Gather round, one and all, and thrill to my turgid tales of underwhelming misadventure!
I went and checked out the CoTA motorcycle track day that was held last weekend since I'll be riding there in September. I saw a cool thing while wandering through the paddocks.

I think Falken has one of the best modern liveries. (Martini and JSP are still my favorites, though.)

Shipping your grand touring Ferrari from Florida to Boston instead of driving it is terrible car stuff.

Unfortunately no picture as I was driving myself at the time, but two days ago when I was driving back home from work I had the pleasure of being passed by and for a while following a yellow Boss 302 Mustang. Keeping in mind this is Belgium so I wasn't really expecting to see one of those around. Looked and sounded pretty great.

On the other hand on my way to and from work I've come across a Ferrari 458, a Tesla, various Lotus Exiges and a bunch of Maseratis, as well as quite a few classic cars in pretty great condition. Not just once but numerous times so the owners must be either living nearby or take the same roads I do.

You can run a Subaru transmission too but I think you have to do some internal conversions (to knock out the transfer case/centre diff, as well as reverse the gears).

There's a guy here who added an EJ25 turbo to his Vanagon Syncro. He had to do surprisingly little fab until it came to the exhaust. He used an aftermarket bellhousing and input shaft splined for a Subaru clutch instead of an adapter plate, and mated the whole mess to a massively overbuilt VW trans.

That guy has a MASSIVE overinflated sense of what powdercoat can and cant do...

Sanding off zinc coating to replace it with powder coat because its tougher? I've got powdercoated gear on my car thats had a single rock chip and its now flaking powder coat off like mad because surface rust got in below it

Not to mention that it cuts through three large cities that can get terrible traffic jams. I'd recommend taking I-81 and I-78 through Harrisburg, PA to bypass D.C. and Baltimore (with the added bonus that the speed limit on I-81 through much of Virginia and West Virginia is 70 MPH) and taking the Tappan Zee Bridge across the Hudson to avoid NYC.

The van is surprisingly small for the price and you never really see pictures of it compared to other things so the size comes as a bit of a surprise.
It's still pretty great though. The amount of detail on it is great down to the 8-track tape and the faucets in the tiny little kitchen.

The van is a lot better than the bug they did a few years prior.. the bug is enormous, fragile, and doesn't look all that good.

My favorite detail on the van is the engine.. they did a super job nailing the character of it.

It's a fun trick but changing the belt is already such a simple maintenance task I'm not sure why anyone would risk their fingers to do it faster.

Especially because you really need all ten digits to adjust the valves. :v:

I really want the van, but I guess they stopped making the kit since I can't find it in stores. The Unimog appears to have suffered the same fate. eBay prices are steep too, blech.

It is out of production, but it's still readily available. I've seen it at my local lego store every time I visit. Big chains tend not to hang on to the top tier sets because they don't move very fast.

Amazon has a bunch available.

The mini bus was a promotional item last year.

No, it's loving stupid. They spent 100 hours prepping a car so it can be motor swapped in 42 seconds.

Time it from engine-off to engine-start (cranking doesn't count) and drive it to the next town to prove you did it right.

Yeah that video looks more than a little bullshit.

Quick swaps are certainly possible, if not necessarily cost- or manpower-effective. My dad and his buddies used to all drive Corvairs back in the day, they practiced and got to where they could have a car driven fresh off the street, have the engine and transaxle completely out, and bolted back in and driving away in under fifteen minutes.

This was back in the day when the royal marines did stunts like this in order to come across like some kind of masters of everything as opposed to a fighting force trained to just murder people in the most efficient manner possible.

Collateral Damage
Jun 13, 2009

Didn't they do some stunt where they completely disassembled a car (land rover maybe?) in short time as well? Of course it was prepped too, with only a few bolts left holding the body to the frame and so on.

edit: Found it, it was canadian army engineers disassembling and reassembling a jeep in 4 minutes. Still obviously prepped.
