It's not at all the customer's responsibility to entice newbies and keep them playing. Yes I am basically saying don't hate the player, hate the game.

The trash talk is tiring at this point but it's something everyone has gotta deal with. It's in every game, unless you want the WoW solution where opposing factions are completely barred from communicating with one another.

Newbies should get a shitton of free poo poo so they can compete with BR100 players, rank 2 in everything and all the default guns specced out is not to much to ask. Vehicles should have atleast rank 1 in everything including weapons. Let them see what its like to play with all the different belt options, give them some C4/medkits.

Fire whoever thinks being new should be a loving horrible experience.

1/2x reflex sights for the default guns cost 10-15 certs which is basically 3 minutes of sticking your medic/repair gun at things that have bars on top of them and for the most part that's all your main weapons need to be usable.

Tank mines and C4 are indeed bullshit expensive for the first rank though.

New player tutorial just needs to be "Press Enter on number pad to mute whomever is currently talking" and how to ignore people from the chat box. Took me a few weeks to learn about the quick-mute and it has made the game 99% more fun not having people with lovely audio setup attempting to play bad music over proximity chat.

you know the only people that get shot in the back of the head by smg Infiltrators are people that have music playing and can't hear them coming from half a grid away.

Guild wars 2 has a similar system where the only way to communicate to enemies in 100v100v100 was by emotes or inviting them into your party. The designated subforum to talk about fights was closed just over one and a half years. They quite literally told the community to go create their own forum for hackusations and smack talk because the (very active) moderators were sick of banning people.

Unlike RPGs where new players have a lot to learn, FPSs have an estalished tradition of guttermouth poo poo talking because they're easy to pick up. It's probably in SOE's favor to keep people fighting each other than exclusively complaining about :soe: to fix the game or make things suck less for new players.

The best poo poo is that dude was totally loving paid to do this and he still hosed it up hard. He knew absolutely nothing about the loving game AT ALL, surprise everyone hes playing with has a horrible experience when they have some idiot shouting at the PL. He picks a loving saturday when the servers are already at load to invite 100+ extra players and then invites 300+ other idiots to join him.

This went bad because everyone involved in planning it is mentally retarded. Do you think 2 platoons of total newbies will ever fare better against hardened loving players? Every time he tries this its going to fall on its face constantly because hes going to have 96 newbies against atleast 30 skilled players who will kill 3x their number at the very least.

This event should have literally been him leading those 3 platoons to VR and giving them lessons on how the game works, what a point is and how the cert system works. Make some introduction videos or show wrels ones then create the AJA outfit and just start off small. No big event just have them all play the game for a week and learn the ropes THEN have a big event.

It wouldn't have mattered if they'd picked a faction with better leadership than Emerald TR because they weren't really co-ordinating even with the leadership structure Emerald TR has, or with any internal leadership their force had, with any instructions more clear than "go here, shoot mans". You can make events like this work but they have to be run or assisted by someone who can actually use the numbers they draw, otherwise they inevitably turn into a) boring ghostcaps or b) running facefirst into a buzzsaw.

Ultima Ratio Regum
This is a PvP game, the only things you can do as a new player are ghostcap - which will not make you stick around - or get in fights with people who are probably going to beat you. Anyone coming into the game has to expect to some extent that they're going to have it rough at the outset. It's true of practically every online FPS that exists solely because of the importance of map knowledge and understanding battle flow, and there aren't many games with a more complex iteration of that than this one. I'm not sure there's anything SOE or any other company that makes an online shooter can do about that. Map sense isn't a skill you can teach, it's something you have to learn by playing.

If you want to call anyone out for lovely behavior, call out the TR themselves. Apparently AOD and other outfits were TKing the stream followers on sight and destroying their vehicles in warpgate. There's a pretty significant difference between the enemy beating your rear end and your own team doing it.

I sent Joe an email in hopes he'll stick around. Maybe this could be used as a general "How to PS2" :geno:

quote:

I hope you will take this into consideration and inform your outfit mates as well.

