The thing I've learned is to be careful what you say. If you tell them that things are managable under certain circumstances, they will write that down as "Has absolutely nothing wrong with him" and chuck you off until a tribunal calls them on their poo poo. It's happened to me twice now and though I won my appeal both times, I had to sponge off family and deal with months of rent arrears afterwards. I've got to go see them next week so I'd be interested in hearing any better advice anyone has because short of slashing my wrists during the assessment, I have no idea how to avoid them ignoring everything I say for a third time.

First off, be aware that they will happily let you stew until the week of the interview then cancel it with no reason, so you may never have to attend...

There's not much to it, other than the terror.

You turn up at the day/time so appointed, wait 2-3 hours*, go into a room where some fraud claims that they have a 'medical background' (they don't) and then asks you questions from the list of indicators, they may ask you to demonstrate things like how high you can reach, etc - if you answer yes to the incontinence questions they WILL ask to see your nappy, even though that's totally inappropriate. They will put down the least-effected way of interpreting your answer. They will ask how you got there, and use that to potentially mark against your claims of mobility issues, along with a smug 'well, you managed to get here today'.

If you, by any unfortunate event, collapse/faint/have-a-heart-attack during the interview, you will be sent home by taxi, and they will mark you as 'did not attend'.

* Note that they always seem to have some office problem that results in them running massively behind, and they WILL offer to reschedule you to another date, if you accept that offer they WILL mark you as not attending and you will likely be sanctioned have your claim(s) stopped until the rescheduled day + a week or two for the decision, so if you can manage to wait it out, do so. (They will, eventually, admit that their rescheduling will be passed to the DWP as a 'did not attend', and slime their way out of a 'will it affect my claim' question by stating that THEY do not make any determination about your claim, but will usually eventually admit that the DWP can put a stop on your claim until you do attend)

Main thing to remember for it is that there'll be a lot of questions that ask for how many hours a day/days a week etc. your brother needs assistance, weather it's mobility or personal care, and how much of it he needs. DO NOT answer as though he's having a 'good day' or a 'good week' or whatever - always tell them what it's like when he's having a 'bad' day or week. If at all possible, don't even mention the times when he can deal with things better than normal.

Basically, don't be optimistic about your brothers condition during the interview, always keep the worst case scenario where he needs the most support in mind and base all your answers off that.

It could well be the same for whoever accompanies him into the interview, so be prepare for that person (weather it's you or someone else) to feel pretty crap after the interview as well.

One more thing - when talking about the support your brother needs, always try and mention the financial cost of that support too. For example (not sure weather this applies for your brother or not), if he can't take public transport alone then bring up the extra costs that come with getting him around i.e. petrol, extra bus fares for people who accompany him, etc.

Hope things turn out OK!

Find and speak to your local autistic trust, have them prep you for the interview. It's not quite full-blown Freeman bullshit but there are ways to word things to be lawyer-proof, and the autistic trusts right now spend a lot of their time getting people used to this.

In my case the interview was a breeze because I went full-blown psychotic a few days before and the idea of me in the workplace must have screamed liability, but the subsequent re-assessments have been no problem with just the odd bit of briefing so as to be clear on what ATOS are looking to hear about what I'm entitled to.

Also didn't ATOS get fired or did I have a particularily pleasant dream?

A good bet is to check out the DfE teacher training site. It covers both entry to Initial Teacher Training or if qualified overseas what steps to take to get certified here.

If your friend is going to apply for ITT, then they will need the equivalent of English and Maths GCSEs at C or above (to teach primary you also need GCSE Science at grade C), a degree (for secondary teaching it'll have to be relevant to the subject they wish to teach) at at least a pass, but you will struggle to get onto a training course with less than a 2:2 and for some courses there's a huge amount of competition. The options for actual ITT courses ranges from the traditional PGCE (university based training) to School-based training (SCITT and Teach First). SCITT tends to be run by private companies, but you approach the school first and get the school to sponsor your application.

I don't know the procedures for overseas qualified teachers, except that their training/certification is very similar to SCITT except it may be very short or even just an assessment.

If you go through ITT, you gain QTS after one year and then you have to do a one year probation (NQT) which is done as an employed teacher. Failing this results in being barred from teaching, so it's best to find a good school where you'll get plenty of support and a decent mentor. As far as I know, overseas qualified teachers who gain QTS don't need to go through NQT.

I did ITT in 2011/12 through a company called E-qualitas, and was based in a primary school (I did the now defunct GTP) and got paid a salary to train. I would only recommend this to someone who is absolutely certain they can study on their own, I found it very difficult and wish I had gone the university route (I think the PGCE is superior for theory/support, but gives less in class experience). I've found that for instance my behaviour management is much better than most recent PGCEs but my teaching experience was limited by only training in one school (with a six week placement in a second school), whereas PGCE students get more varied classroom experience at different schools.

E-Qualitas is a fairly decent trainer and they also do trainign/assessments for overseas qualified teachers, it might be worth contacting them for advice.

If you have specific questions I'd be happy to try to answer them but I know there are more experienced teachers and teachers with secondary experience here too.

Thanks time-travel bud! She's looking for schools today.

CAB reckon you can record the interviews if you ask first, and it's what I would recommend, on top of all the other excellent advice given. Provided your brother have the medical evidence/history there, then he will probably get what he applies for, but he will probably have to fight tooth and nail.

I support the amendment in principle (despite it probably being against EU law) but as far as I can tell Labour proposed that amendment with no plans for how to fund the extra expenditure, but it would probably necessitate cuts elsewhere.

I dunno, they've been happy to cut other areas to fund things they're prioritising: cutting college funding to pay for universities comes to mind. I agree that they are further to the left of Labour but then again I'm a paid-up Communist Party of Britain member so my idea of what counts as left-wing is probably a bit skewed. :ussr: If they're standing a candidate in my area I'll vote for No2EU partly because of restrictions on workers' rights like that one, the idea is to get us out of the economic union and austerity requirements and stay in the ECHR and Council of Europe. Otherwise Green - I get the impression they're doing pretty well in Edinburgh at the moment but we'll have to see how the actual vote turns out.

Nigel Farage was accused of being a divisive racist in a car-crash interview this morning that his most senior aide attempted to halt.

People “know” which foreigners make good neighbours, Mr Farage suggested, as he struggled to justify his opposition to European immigration while being married to a German.

Patrick O’Flynn, Ukip director of communications, attempted to stop the slew of questions as Mr Farage was challenged about his party’s expenses.

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/d..._medium=twitter

quote:

Nigel Farage has just appeared on the James O’Brien show, and it’s one of the most amazing radio interviews I’ve ever heard.

It started with the Ukip leader attempting to defend his party over charges of racism. It ended with his Communications Director Patrick O’Flynn interrupting the interview live on air and then, according to LBC staff, physically dragging him out of the studio off camera.

What happened in between has effectively finished Nigel Farage’s political career. To understand why, you have to listen to the interview in its entirety. In particular, the moment when O’Brien pulls the Ukip leader into another attempt to defend his statement that people would rightly be alarmed if a group of Romanians moved next door.

First Farage denies he said it. Then he repeats it. Then he implies Romanians are criminals. Then he claims they’re people traffickers. The killer moment comes when O’Brien asks him what would be the difference between Romanians moving next door and Germans, citing Nigel Farage’s own German wife and children. Farage responds: “You know the difference”.
