I got to play around with my TIE Phantom in a 3 player asteroid-laden free-for-all yesterday.

Echo is really really really fun to fly. The cloak mechanic really works for me--it's a great way of implementing a "where the heck is this ship coming from" in a medium where everybody can see said fighter's position on the game board at the beginning of the turn.

Some observations:

1) Han Solo is the bane of my existence.
2) If you're gonna run Phantoms, never not run Echo/Whisper with VI and Advanced Cloak. Your pilot skill directly correlates to how long you survive, both in deciding whether to commit to your attack or to recloak based on ship positions, and in terms of getting your attack off first so you can recloak before you're fired upon.
3) Rolling five attack dice is fun as heck.
4) I'm not sure what else to put here but I like numbered lists.

This might be what I'll try running around with once I can get my hands on a second Phantom, strictly because I love the cloaking mechanism so much:

-"Whisper" + Veteran Instincts + Advanced Cloaking
-"Echo" + Advanced Cloaking
-Colonel Jendon + ST-321

I bet you they feel constrained by the EU "canon," which A) decided ages ago, despite the films never showing most of this, that some ships have fancy computers/can fly fast/whatever and others Do Not and B) has a funny way of focusing on the Rebels since they're the good guys and therefore provides a lot more material to borrow that favors them.

In my opinion, Rebel lists are more engaging to build and more varied than Imperial because they have oodles more upgrade icons and associated cards. Droids are exclusively Rebel and available on the ever-popular X-Wing; Bombs, exclusively Imperial*, have far fewer choices open to them than Droids, and can only be equipped on pricey Firesprays and specific-use Bombers; Turrets are exclusively Rebel; the Falcon can equip two Crew and the Firespray can't**; there are far more Rebel Only cards than Imperial Only; until this Wave the Imperials didn't have a B-Wing-style fighter with Systems/Cannon (still don't, really, due to cost); and really ultimately the fact that TIE Fighters and TIE Interceptors don't have ANY upgrade icons while every single Rebel ship has at least missiles is the best expression of the issue.

Rebel Aces throwing an extra medal space on A-Wings, when new medal releases were formerly something you could at least say equally favored both sides, and Crew on the B-Wing is exacerbating a problem that's been there since launch.

*just you watch - the foretold Y-Wing / TIE Advanced buff pack will give Bombs to Y-Wings, simultaneously not really helping them much and denying the Imperials their only unique upgrade type. And it'll give proton torps or some bullshit to the Advanced.

Imps are getting kinda screwed on the Huge Ships front too, as long as we're complaining about meta.

I'd like to see some kind of (card-only?) pack that lets you use your CR-90 as an Imperial CR-90.

Considering it doesn't seem like the huge ships are really going to see tournament play, nothing is really stopping you.

The real issue is scale. The other iconic huge ships are what, Star Destroyers, Mon Calamari Cruisers, and Nebulon B Frigates? All of which would blow the scale to kingdom come.

I feel like you're ignoring some stuff here. The two sides definitely have different playstyles, which is the most obvious with Howlrunner being only Imperial and having the best ability in the game. Imperials by and large have much better Pilot Skill ratings and have greater access to Elite Pilot talents. The Lambda Shuttle can take two crew. Imperials actually have access to two large ships, hopefully remedied in Wave 5 by a YT-2400.

Your argument about cost is interesting since many Rebel ships have been considered over cost for awhile. The Phantom can take the Systems Upgrade at 25 points for PS3 (and 4 attack dice. and cloak) and the E-Wing at PS1 can take a System Upgrade at 27, or a B-Wing can at PS2 for 22 points. I'm not sure how the cost makes the Phantom just not count as something that can take the upgrade.

Huge ships are a separate game really and it doesn't matter to me if they make Imperial ones or not. Frankly I hope they don't make any more, the cost is too much.

Oh it's not about playstyles. Imperials being inclined towards swarm builds is not here or there to the point of upgrade card availability. Nor am I calling Imperial weak. The issue is they have fewer choices, which makes them less fun to theorycraft and in turn leads to a smaller array of viable builds. Fewer choices also invariably leads to lower power as options are released and combos are discovered, but I am not presently arguing that the game balance has actually suffered for it to date.

I was actually thinking of TIE Defender as the expensive Systems choice, kind of forgot Phantoms get Systems and not Defenders. My bad. That's a result of me personally choosing not to purchase or pay overmuch attention to EU ships. I suppose it's still true that B-Wings give Rebels easier access to heavy guns than Imperials can get.

