Sima Yi (As portrayed in DW) strikes me as someone who would totally have a secret base on a Volcanic Island, with a private military that wear funny costumes. (He would be Cobra Commander is what I am saying) Speaking of Shu, I find how Jiang Wei joins Shu in DW8 to be completely hilarious. Zhuge Liang: Sorry for completely ruining your reputation and military career, but...we want you to join our club. Jiang Wei: gently caress YOU. Give me one good reason why I should go with you assholes? Liu Shan: BENEVOLENCE Jiang Wei: ...Eh, good enough for me. Lets roll.

Having played it just in Japanese, the word they use was not a word I knew to begin with anyway, so I went into it with no preconceptions and just figured out what it meant by the way they used it. edit: it's this.

It comes down to shoddy translation work, basically: repeating 'Confucius' over and over still doesn't have much depth, but it at least makes a little more sense than just saying BENEVOLENCE. At the very least, have them say words other than Benevolence. A land of tranquility, a land of altruism, a land of cooperation, whatever. It'd still be childish, but hearing the word 'benevolence' over and over is grating, and it's not like anyone comes to Dynasty Warriors for deep moral and political insights.

Shu as presented in DW8 pretty much don't do much of that Ren business either. So it doesn't really matter what they called it, it still doesn't apply to them.

It goes by pretty quick if you just set it to beginner and play material stages over and over. The rewards are worth it, since the academy/high level blacksmith/barracks allow you to buff up your dudes, weapons, and make it so you never have to worry about money again. It kind of breaks the game, honestly.

It's weird coming back to Dynasty Warriors after so many years, and so much Ravages of Time, but DW8XL on Steam did it. Any idea if they'll do the properly money-grubbing thing and release the non-Complete DLC on Steam?

I'd take down one or two slowly and they'd just mob a single one and juggle them while rapidly burning through their HP bar.

Lunethex posted:Can you explain why? I'm curious now, and I haven't played XL. XL adds three optional objectives to each stage in Free Mode, mostly completing stage objectives within a time limit. The basic goal of Escape from Jiangdong is to escort Liu Bei and Sun Shangxiang out of the castle and down to the escape point in the southwest. Sun Quan is in the southeast, but you don't need to fight him; in fact the game actively tells you to leave him alone. One of the optional objectives is too defeat Sun Quan within 8 minutes, which requires you to take a huge detour and to leave your two escort characters alone for a protracted period. It's even worse if you're trying to do one of the other optional objectives, since the ideal time to go beat the dogshit out of Sun Quan is right before Liu Bei and Sun Shangxiang get attacked by three or four playable officers.

So, I just beat the four historical kingdom stories in DW8XLCE. To avoid mucking everything up in terms of balance and such, am I better off going for the hypothetical routes, the Other stories, the...I guess XL stages are the lower sets in the stage select menus? Or am I now safe to jump into Lu Bu, then loop back through for hypotheticals and XL stuff? Does Lu Bu just level up everyone, or is it just that his story gets you a bunch of nice stuff, stuff that I already have comparable gear for and thus don't need to worry about it?

Lu Bu gets you level-4 weapons pretty quickly. Personally, I'd recommend polishing off the four kingdoms' hypothetical routes first, but it really doesn't matter. Do whatever you think you'll enjoy.

I got a fair number of L4 weapons on Lu Bu's final hypothetical even on normal. Then I swapped to hard mode to try and grind more out and the blacksmith was just selling them. edit: Also I can't overstate how... underwhelming Ambition mode is. I think it's because I basically need to time attack stages in a row and I hate that sort of poo poo. I wanna murder all the officers and stuff first.

You're on the right track given killing officers is worth 30 seconds and 100 kills is also worth 30 seconds. Abuse the 'Gather Supplies' bodyguard skill. It grants extra time based on KO count. 180 is worth about a minute and scales up from there. 'Summon Enemy' can be abused in combination with this or on it's own. The body guard heads for the nearest exit and vanishes. Roughly 10 seconds later, he comes back with 100+ enemies in tow. Not quite infinite time, but fairly close. You can maintain a real long time by this.

Set it to Beginner, put on a TV show or something, and get a character with a horse and do skirmish maps over and over. You can clear skirmish maps in less than 30 seconds easy. It's still 100 battles for the super (terrible) elephant but oh well. You can save between battles and turn off the game and it still counts as consecutive too, so there's that. I mean, I agree, it wasn't fun but far from the worst grind. For me, the worst grind is XL Ambition mode - I've subjugated 100% of the land and 'finished' the mode, but I still have to go back and play battles over and over to recollect all the playable officers, because the game only lets one playable officer enemy appear per subjugation battle.

Without halberd-switching, it would have been intolerable. I'm not saying it wasn't bad, I just found it less of an ordeal than you'd think thanks to some mitigating factors. With a lvl 150 character and a maxed-out custom weapon plowing through Beginner, even the late-chain damage sponges go down with two/three full Square combos (one if halberd-switching, but that required me to actually get off my horse so I didn't always do that). Granted, this means doing a fair bit of preparation and farming beforehand, but Academy-buying a hundred or so levels and fusing a twink weapon are worth it on their own. I also found that you can save before a battle and then Quit during that battle in order to take a break. This doesn't work if you Return to Camp, which autosaves and overwrites the post-battle save, but it's an option if you'd rather do something else for a bit. The whole thing took me about two hours spread out across multiple sittings, and I also had Netflix running and snacks when I actually was trudging through.
