I recommend either painkillers, or booze. Just avoid both until it gets into alien giga-hitler territory.

Seriously, this blatant revisionism of the 1930s and its ridiculous simplification of the US economy and the New Deal is insultingly blatant in its bias. DONT CUT MILITARY SPENDING EVER. THE NEW DEAL CAUSED HITLER Im so mad right now.

Keep a sharp eye out - even odds they toss in some John Wayne clips as 'documentary footage' the way they're going. Also holy poo poo the whole FDR/New Deal revisionism thing that's been going on the past few years is horrifying.

How'd you get a historian to sign off on this stuff?

Ofaloaf posted:It came out 50 years after the outbreak of WWI and did a lot of what Ken Burns did before Ken Burns could do it, except it also incorporated live interviews from WWI vets because those dudes were still around in decent numbers in 1964. I dunno how accurate it is 50 years down the line but wow, from a presentation standpoint this has aged insanely well. I have trouble watching documentaries from the 70s and 80s but this practically feels like it could have been made today (aside from like, being black and white). also since this seems to come up a lot, look at this 20th century cavalry! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tvLJbug_cg&t=560s (I'm assuming it's staged? how much footage actually was taken in WW1?) Surreal that it was 100 years ago this year that this all happened. I still have trouble shaking the notion from when I was little that lots of WW1 vets are still alive.

Koramei posted:also since this seems to come up a lot, look at this 20th century cavalry! Were those actual, honest to god made-for-stabbing lances that those cavalrymen were using? The more I read about the first months of WWI, the more the clash of technology makes my head spin. I do find it hilarious that in between talking about the East Prussian exodus in the face of the Russian Army and the Battle of Tannerburg, it shows a bunch of Russians dancing and playing music. I just like to imagine that someone at the BBC found footage of that, and by god he was going to put it somewhere in the documentary because it was too good not to be used.

I love books/movies about the western front like A Bridge Too Far, but reading Inferno was fun because it was super upfront about how the USSR accounted for 4.5ish million out of 5ish million German combat deaths.

I don't think its very biased, but it is BBC made e: having watched episode 14, I'd say they treated the Easter Rising as fairly as they could, the rebels are called extremists several times, but then you don't really expect the British establishment to understand why a group of people would want to be free of them. It's been a while since I've watched "World at War" but it seemed very dated, especially in stuff concerning Fall Weiss and Barbarossa. I imagine they didn't have any access/didn't care about sources from Eastern Europe or USSR..

You mean that time when the British were going to be pushed into the Suez canal but Patton landed with his unicorn Brigade out west and Rommel just turned around and ran at him screaming because he knew he was doomed? Well obviously, because the rest of the African campaign is just boring.

I hadn't thought of the inevitible Rommel boner popping that will happen. You guys ever seen that Ministry of War Propaganda poster of Churchill with his sleeves up followed by all the other men of Britain doing the same? Well, take away the latter part of that image and you pretty much has distilled everything so far about Britain in WW2 according to that documentary. I take it there was not a single mention of Dowding, Dunkirk, the fall of Hong Kong and Singapore or the early attempts at British Bombing of German Industry? Also, I agree very much on the opinions so far over the BBC WW1 Documentary, I like the fact it is shot in black and white. Sort of makes you focus more on what is being said.
