sorcerer Supreme..... and it must always be Doom."

Didn't one of those series also have a running gag about everyone thinking Sue Dibny was pregnant, then the issues in question ended up coming out after Identity Crisis?

Sue Dibny died, Blue Beetle died, Elongated Man died, Mary Marvel... dying would have had more dignity, Captain Atom ditto, Maxwell Lord went evil, died. You know what I thought was the worst part about Countdown to Infinite Crisis? It starts off with them killing Blue Beetle. Okay, that sucks if you are a fan of Ted Grant. Or Ted Grant himself, I suppose. BUT...now we have a good starting point for a story. And now we get a really good "putting the band back together....for revenge" story. The 80's Justice League all agree to get back together, and it's being done fantastically. Booster is so annoyed at himself for not being there. Fire and Ice are broken up. And Guy, gently caress man he's ready for a fight. Hell, they even think about bringing back Max Lord not realizing he's the one responsible. This is fantastic stuff. They talk about wanting to capture the person responsible for killing Ted, but we know that when they confront the mastermind, he's going to be put into the ground. And the question is, who is going to do it? Who will cross the line. Will it be Booster, taking down the man who killed his best friend? Will it be Guy on the basis that one of his crew got whacked and you just DON'T mess with Guy or his friends? Will it be Fire, to remind everyone that long before she got her super powers she was a trained killer and someone not to gently caress with? Which member of the 80's League will be the one to get their hands on Max first? The answer is none of them. Max Lord is killed in the middle of a Crossover by loving Wonder Woman as part of yet another attempt by DC to justify her place as a number one headline character alongside Superman and Batman. Meanwhile the 80's League just get chumped while fighting OMAC's and Rocket Red dies...or something. I just hated that part of CTIC so much.

The Question IRL posted:You know what I thought was the worst part about Countdown to Infinite Crisis? It says something about how long DC's been going downhill that you mix up Wildcat's name with Blue Beetle's. They're both Teds, both nonpowered humans, and both got screwed the gently caress over, though, so I guess there's a lot in common there.

When I was typing out my post, I did mentally think "Ted Grant? Am I sure that's right. Maybe that's someone else, the Boxer guy. Maybe it's someone else. I should probably look it up." But then I just shrugged and figured that my point would still stand. I also had a similar moment when I was debating about if Booster Gold's name was John Michael Carter or if that was someone else.

(Source, an Action Comics issue that went to the UK for some reason.) I actually went looking for a Wonder Woman cover because Superman and Batman get all the crazy silver age cover love, but I saw that one and had to use it. Shockingly, most of the Wonder Woman covers I was finding were kind of creepy in retrospect. Wonder Woman thrusting a spear she's holding between her legs at a monster while tied up (actually, now I kind of want to google that entire phrase and see how many hits I get). Three Wonder Women about to make out with Steve Trevor. Teenaged Wonder Woman turned into a furry. Wonder Woman shoving a phallus into a dinosaur as she's out shopping in a mall. Teenaged Wonder Woman struggling with a tentacle monster that says he's going to own her. Most of these are consecutive months, by the way.
