Okay, on the balance of it I'm gonna say thanks for saving me from getting into a bad situation. I'll go somewhere else and look at China again in a couple years.

Take the time to become a certified teacher where you currently are, if that's an option for you financially. Then you can try for international schools, which are the king jobs.

So long, and thanks for all the fish gallbladdΣrs!

Turns out the Shanghai job has been filled, sorry. It was only a summer position anyway, but it would have given you a taste of the country.

RE: Hong Kong and experience
You'd have to get an employer to sponsor your visa. This is very rare, because although there aren't experience limits and stuff written in law in HK, the employer does have to prove that your job couldn't be filled by a local*. Since there are lots of native English teachers floating about HK with the right to work here (who count as locals), that's actually not as easy as it sounds to pull off. So your experience might be an issue. What was your BA in?

Do you hold dual nationality? (I'm assuming you're American)
Some countries qualify for Working Holiday visas in HK, which again is a short-term thing but would get you started. Plus if you do a good job it's easier for a company to sponsor your visa because a) they already like you, and b) they can easily claim that you have insider knowledge that makes you more valuable to them than a random local.

*This is how International Schools make sure that they can bring people across. Because you're inherently more familiar with the US curriculum than a local here would be.

I know plenty of people who have come over in 2014, have residence permits as ESL teachers, and do not have those requirements. I'm not gonna say it's totally legal and there's nothing shady about it, but I will say "not totally legal" and "sorta shady" are par for the course in China. I am in Chengdu, for reference.

That said I think you're making the smarter decision in not coming.

For non-teaching it's the same deal, but with 5 years instead of 2. I guess teaching has lower requirements since China knows the ESL market would implode if they imposed anything stricter as they'd have to start offering competitive wages and good benefits packages as a side effect of having to hire qualified instructors and keep them on for longer than the average 1 year turnaround time.

People do get deported for it, at least for non-Z visas in Beijing. My previous employer has been having it happen a couple times a year since 2011.

It's a slow thread, so don't worry about posting your job details. Someone here tried asking a job for 11 rmb an hour, someone tried sueing their employer. So yeah, don't be shy.

And if you can, teach at an international school or consider the Hong Kong NET program.

For other stupid stuff you should chill out with us in the LAN thread

Fun fact, the oldest reference I have found to the worthless status of English language teachers in China comes from an Imperial Edict related to the operation of the Tongwenguan - the forerunner to Peking University - in the latter half of the C19th (I have lost my reference and the book is poorly indexed so I don't have the exact date or quote).

It said (from memory) "for the teaching of language, any foreigner will do but for the teaching of specialist subjects there must be appointed men of education".

drat yo'.

And yes, things are tightening up quite a bit these days. No bad thing in my opinion.

Some of this stuff was technically true before that, but you could get away with ignoring it. Some of it is new.

Yeah, I first wandered into China right after graduating. Because I'd been in a program that required a year of student teaching and had worked for a tutoring center for a year, it "counted" and I got my visa--despite it not fitting the letter of the law. Nobody was really enforcing it in 2011--I met a lot of people who got hired at 21 and had Zs. This isn't possible anymore, legally, unless you've got a superhigh degree or specialty.

Definitely get another year of teaching under your belt, get certified, maybe even substitute teach. International schools and universities are, I think, way better than cram or language schools, and practical experience will make finding those jobs easier.

One of my new coworkers is 23 and fresh out of school, and on a Z visa, with our actual employer as his official employer. But they have him listed as an IT consultant rather than as a teacher, and there was an agent and a pile of money involved. Basically almost like places used to do for F visas except it's a Z.

I think that rumor about New Oriental not being able to get Z visas for teachers anymore may be true.

Consider that he still posts all the time in the China threads, he's stuck in Quebec, is considering a 15 hour drive to get a bottle of baijiu because he misses China so bad, and he's still "dating" the same Chinese girl who is stuck at the other end of the planet.

I'm doing pretty good, thanks for asking! I like keeping up with you guys though, so I post in the threads. Honestly though things are going great. My girlfriend and I are doing well. She'll be coming by in a few weeks to stay for a month probably -we're happy and that's what counts I suppose!

However, a few clarifications:

I never sued my employer. I basically visited a lawyer and they gave some advice but I chose not to go forward with it. This cost me nothing except cab fare to the lawyer's office (10 RMB). I did however leave the country legally and in the good graces of the PSB.

Me contemplating driving to Maine (a 6 hour drive) is mostly me enjoying 2 things: going places to meet people and hanging out with goons (always interesting). Baijiu and missing China are a strong part of it, but I can survive without even then.

I probably wouldn't work again in China though! Definitely visit. The other reason is that right now I have a pretty good job I enjoy working for a non-profit.

Also, the idea that I'm *stuck* in my homeland is laughable. I love it here, and I missed it dearly.

If you want me to stop posting in these threads then well, ok, MeramJert! I'll do it as a favor for you.

Right but there's going to be a chunk of time between getting shafted on salary/overtime and being able to hop into a new job. So I'm saying be sorta amiable and half-rear end your job so you have more time to find a new one.

Maybe I should have phrased it as half-rear end the work instead of passive-aggressively deal with people.

I only know koreans who use kakaotalk. LINE is a lot weirder since actual Chinese people use that. Uniqlo and Ito Yokado also give out QR codes you can scan for LINE credit and there's been huge advertising campaigns all around china for the last half-year. LINE will probably get kinda angry about this as they were actually starting to make headway.

Thats why this feels more like blocking it to protect domestic interests more than anything. Who the gently caress cares about LINE?
