Keep a sharp eye out - even odds they toss in some John Wayne clips as 'documentary footage' the way they're going.

Also holy poo poo the whole FDR/New Deal revisionism thing that's been going on the past few years is horrifying.

I dunno how accurate it is 50 years down the line but wow, from a presentation standpoint this has aged insanely well. I have trouble watching documentaries from the 70s and 80s but this practically feels like it could have been made today (aside from like, being black and white).

also since this seems to come up a lot, look at this 20th century cavalry!

(I'm assuming it's staged? how much footage actually was taken in WW1?)

Surreal that it was 100 years ago this year that this all happened. I still have trouble shaking the notion from when I was little that lots of WW1 vets are still alive.

Were those actual, honest to god made-for-stabbing lances that those cavalrymen were using? The more I read about the first months of WWI, the more the clash of technology makes my head spin.

I do find it hilarious that in between talking about the East Prussian exodus in the face of the Russian Army and the Battle of Tannerburg, it shows a bunch of Russians dancing and playing music. I just like to imagine that someone at the BBC found footage of that, and by god he was going to put it somewhere in the documentary because it was too good not to be used.

Mostly #1, but when she says the war had no positive effects and was essentially meaningless, that's 100% 1939 talking, and we don't really think that any more.

You should still read it, she has a very good eye for human nature.

Edit: Also, since women weren't allowed in big libraries without a man to escort them at the time, that beautiful book is the fruit of research that she could fit around some chaperone's schedule.

Edit 2: Also she was like 25 or something. :arghfist::saddowns:

D-Day was the much-needed relief action that prevented the soviet union from completely collapsing under the relentless nazi onslaught. I don't think its very biased, but it is BBC made

e: having watched episode 14, I'd say they treated the Easter Rising as fairly as they could, the rebels are called extremists several times, but then you don't really expect the British establishment to understand why a group of people would want to be free of them.

I hadn't thought of the inevitible Rommel boner popping that will happen.

You guys ever seen that Ministry of War Propaganda poster of Churchill with his sleeves up followed by all the other men of Britain doing the same?

Well, take away the latter part of that image and you pretty much has distilled everything so far about Britain in WW2 according to that documentary.

I take it there was not a single mention of Dowding, Dunkirk, the fall of Hong Kong and Singapore or the early attempts at British Bombing of German Industry?

Also, I agree very much on the opinions so far over the BBC WW1 Documentary, I like the fact it is shot in black and white. Sort of makes you focus more on what is being said.
