Was Zalatar supposed to be a more significant character in Barkley 1, considering he has a character portrait and theme music (which was then recycled into the final boss music)?

Cicero posted:It's been more than five months since regular, peasant-level backers have gotten a development update. Do you mean a kickstarter page update or something else? I'm not exactly sure how the updates work or who receives them, but I suppose I can throw some vague and unsatisfying update here and say that we (read "we" as "Gortarius") finished up a first draft of a rather big area about a week ago. It's 50+ maps and translates to something that is probably bigger than the first quarter of bakely1. Probably. Now it's just a matter of filling it up with garbage/content and ghastly foes. I noticed there was some recent additions of new NPC dialogs that are completely loving ridiculous, and they are almost funny too! Lots of new toots also, similar unlistenable dirges as the ones before. I'll see if I can hypnotize them to do a ToG stream in the near future. Liquid Dinosaur posted:Was Zalatar supposed to be a more significant character in Barkley 1, considering he has a character portrait and theme music (which was then recycled into the final boss music)? I don't think he got his own theme. A long time ago, 2006 or something, I went to this website called Fur Affinity and told them this sad story about how I was always bullied and abused by the people at my school, but found myself through marching in a turkey costume at Thanksgiving parades. It was so inspirational for someone that they drew a picture of my turkey persona, Zalatar, looking forlornly into the distance, haunted by the bullies of his past. I decided to use that picture in the game, but Zalatar was always just a minor character. The part where Barkley gives away Zalatar's feather is my favorite part of the game.

Yeah, you're right. Even though the changes and additions have been incremental over the last few months, added up they're huge. Mechanical changes, areas, enemies, quests, all sorts of things. I feel like people want "WE ADDED 500 NEW QUESTS TO THE GAME" and not "we have a wading system now, you can walk in water but it slows you down". I feel like we've had better and faster progress in the last few months than at any point in the whole process even if it's not as interesting. Anyway, we will have an update soon.

"Cyberdwarf has three unused portraits, all of which show more of his hair. The first portrait is lighter than the other two, while the third one adds a border and some 'pupils' to his eyes. There is a fourth unused portrait, which is just the final one that has been moved down a pixel by accident." How do they know it was an accident.

I'm checking out these Two Friends Play vids of Bakley1, and I don't understand where they get this viewerbase when the other guy communicates by yelling and going "Ooooooh maaah goooooood" all the time, and for this particular game smashing through all the dialog which is the thing that makes the game good. If I hadn't played through the game I would have to stop every 2 seconds to read the dialog boxes that flash by. It's really annoying. For contrast, there is this youtube lets play of bakely1 from years ago by a guy called Lotus Prince, the most hyped up guy for barkley 2, which has a handful of problems like some occasional audio goofs and a mouse cursor in the middle of the screen in every video and a really awful opening in the first video, prompting anyone to shut down the video right then and there, but if you get beyond that it's pretty entertaining because they don't just smash through everything. Quite opposite actually. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm just human garbage. Who knows..... In other news, got the Dwarfnet prototype up and running proper. I guess that's something. Now looking at gameFAQ and IGN boards for some good material.

If it's any consolation, they seem to be deeply, DEEPLY in love with all of the the RPG/battle mechanics, gushing about enemy placement and such. That's something that I think often gets overlooked, Barkley was really FUN to play, and not just because of the excellent writing and music.
