I believe another thing is that when things are advertised and a current owner/patron/consumer/whatever sees it they feel more validated and compelled to keep on with it. I'm fairly sure I saw some article about either Coke or expensive cars or somesuch on this topic.

Plus PM owns or seeks to own most of the anti-smoking branding. They introduced plain "drab olive green" packaging in Australia as a disincentive to cigarette marketing based on brand/packet identity. I was working for a domain reg at the time and within 24 hours of policy announcement PM submitted applications for every conceivable domain with "olivegreen" or "plainpackaging".
