I know people here have talked about being assessed by ATOS so would anyone be able to go over the process? My brother has autism and has been getting DLA and is now called up for an assessment by ATOS, after all the horror stories I'm pretty worried.

First off, be aware that they will happily let you stew until the week of the interview then cancel it with no reason, so you may never have to attend... There's not much to it, other than the terror. You turn up at the day/time so appointed, wait 2-3 hours*, go into a room where some fraud claims that they have a 'medical background' (they don't) and then asks you questions from the list of indicators, they may ask you to demonstrate things like how high you can reach, etc - if you answer yes to the incontinence questions they WILL ask to see your nappy, even though that's totally inappropriate. They will put down the least-effected way of interpreting your answer. They will ask how you got there, and use that to potentially mark against your claims of mobility issues, along with a smug 'well, you managed to get here today'. If you, by any unfortunate event, collapse/faint/have-a-heart-attack during the interview, you will be sent home by taxi, and they will mark you as 'did not attend'. * Note that they always seem to have some office problem that results in them running massively behind, and they WILL offer to reschedule you to another date, if you accept that offer they WILL mark you as not attending and you will likely

Geokinesis posted:I know people here have talked about being assessed by ATOS so would anyone be able to go over the process? Main thing to remember for it is that there'll be a lot of questions that ask for how many hours a day/days a week etc. your brother needs assistance, weather it's mobility or personal care, and how much of it he needs. DO NOT answer as though he's having a 'good day' or a 'good week' or whatever - always tell them what it's like when he's having a 'bad' day or week. If at all possible, don't even mention the times when he can deal with things better than normal. Basically, don't be optimistic about your brothers condition during the interview, always keep the worst case scenario where he needs the most support in mind and base all your answers off that. a glitch fucked around with this message at 13:03 on May 16, 2014 |

It could well be the same for whoever accompanies him into the interview, so be prepare for that person (weather it's you or someone else) to feel pretty crap after the interview as well. One more thing - when talking about the support your brother needs, always try and mention the financial cost of that support too. For example (not sure weather this applies for your brother or not), if he can't take public transport alone then bring up the extra costs that come with getting him around i.e. petrol, extra bus fares for people who accompany him, etc. Hope things turn out OK!

Geokinesis posted:I know people here have talked about being assessed by ATOS so would anyone be able to go over the process? Find and speak to your local autistic trust, have them prep you for the interview. It's not quite full-blown Freeman bullshit but there are ways to word things to be lawyer-proof, and the autistic trusts right now spend a lot of their time getting people used to this. In my case the interview was a breeze because I went full-blown psychotic a few days before and the idea of me in the workplace must have screamed liability, but the subsequent re-assessments have been no problem with just the odd bit of briefing so as to be clear on what ATOS are looking to hear about what I'm entitled to. Also didn't ATOS get fired or did I have a particularily pleasant dream? HortonNash posted:A good bet is to check out the DfE teacher training site. Atos assessor simply made up the assessment, outright ignoring what was said, evidence given e.t.c. so there was no obstacle to a 0 point assessment (from 20+ before) and her ensuring that her "hounding the disabled into an early grave" stat was solid that week. CAB reckon you can record the interviews if you ask first, and it's what I would recommend, on top of all the other excellent advice given. Provided your brother have the medical evidence/history there, then he will probably get what he applies for, but he will probably have to fight tooth and nail. gently caress atos and gently caress whoever puts their name to this abhorrent system designed to make the disabled/sick suffer, makes me wish I was a theist so I had some hope of a hell for them to end up in.

I support the amendment in principle (despite it probably being against EU law) but as far as I can tell Labour proposed that amendment with no plans for how to fund the extra expenditure, but it would probably necessitate cuts elsewhere. I dunno, they've been happy to cut other areas to fund things they're prioritising: cutting college funding to pay for universities comes to mind. I agree that they are further to the left of Labour but then again I'm a paid-up Communist Party of Britain member so my idea of what counts as left-wing is probably a bit skewed. If they're standing a candidate in my area I'll vote for No2EU partly because of restrictions on workers' rights like that one, the idea is to get us out of the economic union and austerity requirements and stay in the ECHR and Council of Europe. Otherwise Green - I get the impression they're doing pretty well in Edinburgh at the moment but we'll have to see how the actual vote turns out. That was pretty brutal. However I was reminded at times of the question time with Nick Griffin where the main issue is sometimes they don't let the loving interviewee actually answer a question. Continually interrupting them is lazy and makes it easier to defend the interviewee instead of letting them give an answer and then just blasting it to pieces (as was done a lot in that interview just not as much as I had hoped) Let them hang themselves with their own rope.