Point is that Rebels have a shitload more options cards than Imperials, and while that may not yet cause an imbalance in the Force, it does make Rebel squads more exciting.

Also, unrelated, but I still think the Systems icon is a massive pile of nonsense thematically. I don't really get why all Systems cards are not merely Modifications - Targeting Computer and Stealth Device anybody can install, but only some ships can install Sensor Jammers and Fire Control because :iiam:

Local Imdaar Alpha event at my LGS........ 4-0... no wait, 0-4.. :v:

Got utterly pasted, between 4 games I managed to take down two interceptors and a B-wing and I was taking chunks out of Han Solo before my final ship got wiped out in my final game (with a meagre 3 hull points left). I think it's fair to say that yes, the TIE Advanced is a bit poo, I'd be better served spending those points elsewhere.. and I should probably think things through a bit more, try to not to fly into bloody asteroids so much too.

Played against a horrible 3 x B-wing, 1 x X-wing list, basically 3 B-wings with a mash up of advanced sensors(?) and targeting computers, whatever that one is that dishes out target locks any time you attack something. Oh and naturally the X-wing was Biggs and was near always in range to make a difference :(

Any tips on a 100-point Imperial list to get a newish player into the game? I've been running Chewie and Biggs for my Rebels, but they haven't been fair against a sorta halfhearted Vader list. I'd like to put together something more fun and competitive for the Imps.

I've got 2 starters, 1 of every expansion, and doubled up on Slave I's. I'd like to fit in an Interceptor and either a Slave I or the Shuttle, but whatever's going to be fun and balanced.

Double Firespray is pretty nasty, but not necessarily all that dynamic to play.

I just put this together- have yet to try it out.

quote:

Captain Jonus w/ 2x Flechettes, Swarm Tactics- 28
Bounty Hunter w/ HLC, Gunner- 45
Omicron Group Pilot w/ Ion Cannon, Vader- 27

Something like this might also be fun and gets in a TIE-I, Firespray and Shuttle

quote:

Soontir Fel w/ Push the Limit
Krasis Trelix w/ Ion Cannon, Rebel Captive
Omicron w/ Vader

Maybe not incredibly competitive, but not a pushover.

What a surprise, the B-Wing gets a crew slot. As if it wasn't a n amazing ship before. Kyle Katarn looks alright but Jam Ors would be okay for ships with 1 agility. Perhaps the only saving grace is that Defenders might be good against B-Wings.

I've been almost exclusively using this list since I first got into the game. It'll be interesting to see how Blount affects the meta. I'm interested in potentially messing around with builds that will typically take him down before he shoots, but this becomes quite difficult if he takes Vet Instincts or defensive upgrades. On the other hand, the Z-95 seems quite weak overall, so the more points you pile on the less effective it is once the missile goes off.

For someone wanting to get into the game after just buying the core set, is there a fairly cheap way to become competitive? Don't want to spend much more than another $50-60 on actual retail packs, but am happy to buy a few cards separately from the guys on ebay selling individual cards.

That's enough money if you already know what kind of list you want. Most ships are ~33% off retail on amazon. The problem is getting advanced sensor, gunner, or push the limits cuz those might involve buying ships that are of the opposite faction. This looks ideal, thanks! Variety without any dead weight is what I'm going for here. The Vader was just too many points and got chewed up (heh) by my Falcon super quick. This should make for a more interesting match, and I might switch my pilots so they're not the min-max best, while maintaining the ships I like to fly.

If you were Pushing the Limit then it becomes essentially a free focus action. While probably not as intuitive it probably will work really well, allowing B-Wings to do a Barrel roll, TL and get a free focus after executing a green manuever.

It should essentially turn one B-Wing into a hyper-mobile death machine. It won't pair well with Keyan Farlander but it looks like it was designed for Ibtisam, who can use the PtL stress to get a reroll and the execute a green for a focus. Add in PtL again and you get the idea.

e:Ibtisam with B-Wing/E, PtL and Kyle Katarn is 35 points, same as Colonel Vessery.

But that's really the trick, it's surprising maneuverable at lower speeds and still can benefit from rerolls and such. You could, if you wanted, go 4 forward opening and then next turn green maneuver and get the bonus focus. It's an unusual combination but I think it can work.
