You can find Japanese-made symmetrical SG clones branded Edwards, Tokai, Greco, Burny, Orville, and Epiphone Japan. They vary in price according to when they were made and how fancy they are, but almost all of them are well-built and highly accurate copies of the original. Prices have calmed down a bit recently too, so if you can find one locally and thereby avoid shipping from Japan you can do quite well.

Those would be "more" symmetric compared to an ESP but not symmetrical as the original SG is not symmetrical. I second the advice on that Gretsch. It's a nice guitar, nice single coils in them. You can always get yourself an Epiphone Dot, Sheraton, or Lucille.

Right, of course. I meant to say they look like a typical SG; a shape I guess I don't know that well although I have been eyeballing them more lately. Anyone have one of those 70s tribute ones? Are they any good at all? That Gretsch is very cool. Love that green finish. I also really like the Ibanez Artcore series. If you like the Schecter Corsair you'll probably like the AS73, AS93, and many siblings since they're exactly the same shape. The new Expressionist series includes some really interesting designs. They've also rebooted the old Artstar name, which originally belonged to a short-lived Korean line. There was a very accurate 335 in that series actually-except for the "castle" headstock. I've never played a Korean Artstar, but I suspect they're pretty good. The Japanese AS100 I played at Drum City in Colorado was one of the nicest 335-types I've ever laid hands on.

GF use to (until very, very recently I think) have a Xaviere guitar and the body was practically an exact replica of the SG body. I was surprised they were able to get away with it, but I am sure it only lasted as long as it did because they are so small time, that Gibson never noticed.

Hey, thanks for all the info folks. So I played an Epiphone ES-339 Ultra today at my local shop. It was $799.00. I think I am going to pull the trigger on it. It seriously sounded awesome, and played just right. It's kind of trippy looking too, with it's shrunk down body size. Looking online though I see some used ones on Musicians friend in pelham blue: I really like how that looks. The debate now is if I want to save some money and get one that might not play and sound as nice as the cherry colored one I played today. Hard decision I guess. My life is so hard

I think the logic is that it is corny today to buy guitar with some dude's signature all over it. They have been more modest about the CHRIS CORNELL SIGNATURE because there are a bunch of wierdos who are mad whenever someone who isn't a virtuoso is attached to a Signature model, like it means something. It was made in very few quantities (I think 250 of each color). That and with the 335/339 in style big time = expensive. The budget one is the "Studio." 40 OZ fucked around with this message at 22:53 on Jun 19, 2014 |

Then there's the original signature guitar, the Gretsch Chet Atkins Country Gentleman. I agree with you, I might have miscommunicated there. There are a ton of awesome signature models. I have one myself. I'm saying, that you'll see 99% of the time when an artist is marketing it today, they'll say "I didn't want this to be about me, I wanted this to be a cool guitar that somebody would buy because it is cool on it's own, I just designed it, etc." As opposed to: or: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNpS23xTyCM Which is more memorabilia-y. I have a signature model guitar and I've never listened to that artist's music. Also, there are lots of configurations you can only get on signature models- hardtail strat, aforementioned gretschy cornell 335, etc. You mentioned Chet Atkins, he had a signature 335 too for a minute. 40 OZ fucked around with this message at 02:19 on Jun 20, 2014 |

So I'm sort of half looking around for a Tele, given that I don't have one and I'd like to have something with a new sound; and I found something I really liked on Wikipedia of all places. Does anyone know if the Acoustasonic Tele as neat as it looks, and is it worth tracking one down?

The local shop has a used one (which is weird, didn't it come out THIS YEAR?) for $300, but I didn't have either of my guitars when I popped down there. My amp is a Fender so I don't know exactly how much the sound will differ from the SCX2 without trying it (demos seem decent) but at that price it's worth a serious look for a second one that could be fun.

Not exactly impulse purchase territory for either but they're fun.

Declan MacManus posted:I tried one and I hated how it sounded when it broke up but I tend to like smoother distortion than what they're going for with it I play at the edge of breakup such that it gets fairly "overdriven" when played dynamically. I bet this is why finding a good overdrive pedal is difficult for me, because they only drive the amp further into breakup and I don't really want that. I want it louder and for it to sound different, but no more overdrive. I think the best analogy is to say that I want it to be like the difference between the amp on "Lo" and the amp on "Hi" -- definitely louder, fuller, actually maybe a little less breakup. I don't know how to do this. Maybe an EQ pedal that's pushed louder, but also has some frequencies attenuated? Use tube-y a preamp pedal to choke the guitar but provide a pleasing breakup, so that then turning it [b]off[/i] actually makes the guitar louder, with different breakup characteristics? Kind of a weird one imo

So I have my new Blues Jr V2 and it sounds great! However, it has got a hiss or quiet buzz that is independent of volume/master-volume (unless they`re zeroed out) - it`s not really loud but it`s audible. Is this right, or is something broken?

I just want to say that the best SG-alike, in terms of looks at least, for me has to be the Reverend Sensei which I want one I want one I want one. Not exactly an SG but you can see the design in it. Signature guitars are kinda cool. I've never really seen one I'd want to pay mucho dinero for over just sourcing the pickups and putting in a standard model. I get that a lot of artists try and make the ultimate versatile guitar, but to me a signature guitar should offer some weird combination that you can't really get without a pain.

Make sure the tubes are properly seated. While the amp is on, touch the tip of the preamp tubes and gently move them around a bit. There shouldn't be any noise when you do this. If so, turn the amp off, let the tubes cool down and take out the one that was making noise. Using a needle or tiny screw driver, tighten the sockets the pins plug into and check for corrosion. I had a loose connection and was getting hisses and pops until I fixed one of the tube sockets.

I have a Vox AC4TV mini (boxy and shrill sounding, even through an extension cab) and a Roland Cube 60 (powers on but doesn't make sound) so I'm kind of in dire straits here. A lot of readily available sets leave the low B at about .060 for thickness (had GHS Boomers, and some other set for the couple months I tried a 7string). When dropped down to a low A, it was floppy as all hell.
