PS2 and on FFs only have longer completion times because better hardware means 5 minute unskippable music videos and A LOT more side content. The FMVs I could do without but there's nothing wrong with optional content and that's where I get all of my enjoyment from tbh because the "main" game of FFs are all easy baby games.

If you beeline for hotspots and skip cutscenes then X2 is as short or shorter than any previous gen FF. But going for 100% makes it a 55 hour affair. What you guys are complaining about is that the post-game stuff has gotten more voluminous which is true but not a bad thing at all.

That's true, in a lot of the earlier games, the final boss was the most challenging thing in the game. Final Fantasy V added Shinryu and Omega since it's a silly idea to have the most difficult thing in the game also be required to finish it. Even if you're dumb and just stick with Freelancer the entire game and grind to beat bosses, you should be allowed to see the ending.

Trying to define what people do and don't want from games is kind of meaningless and silly, since people want different things. Some people only care about the story, or at least the overall experience, and see the game slapping the story out of their hands and forcing a challenge on them as a negative.

That is a very modern perspective. Until somewhere around the fifth and sixth console generations, generally the prevailing wisdom was that in order to complete a game you should be required to get good at it.

Personally, I play RPGs to be told a story, and I appreciate that the most challenging content is optional and I can see all of the plot without pushing myself. I generally will, but I like having the choice.

It doesn't mean I don't appreciate games that expect you to get good, such as Platinum's games or the Souls series, but this approach does cause a lot of problems. For instance, people getting frustrated by the final boss in Metal Gear Rising, because they had never learned how to properly use blade mode. Personally, I would have preferred it if the game rewarded getting the Zandatsu both very quickly and in as few slashes as possible, rather than spending time chopping the enemy into more bits for extra points, as this would have encouraged people to use the accurate slicing.

Even RPGs with lengthy tutorials like FF VIII and XIII have trouble explaining the mechanics to players, and once you've gotten far enough in the game using the wrong tactics, it can be frustrating to come across something that requires an entirely different playstyle. There's no right answer to this situation, since your options consist of simplifying the gameplay, or forcing people to participate in tutorials.

Or a slow difficulty ramp-up, so you have to keep improving, but there's never a massive spike.

That's very hard to get right though.

This is what FF XIII would have been, outside of the Eidolon fights, and the mechanics they never tell you about, such as getting a full ATB after a certain amount of time. This is very hard to do in a non-linear game, though.

Man, I played up to the last level in Metal Gear Rising, then got distracted. I came back about a year later to try and beat the final boss after all my skills had totally atrophied and I didn't even know what buttons did what. So I got my rear end kicked by the first couple forms of the boss and had to try and beat the last form with like 1 health item. That... took a few tries.

FUCK THIS SHIT
So I just beat FFV Advance. Tt was a really fun game, not too hard but never too easy either, probably one of my favorite Final Fantasies. However...

I did not know that if a party member was dead at the end of the final boss fight they would be removed from the ending. That's interesting and all, but that is a really mean trick to any one who might take the ending at face value and not re-do the final boss.

Four job fiesta sounds like fun, I think I'll do it when it starts!

I've managed to get Tidus' final weapon no problem (I got really lucky with the racing I think), finally grinded my way to Auron's weapon, and now I have my sights set on Wakka's.

I've recruited Brother, but other than that I don't really remember what are the other 'must have' players. Can anyone shoot me some tips as to who I should seek out? I'm thinking I'm also thinking that I would like to get it normally, without doing the reset glitch, am I insane or is it something that isn't super far out there.

Just gonna quote myself from something I typed somewhere else

quote:

You just need to hire the best players, the Aurochs are USELESS until very high levels. The best thing to do is actually reset stats every time, then hire the best starting players. I didn't lose a single tournament/league doing this:

Goalie: Miyu - In the moonflow, wearing all red. Best Goalie that you can get easily, the only better goalie is Nimrook but he always starts on the Al Bhed team. Can techcopy Super Goalie right away and also has very good CA.

Mid: Brother - endgame, you need the airship. Amazing at a lot of positions, early levels he is one of the best Forwards since he's so fast and has a good Shoot stat, he can zoom by defenders and score. His shoot doesn't level up much but the other stats do and he becomes the best Mid position in the game.

Forward 1: Tidus - Very good, make sure you did the minigame to get Jecht Shot. It's basically a free goal every time once your shoot is high enough, most teams can't stand up to you throwing the ball then getting rid of 2 defenders right away.

Forward 2: Wedge - Guard outside the blitzball stadium in Luca. He has an amazing Shoot stat at level 1 but I think his leveling is pretty bad. It's ok because you are gonna reset stats to start from 1.

Defender 1: Ropp - Best defender in the game pretty much at all levels. He's in the Rin's Agency inn in Mi'ihen. If you have the airship you can teleport straight there.

That leaves the other defender slot. To be honest I never found anyone that great for the slot at level 1, what I did was usually the Al Bhed team will throw away one of their defenders after not many matches, I always hire them because all the Al Bhed have good stats. Either way it's your least important slot.

Every time the prize you want to win doesn't pop up, reset stats. When you see it, go recruit your team. All these people start as "free" agents so nobody else will recruit them first.

If you're not doing the reset glitch, you will still want Tidus, Brother, Miyu and Ropp. Only Wedge falls off, I think his stats actually get worse as you level.

Start abusing Chronostasis if you haven't been; it'll give you a ton more time to get things done, at least in the Wildlands or Desert where monsters are pretty plentiful. And take the train to other areas if you haven't already. The game is pretty good about telling you what you need to do for each area's main quest.

His offensive stats get worse but he becomes a decent defender at around the 25-30 level. Of course, by that point you'll have Brother, Tidus and another decently levelled striker (one of the Psyches if you're lucky) so your defenders won't see much use anyway.

Jumal starts out better, but gets overtaken at level 10, and doesn't become better than Miyu again until around level 90 (and you should probably have Nimrook at that point).

Tidus/Miyu/Ropp is pretty much all you need on a Blitzball team. I'm only at Bevelle and I have all 3 on my team and we've 30-0 so far. Not that winning Blitzball is hard, but those guys shine exceedingly well. There was an issue early on when playing the Psyches, as their goalie has an 18 catch on level 1, but a sphere shot should beat him with Tidus.

Also, to everyone who got an FFX plat - how long did it take you to complete all the sphere grids? Do you need to fill all the empty nodes, or just activate all the nodes currently on the grid?

You need to fill in every empty node with something and then activate it. 68 hours using the in game clock but I used Zanmato. You can probably tack on another 5 hours grinding for luck spheres and then clearing them again if you don't use zanmato.

Say you were attempting to get the platinum trophy in Lightning Returns, you can get all but one trophy on your first play through with several days spare. It's absolutely harder to run out of time than it is to have too much time in that game.

If you're not interested in that, you have absolutely nothing to worry about and it makes me question the reviews who said the game's time limit was unforgiving because it's simply not.

Yeah, that poo poo's insane on consoles. But then tower 10 is super easy to cheese on the Vita version because of the game window you get by going to the home menu. Pauses the action for you so you can see and write down each button and then resume. Makes the Yuna towers a hell of a lot easier than Paine and Rikku towers.

He shouldn't have any problems finishing the main quests in time so there's no need to worry about it. However, I didn't finish every sidequest / chocolina task or beat the super-bosses on my first walkthrough, and I have no idea how you would without a guide. But that's OK, that just means I have some new stuff to do on NG+. I'd say the time-limit is pretty forgiving but you still have to keep the time in mind - it's nowhere near Shenmue levels of forgiving.
