Ugh this thread.

So I got in iGear Starburst yesterday (F22 Raptor Generations Starscream)

I've had a bad track record with IGear stuff. My Medical Specialist and Faith Leader both broke and their not-Gears figure kind of sucked.

This figure, however, is amazing. Technically. The jet mode is perfect. The transformation is simple and intuitive, and the robot mode is gorgeous (the head is a bit weird but fine). It only suffers from some spotty qc - the left thigh is a bit loose resulting in minor floppy leg, and the red chest piece doesn't fully tab in properly. If those two minor points were addressed I'd wholeheartedly recommend this figure.

However given that my Takara Starscream has a qc flaw with one of its launchers, I figure maybe I just got a bum copy. Compared to every other Generations Seeker out there though this thing kicks rear end. It looks great compared to Hegemon and Orion and finally gives you that sense from the IDW comics that Seekers are badass and big trouble. I've got the other two on the way, and I'm debating on getting the Coneheads.

Honestly I never had a problem with the proportions. The hands are a bit skinny but don't look off when you have it in hand, especially since the forearms have a bit of jet mode panelling to bulk them up a bit. The null rays also help. Otherwise the robot mode is absolutely gorgeous. I just wish the face was less concave, as it gives it a bit of an Animated vibe, but not to a deal breaking level.

Bay loves the Coen Bros.

John Turturro, Steve Buscemi, John Goodman, Frances McDormand, etc. They all show up. It's not just the casting; The Island references Blood Simple's iconic knife scene, and Pain & Gain is constantly compared to Fargo.

I used to have faith in FP but Mindwipe (and their enornous goddam delays-- how long has it been since they showed those sketches of their Skullcruncher?) really left me cold. Swamper might be in my future.

I'd buy KFC Cyclonus for like $20 at Target, not $75 or whatever.

There's one other TF property we've had some fairly thorough discussions of, and that's Beast Machines. It's unfortunate that terrible TF fiction tends to be more ripe for analysis. As great as BW/MTMTE are, they are pretty surface-level and there's not much to really dig into. The only exception I can think of is the early arcs of RID, and what it has to say about nation-building and the struggle between democracy and safety. But it doesn't take much heavy lifting to understand that "bombs in the bad guys heads" is the TF equivalent of "drone strikes".

Beast Machines is interesting to consider on the grand timeline of Transformers because while it does try to do a lot of fresh things with the canon and concepts underlying the franchise, it also commits the unforgivable sin of being unbelievably dull. The Bay movies, for all their numerous faults, are obnoxiously loud and overstimulating, which at least lends itself to being noticed (for good or ill), but BM was just flatly mediocre in the grand scheme of things.

Which is a shame, really, because exploring the divide between the forward march of technology contrasted with the need to remain cognizant of one's biological heritage is fertile ground for fiction, but most transhumanist authors end up falling into the same traditional "oh we need both to move forward" escape clause and we're left with the Mass Effect 3 "everyone's a cyborg now" green ending.

I absolutely agree. It also tried to have....?something?....to say about ecology, but didn't get much further than "plants are cool, kids". It would've been really interesting if it turned out that they did need to cast off the biological to truly progress as a species. They'd have to accept that Megatron was at least partially correct, they were in the wrong, there's nothing inherently advantageous about organic life, their god was incorrect, etc.

Also, in spite of the great help I got from this thread, I cannot figure out my issue with AOE Hound. I'm posting pictures of what I'm looking at, sorry for wasting everyone's time with my dumbness but this is driving me nuts:

When the head is inserted this way, the grill is aligned properly, but the head-plate flops out when it's placed on a table wheels-down.

When it's jammed in there this way, the grill is aligned improperly, and it's pretty clear that what's holding it in is the friction of the rubber head on the plastic walls of the cavity, but at least it doesn't flop out.

If there is a third way to do it, I just can't figure it out...

As for your Beast Machines point it would be interesting if there was at least another viewpoint established. Or any viewpoints. I don't really remember any part of BMs explaining why Organics were good, bad, to be avoided, had been evolved past and needed to be re-adapted. It just came off as hippie dredge instead of an actual viewpoint. I swear Optimus was just like "Transformers is used to be organic!!!" and then "We must bring balance back to the force!"

But then BMs is super boring and I don't want to re-watch it so maybe I'm remembering wrong.

No, you're not wrong. This was a side effect of the basic premise of the show having been a rejected pitch for an eco-conscious show that Skir hammered the Beast Wars characters into, come hell or high water. The result was a lot of out of character behavior, including Megatron's sudden hatred for organic life, which had never been even hinted at before. As a stand-alone TF show it probably wouldn't have been nearly as reviled as it was, but you can't mess with established characters like that and not hit some serious backlash. Which is not even getting into the whole "G1 continuity ends with Cybertron becoming organic" firestorm.

Terry van Feleday

Free Your Mind
It's a real shame that there isn't more thematically sound TF fiction, because the very basic image of a robot changing into a car is so innately charged and powerful that just looking at any given toy could give you plenty to work with, and I don't think a lot of writers, even good ones, entirely realise this. (A symptom of this is how you'll usually see Cybertronians hang out in robot mode 90% of the time in fiction, only transforming when the alt mode is required for some utilitarian purpose, treating it like an object of convenience, the way we would, rather than an innate part of their own being.)

Like I'll admit I know nothing about Beast Machines, but something about what you're saying already kind of rubs me the wrong way - I understand wanting to make a point about conserving your heritage or whatever, but why would you illustrate it using a species that is inherently fluid and transitive? I mean that dissonance between their nature and the proposed moral stance could be pretty interesting, but then the whole angle of nature vs. technology becomes completely redundant and superfluous. A robot turning into a tank isn't that different from a robot turning into an ape when you get down to it, so why is that your central antagonist rather than, say, something that doesn't transform at all? Like, just a tank with no robot mode, trapped in an endless search for external, appropriated upgrades to surpass its organic counterparts with, frantic in its ambition yet static in its form. I dunno, guess that would be pretty weird.*

I think the real problem is just that 30 years later, we've barely taken any steps to shed the whole dumb and primitive "good Autobots protect earth from evil Decepticons" thing. Binary good vs. evil existing order vs. encroaching Other stories have that amazing capacity to just strangle every drop of nuance from a premise, and yet we keep returning to them because people believe that's what Transformers "is". Isn't it odd how a series fundamentally about change is so opposed to it?

*Animated actually came pretty close to doing something pretty cool with Megatron's immobile severed head, but of course they ditched that whole concept a season in so they could have him ineffectually lounge around on his evil throne instead.

Well, we take steps, but for some reason we keep getting shoved back in the hole. Beast Wars won Emmys and was the second-highest-selling toy line of its day, but it's considered fairly niche (within the small niche of TF fandom) today, and TF TV is back to the G1 formula. I doubt that RID and MTMTE are as critically acclaimed or giant cash cows so the parallel isn't super-strong, but they both used to be pretty strong books before the wheel turned again and RID took a turn back to the established "good Autobots protect earth from evil Decepticons" formula. I would say it's cyclical, but it seems more like trying to escape from quicksand.

I could've gotten over the way that the characters got messed with if it was in service of a good product. Preferably something actually subversive. The strongest message that the show put forward is that old South Park lambasting cliche, "the answer is somewhere in the middle guys".
