Hammer Floyd posted:Exciting news. I've booked in studio time on Sunday to go and make the ultimate Metal guitar and bass tone possible! It'll be fast, heavy, loud and for a guitar nerd like me, ridiculously good fun. For bass tone, it's not metal, but punk. Take a listen to 88 Fingers Louie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=croeljPMpMQ For guitar and bass tone, you can't beat the Bjoler brothers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kF3clTWMx8o Youtube rips don't do any of those songs justice, so I highly recommend finding those albums and support those two great bands, even if they're disbanded or the appropriate players aren't in the bands anymore. I think guitar and bass tones really rely on what kind of genre/sound you're looking for. A super crunch or super fuzz guitar will sound awesome in some styles but stink in others. A twangy bass sound works for some styles where a deep tone works for others. Mileage may vary.

Cheers for the suggestions all! If nothing else, I found a couple of good bands that I'd missed out on. In other news: Rob Dukes was fired from Exodus and replaced with Zetro again. I actually preferred Rob to Zetro, so I'm not thrilled, but you don't exactly listen to Exodus for the vocals...

Exodus also haven't done anything worthwhile since the 1980s so it really only matters if you want to see them live. In that case, I'd much rather have Zetro based on the videos I've seen of Dukes.

Admittedly, it's one of those situations where if you took one half of one album and added it to one half of the other album, you'd have something loving awesome, but I thought they both had some fantastic riffs on it. I saw 'em in a club a few years ago. Rob was great at getting everybody into it. I don't think there was anybody who saw 'em that night that didn't feel involved in the gig.

Any suggestions for bands that are like halfway between Black Sabbath and Sleep? Slow, chuggy, groovy riffs, preferably no vocals. Kinda like Bongripper or The Sword - like stoner metal but with actual riffs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsDz5qphC3c https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEsmxJvgcjU edit: basically I want stuff exactly like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-FjO3E8K-E fuf fucked around with this message at 16:56 on Jun 10, 2014 |

Y'all posted some good bands with good guitar tones, but not my favorite. It used to be Opeth if that tells you anything, with those long clear sustains and poo poo, but these days I can't get over how crisp Keep of Kalessin's guitars are: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLIUiuGn8fc Youtube won't really do it justice but man I just dig that sound. Unfortunately they lost their awesome singer, so I'm not sure what to expect from their next album Fenrir fucked around with this message at 01:09 on Jun 11, 2014 |

I don't know how but for some reason saccage's album from 2012 has some of the best all around tones for everything. http://saccage.bandcamp.com/album/death-crust-satanique-full-length But somehow, Vorace sounds nowhere near as good.

I've never really studied their live footage but I remember reading an interview with Tagtgren around the time Into the Abyss came out where he claimed not to use any pedals. Like, at all. No distortion or anything. I think he said for studio stuff any "effects" were handled after the fact. But for live settings it was just "plug in and go."

Seems an opportune time to ask, I'm not that into Enslaved, but not sure what album I should get next. I have Frost which doesn't do much for me, I prefer other Black Metal from this time. I have Below the Lights which is pretty great, although Ridicule Swarm just bores the pants off me. I have RIITIIR which is similar, but somehow not as satisfying as Below the Lights, except for Veilburner and it's kick arse grove. So where should I go from Below the Lights? Back an album or two, or forwards?

Measly Twerp posted:Seems an opportune time to ask, I'm not that into Enslaved, but not sure what album I should get next. Get Mardraum. That seems like the medium of all you've described. If you like that, get Isa. I'd have thrown BTL out there but you already have that one and you liked it, so I don't know what else to recommend. E: Actually now that I think of it, if you like Mardraum the next one after that I'd recommend is Axioma Ethica Odini. It's a LOT heavier than RIITIIR and has a lot of callback to the Below the Lights era. If you really get into that try Ruun, Isa and Vertebrae, but those 3 aren't as immediately accessible. E2: In fact, just get Axioma Ethica Odini, because god drat. But get Mardraum too. I think they'd both be up your alley. Ok gonna shut up because I'm gonna just end up gushing for six loving hours, this is my favorite band by a country goddamn mile and I could talk about them until my voice gave out. It's a total wankfest, but the melodic style and the way the songs are written is really intriguing and unusual. Feels alien in a way very little metal does. Also I wonder if they're still active. There was a rumor of a new album a while ago but it never materialized.
