I'm pretty sure the astral projection thing is that. Jinora said that it was combination of high level airbending and some spiritual power, so the implication there is that only an airbender could do it. It makes sense: airbending isn't really offensive by nature so having a specialized form devoted to offense wouldn't make much sense, and the air nomad culture as a whole is all about spirituality and detaching oneself from the world. So being able to detach your own spirit from your body would be the logical culmination.

Also it's not like there aren't other inconsistencies between the elements. Why can firebenders just generate fire when everybody else needs to have some of their element around to bend? Why is waterbending the only art lacking an animal precursor and instead derived from a celestial body? It's not exactly a level field all around.

If astral projection and/or some kind of spirit powers are the super airbending abilities, it makes me wonder what the limits are. So far we've only seen Jinora do it to flit around the spirit realm looking for clues/plot devices, but what if someone like Zaheer could weaponize it? Maybe his plan is to utilize spirit powers to possess Korra or somehow otherwise affect or control her spirit and enact the plan of the Red Lotus?

Man, there is a disturbingly large number of people posting screen shots of drugged and kidnapped Korra thrown over Ghazan's shoulder zoomed in on her butt and talking about how "hot" it is. Which is really loving creepy on a shitload of levels.

I wasn't a big fan of the scene where Amon's goons jump Korra in the first season because of the overtones, which some people turned into fan-made porn.

Also, she could put on a drat shirt once in a while, so I wouldn't have to listen to so much of my male friends talking about her boobs. But that's just the self-hating woman in me talking.

I believe Zaheer used Astral Projection in order to find out that Korra was at the Metal Clan (at the end of episode seven). It's certainly possible he'll explore the extent of these spirit powers soon.

If your friends won't stop discussing a animated teenage girl's breasts, there's an issue there, especially because it isn't like she is going to battle in a bikini or something.

So, did anyone else think that Su Yin might be part of the Red Lotus? She seemed...a little too outraged after the incursion on Zhao Fu, she was 'interrogated' by a guy who was later proven to be lying and part of the conspiracy, and her decision to send Korra off after the Red Lotus with Team Avatar seems...strange. A lot of her mannerisms seemed too overt during episode 8 to just be coincidence. Su Yin was definitely running around the world during the time when Zaheer and the others would've been starting up, and she's been know to run with criminals before... Just seems a bit suspicious to me.

It's possible but I think what is going on is that Su Yin is a lot like her sister. Lin responded very very similar when 'her' city was attacked. So she made a decision because she's extremely pissed off and wants the Avatar to kick rear end.

It's very possible that she is in fact evil but I think it was trying to show how much she is like her sister.

I'd read theories like this before I watched the episode, since I got to it late, and so I was looking for hints throughout and...No, I don't think she is. She clearly sees all of Zhao Fu as her home and the people there as family, and in turn took someone selling out her city like that as a deeply personal betrayal. At the time she was interrogated she also still trusted Ai Wei, and she seemed pretty broken up over his betrayal as well. Sending Korra off after Ai Wei fits with her desire to see such a two-fold betrayal brought to justice.

Basically, Su Yin is still Toph's daughter and Lin's sister and I think that last episode just showed us more of her Beifong side than we'd really been seeing before.

Edit: Goddamnit, ImpAtom! :argh:

The sexualization is one thing. I remember in the season thread someone linked to a reddit discussion where they were estimating Korra's breast size. Weird and creepy, but, you know, reddit so what do you expect.

But "wow, drugging and carrying off a girl so I can have sexy times with her, so hot" is a whole different level of completely hosed up; one I'd gladly nuke from orbit.

Never mind that Korra, being the literal incarnation of the divine, is a symbol of woman empowerment and that adds another whole layer of hosed up to it.

I wonder how it works. We saw Firebenders bending Lava before, didn't we, when Roku's island went up? So I wonder if it's a case where it's just a unique Earthbending talent or if it's some kind of mixed bending.

Ohhh. That makes so much sense from a story prospective. I was really wondering where they were going with that. The only thing I could think of was that he would meet a wandering Toph and get some sage advice from her. But Bolin grasping lava bending in a time of need seems like where this is headed.

ImpAtom
May 24, 2007

The only reason I have a hard time imagining Bolin lavabending is that it seems like... awful lethal. Everything it does is kind of sheer bad guy violence, although I guess Mako uses lightning pretty regularly and Bolin could master some kind of defense against it instead of making lava-shurikens.

Just like Waterbenders can shift from ice to water to steam, shouldn't it theoretically be possible to shift from rock to lava to... superheated silicate vapor? If so, uh, holy poo poo. :stare:

EDIT: The boiling point of SiO2 (the main component of most rocks) is 2,230 degrees C. A jet of silicon dioxide vapor would be able to melt through solid steel.

Katara and Toph were both able to mudbend in the drill ep, so lavabending is probably something like that.

I seem to recall that the only people who ever lavabended before Ghazan were past Avatars like Roku and some other guy. So while it could be a firebending thing, the fact that Ghazan does it probably shows that it's strictly earthbending-related.

Waterbending into ice and steam actually makes sense to me considering that they're just changing the shapes of the same substance into one thing and another. And water is the element of change, so it makes "sense" that it'd be the easiest to shift between one form and the next...solid, liquid, and gas. I mean, "make sense" insofar that it's some kind of literal moon magic, of course.

It actually makes me wonder some things about earthbending. Can it "repair" rocks and stone? Like if someone smashes all the rocks around you to tiny gravels, can you somehow gather those pieces back into bigger rocks? If you knock a block of stone out of the ground as benders on the show tend to do, can you put that block back exactly as it was and repair the cracked ground you just made so that there was no damage to the earth at all, or is there just gonna be a cracked block there forever?
