Made Captain this morning. Got myself an Explorer Cruiser. It comes loaded with 2 Mark VI Photon Torpedo launchers in the front and one in the back. Is that overkill? Is there any benefit to having 2 fore torpedo launchers? I was thinking of replacing one of them with another phaser array and loading a kinetic torpedo launcher in the front in place and swapping out the one in the back for a phaser turret.

As a reminder for folks, today's the last day of the summer event. If you have any alts who need the ship (and you did it already on a char), run them through the rings tonight or tomorrow morning or you'll have to wait a year.

I just squeaked in - got my internet switched on in my new apartment yesterday afternoon and finished everything off. Four characters, eight ships, and in retrospect I'll probably never use them except for special occasions.

Lorak posted:You don't know how right you are... Sometimes it seems they don't know how to build a ship, despite plenty of evidence available to the contrary. The bad ships are probably just people incrementally upgrading the gear their ship came with. And the average player doesn't have people like you guys to tell them they're wrong. I think a dev defended one of their mission ships (I think it was the Obelisk) by saying they wanted players to see and try abilities they may have never experimented with before. But then you get ships like the Bortasqu with CRF but no cannons... and it's hard to imagine that any thought goes into it at all.

The Enterprise-C is particularly putrid because it has very few ways to significantly increase its damage or survivability. All the boff stations are basically useless.

I just want tovak and worf boff skills. It is the only reason those horrible ship layouts partly work. Specifically, the dyson ship would do well if there was a skill that gave both faw (or beam: overload) and crf in a single go. The ship is ripe and ready for a dbb setup in that regard. Then there wouldn't be issue with running turrets in the back. You would also be able to take better advantage of the cannon as well.

For example, if I've got a cruiser with 4 fore/4 aft weapons then I can run a Romulan Hyper-Plasma Torpedo Launcher in front, a Kinetic Cutting Beam in back, and have beam arrays in all six other slots, no matter how bad the boff station layout is, and even if I had only a Lt. tactical station I could at least throw Tactical Team I and Beam: Fire at Will II on it and I'd still be benefiting/enhancing most of my weapons... again, unlike the build that Lorak posted.

Asimo posted:It's hilarious since the Ambassador, Obelisk, and Dyson ships during their feature episodes have similarly lovely layouts. I have no idea if this is just to make people feel better Hard to say. One torpedo fore and aft is 'lore', though not great-many ships have fired torpedoes whilst running away and whilst closing in. One beam array fore and aft, for the beam look and works well enough. Where things generally fall flat is dealing with the other slots. They tend to put Beam Banks, Cannons/Heavy Cannons or Turrets in those slots. Beam Banks often fall flat because the ship can't turn. Cannons/Turrets because of type-mismatch regarding skills. It's like they're saying 'eh, throw whatever'. I can't help but be reminded of my first posts here on what to do with my ship. Turrets and beam arrays on a Vo'Quv. Idea(Stay on target in a damm slow ship) was right. Execution was lacking. At least I had enough sense to stick to a damage type, but earlier than that I'm not sure I even did.

Hmmm... if I don't have spiralwaves, what's the closest I can get to yellow. Phasers? Biophasers? And possibly biodisruptors, they're yellowish-green, right? Gotta get this spacebarbie right.

Has there been any word that they've been straightening out the clusterfuck of the game's engine and database behind the scenes? I feel like if they did manage to get the game's engine under control, development and content might actually proceed at a higher pace.

I'm cautiously optimistic that they are what with the nature of the fixes and releases they've been doing lately. Crafting is finally getting an overhaul, the traits system was redone, KDF uniforms being fixed, Borg/Undine missions being revised and so on all are things that have needed addressing for some time.

Eh, the UI overhaul reskinned everything, but what the game really needs is a UI reorganisation. All the actual mechanics are hidden behind poo poo and in terrible places because the game evolved weirdly, and instead we have a UI button for Tricorder Scan on the minimap twice the size of the ones for actual gameplay. But yes, I get your point.
