At least EA UFC has these awesomely terrible video messages. Rory seems like some lost kid on meds being forced to read a cue card against his will. And Chuck Liddell's is so garbled it makes me uncomfortable.

Pfft, I'm Scandinavian. The UFC has no clue about our occasionally awful decision-making skills.

I somehow made it to brown belt in the online mode (thanks, Frankie Edgar, for making it really easy to swarm anyone who throws high kicks!), but I still have zero concept of the ground game. After I take my opponent down with typical bread-and-butter MMA move, the Japanese back drop bomb, all I'm capable of accomplishing is holding them down until the referee stands us up. I can maybe throw one or two shots at them, but then they usually manage to get out of side control. I've managed to snag one kimura from there, but 9 out of 10 times, I get nothing done after hitting the ground. And on the rare occasion where I make it to north/south or mount, I don't feel like I've done the quarter circle transition any differently than the other times I've tried. Can any of you tell me exactly where the quarter circle movement is supposed to be initiated from side control? It doesn't seem to be 9 to 12 or 3 to 6 like most of the other ones.

So it wasn't just the stream I was watching. I love that animation too, the guy who eats it looks temporarily disappointed in himself rather than hurt, then a second later he's like "oh right we're fighting". It reminds me of a recent fight on TUF where a guy got lifted and dropped on his rear end (literal version) and must've lost his breath or something because he looked confused and terrified and spent the rest of the fight getting wrestled.

I think it's more that side control seems to be really easy to initiate a stand-up from for the other party.

I did have a great fun match with a pubbie who was loving SEETHING after I beat him 30-27, despite him ending the final round having followed me to the ground after a right hook. Turns out a million suplexes beats one knockdown.

Match two is a war with a late finish, probably the best match to watch.

Biggest gripe i have with the ground game is the lack of punishment for spamming the get up button. I just lock people down from getting up, but if they spam the button you can only get in one punch even if their stamina is low and yours is high.

I have a bunch of wins by sub online and what has gotten me most of those wins is just picking a direction to block their escape and sticking with it. Give two seconds to start going in one direction, and then block that direction completely as they try to fake you out by going in another direction for half a second. Repeat until Anderson Silva taps to Gegard Mousasi

leidend posted:

Nope I don't believe so. You have to win TUF I believe, they make you retry your matches until you win, but once you win the finale (like the 4th fight in I think?) then you start your UFC career as 0-0. From there you can win or lose and it doesn't matter, you only get "kicked out" after you take a certain amount of damage.

Heads up though in my experience the career mode practically forces you to lose at a few key moments. The first is when you fight for the belt the first time. It seems common that the first time you fight the champion you'll get KO'd in ~10 seconds unless you play perfectly. Every strike the CPU throws will wobble you, it's so stupid. Then when you rematch the champion later you'll notice it being far more balanced and similar the other fights you won. Then it's easy and you win the belt. The 2nd time the game sort of forces you to lose is after you've held the belt for like 15 defenses you'll notice some contender start beating your rear end, similar to how it was when you fought the champion for the first time, and if you choose to just let him win your Total Damage will nearly double. That's how the game forces you to retire so you don't go on a 50 fight winning streak, aka the game not having any real ending.

tl;dr: Losing is part of the career mode. I finished mine at like 35-2-0, and the 2 losses were such bullshit I just decided to let the game have them since preventing them would have taken so much effort for a game that isn't worth it.

I don't understand why they didn't do the career mode like Fight Night Champion does it. In that game you have to fight TONS of low level guys, each with a different look, fighting style, height etc. to build up your skills and rank before you can even touch the big name fighters. The game just had a huge roster in career mode. You'd start out at rank 50, and it wasn't until you approached the top ten ranks or so that named fighters like Manny Pacquiao would be available to fight. It looked like it took a lot of work to do (maybe that's the reason?), but it would have been time well spent for this game.

You start pretty low in the ranks in UFC too so I don't have a huge issue with that, but Fight Night had a way better sense of progression because so many of your first fights took place in those rinky dink gyms and venues before you get the MSG arenas and such. The TUF angle works at the start, which is why I initially liked career mode, but then you're quickly thrown into the UFC show and from there it's all a blur. I did notice that during your prelim fights the arena is mostly empty, that's a great detail, but because Rogan & Goldberg are yelling their heads off like you just won a championship after beating the 37th ranked guy in the world, it diminishes career mode quickly. There was almost no difference between the first guy I knocked out in UFC and the last fight. Even the same cheesy videos get played over and over.

The easy fix for that is to bring back the regional podunk/amateur fights before you even get to TUF, TUF should be in the middle. It should be like 4 amateur bouts, 4 tiny promotion shows, 4 fights on TUF, 4 fights on UFC prelims, 4 PPV fights, and then finally a title fight. That would have required depth though and EA wasn't putting any of that poo poo into this game.

Yeah but it makes a career mode game pretty boring because once you win the title and do a few defenses there's nothing worthwhile happening for the rest of the game.

In UFC 3 you start out in the WFA and have to work your way up, if you take consecutive losses you will get cut from the UFC. Also if you have enough wins in your division you can get called up to a Pride tournament.

Likewise, in Fight Night there is a long progression before you're fighting roster characters, and usually your first title fight is really hard but not impossible to win. In my 15th fight I was fighting for a belt against Arturo Gatti and it was loving hard and I got knocked down about 3 times in the fight, but I ended up winning a split decision and it felt really good.

Well, considering the low number of actual fighters in the game it's necessary.

The game needs weight class changes badly, and the ability to fight guys in different divisions in exhibition since I can do it online.

A little better in striking due to the parry system, considerably better with submissions, hit and miss on the ground due to the lack of reversals, a little worse on fighters fighting like they should, much much much much (x1000) better online, much worse on career/offline game modes in general.

Overall I'm not going back to Undisputed, ever, after having played it up until about two weeks ago, so that should probably be your answer.

You should be able to escape to half guard if you hold L1 and do a transition. Stupidly you can stand up from full mount (which you shouldn't be able to do) but you can't stand up from back mount (which you probably also shouldn't be able to do but should be able to do more than from mount.) I think from back mount you can also L1 escape to half guard.
