Fun fact: in the first draft of the Independence Day script, Russel Casse (Randy Quaid's character, the drunk guy) wasn't allowed to fly an F-18, and instead flew his cropdusting biplane into battle with an AMRAAM tied underneath to deliver the killing blow. What I wouldn't give to see that version of the movie.

I've seen that deleted scene several times but can't seem to find it online. It's pretty goofy looking.

Snowdens Secret posted:Looks like an F-16 saddled with 1960's jet tech. You don't say... From my understanding, the ADF/LWF wasn't affected all that much by the MiG-25; that was always going to be the Mach 3 battlecruiser that the F-15 would address. Rather, the program was influenced by experiences with the F-104 as well as the smaller, simpler Soviet fighters and fighter-bombers of the time, such as the MiG-21 and -23, as well as the Sukhoi Su-7 family. Basically the ADF/LWF boiled down to "let's get as many jets in the sky as possible for the least amount of cash".

So what you're saying is that the Mig 25/F-15 were the Tie Interceptor to the Mig-21/F-16's Tie Fighter? charliemonster42 posted:You take that back you. <>

Pretty sure it's a deleted scene on most of the DVD releases. It looks really corny, partly because they never finished the CGI all the way.

Ran into this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lip8lPWFLo I remember seeing that a while back. Is there a reason designs haven't come back to that? I'm guessing safety and the profusion of under-wing designs plays a part? Are those designs still more efficient (if they used current tech)?

Jonny Nox posted:co-worker flying up to the Yukon said that the flight wasn't so bad, but he was surprised by the duct tape. Those HS748s are about the most massively over-engineered aircraft I've ever seen; apart from a couple things they are seriously built tough. Air North and First Air loved the hell out of them for their performance. It's younger sibling, the ATP, is another story though (I recall reading that one of the regulars ITT flew one for a while and hated it; can't remember who it is though). The Jetstream, on the other hand, is an aircraft that you will typically see in service because you couldn't find any other 19-seater or you didn't want to blow a pile of cash leasing a Beech 1900.
