I dunno that nascar seems pretty boring, lots of cars driving around in a circle for 500 laps. At least with F1 they go really fast and have interesting tracks. And when they stack its a loving disaster.

Well, you're not supposed to use the head, but try telling that to a bunch of win obsessed idiots and see where it gets you. The thing that annoys me about football(as in soccer) is people faking injuries, I swear sometimes it looks roughly as "realistic" as pro wrestling.

American football is probably more dangerous on balance. Every role is crazy specialised so you've got 300lb+ linemen whose job is to be a human wall alongside wide receivers who are like Olympic sprinters that can catch. Obviously you'll see differences in positions of rugby players but it's nowhere near as pronounced and as a result their all-round fitness is usually better. Rugby's rules re tackling are also a lot stricter (no tackling in the air etc) which is where American football's padding is supposed to come in. Doesn't really work though hence all the brain damage cropping up in older players. It's a dumb and in many ways horrible sport but I'm fascinated and can't look away. Blame Friday Night Lights (book, although the film's pretty good too. Haven't watched the show).

US Footy by far, purely because of head to head contact. Rugby will break bones, joints, teeth and ears sure, but it's not surprising that the US is seeing problems relating to concussions in their professionals, they will have be playing full contact since they were very young, rattling that brain around in their skulls for a couple of decades. Having played left tackle and guard myself, almost every scrimmage involves a head to head hit, from an explosive start, it's very silly. AVeryLargeRadish posted:Well, you're not supposed to use the head, but try telling that to a bunch of win obsessed idiots and see where it gets you. Hard not to use the head when you're o or d line. Spearing is rightfully banned, but helmet to helmet contact is routine or at least it was when I played 17 or so years ago.

It's also much less common (and possibly even banned? Can't remember, it's been years since I played) for someone running full-tilt to be tackled front-on in rugby than in gridiron. This is massively dangerous to both parties, particularly as the padding allows you to hit much harder. It's the same basic problem as in boxing - extra padding prevents some injuries but makes others - possibly much more serious ones - much more common.