First lets talk certs, you get a single cert for every 250 xp you earn. They can buy most things outside of cosmetics, including guns if you don't want to shell out 7 bucks for one. In the beginning they are hard to come by, and if you don't know what you're going into buying you may regret it cause there are no certification refunds in the game. Killing players does give xp, but generally support can give even better xp with less risk to yourself, and killing vehicles are really nice in giving xp. Here is what I recommend to new players:

Decide to either be an engineer or a medic for a bit, you'll be spending certs to make more certs so you'll want to focus on one so you aren't spending more certs then you're willing to spend. Both classes have a tool, repair for engineer and heal for medics. Ranking either up will extend their range, for engineers they repair faster at higher ranks. For medics their guns heal faster and revive players with more life (up to 100% at max rank). Note this very important thing about the medicgun: You need to RIGHT CLICK to revive players. LEFT clicking only heals, and you can't heal a dead man. This is so people wont accidentally heal people when they want to revive a person. I recommend engineer tool to 3 and medigun to 5, minimum.

Another thing you'll want to look into is the ammo pack for engineer and the regeneration shield for the medic. More ranks into the ammo pack extends both the time the pack is on the ground and the distance the pack resupplies. The regeneration shield makes player's shield regenerate faster then normal, more ranks in the shield extends the range of the field and regens shields faster. Note that there is a rather punishingly low cap on ammo resupply xp, after a point you stop getting xp till you die. This is to stop players who would drop an ammo pack then have people shoot and reload then resupply. You'll also really want to get the revive grenades on medic as well as grenade bandolier. Basically its a grenade that instead of killing people it makes people come alive, it can revive up to 6 people and it has a very generous radius. And its a grenade, you wont have to expose yourself and risk being shot while reviving someone.

From there after getting into the flow of being a support class you can expand into the other classes. You may want to grab the motion spotter for the infiltrator, it drops a beacon on the ground that constantly shows where nearby enemies are and where they are facing. You also get xp for enemies that are killed within the radius, personally for a while I would just drop one and make a sandwich and walk back to a nice chunk of certs in bigger fights. Light assaults really need their jump jets certed up, it increases the fuel tank and makes them regenerate faster so its easier to get to higher places. And going up high is actually really, really useful cause players have problems looking up. You'll want to grab C4 on the light assault cause the ability to fly over a group of players and dropping a C4 in the middle of them is great, also 2 bricks will kill any non sunderer vehicle. For heavies you'll really want to grab the ground to air rocket launcher (Grounder), it can still dumbfire and can lock onto air vehicles.

Lets talk vehicles now, you should REALLY get the AMS upgrade installed on your sunderer. It allows you to deploy the sundy as a mobile spawn point, everyone in your outfit should have it so there will always be someone to pull one as needed. Note that for sundies as well as galaxies people in your squad can deploy straight into them even if they're on the move as long as a squad member is driving it. The basilisk are actually pretty good weapons, if only in short range as they can wreck pretty much everything that gets close.A sundy with blockade armor and dual basilisks can take on tanks. On your gal you'll want to get the bulldogs on the wings as they are great at killing infantry and covering gal drops.

And that is it, grabbing those things will definitely make earning certs go much smoother! Now please don't take this the wrong way but I noticed you making a few gameplay mistakes as well as being uninformed about changes.

- I noticed a few times you would stare at a friendly or an enemy and give a few shots before realizing they were friendly or an enemy, and I believe its cause you're confused with the friend or foe identifier, you can actually change the colors in the options menu. By default friendlies are blue, enemies are red but on the map its all faction colors. You may want to change it so the IFF shows empire colors so TR is red, NC is blue and VS is purple so its easier to know who is who. Also push Q, if its a friendly nothing happens, if its an enemy your character will call them out (enemy heavy, enemy medic, etc.) and a chevron will appear over their head.

-Sometimes you just hold down the fire button, you need to fire in shorter bursts. A half second rest can be the difference between your shots dancing around your target and them actually hitting your target.

- I saw you using small arms fire against a liberator, that doesn't work. Liberators and galaxies can only be hurt by rockets and vehicle weapons. However! ESFs like the scythe and reaver can be damaged by small arms fire. In fact a bunch of infantry firing their weapons at an esf can chase off the esf if not kill it.

- Your personal squad was around 6 people, you should stick with a full 12. You get more xp in all gains relating to getting xp, like if you spot an enemy and someone in your squad kills them you get squad spot bonus and its worth more xp then spotting for a non member. Or squad revives are worth more xp then reviving players that aren't in your squad. Also you can get a beacon that allows people in your squad to drop down on the beacon.

- Your heavy shield, you randomly turn it on and off at the wrong times. The shield makes you run slower so if you're trying to run for cover you may be better off not turning on your shield for that extra speed. Always turn it on when you're about to engage then turn it off when no enemies are around so the ability regenerates.

- You would walk near or stare straight into enemy spawn rooms. You take damage when near the spawn rooms, and the enemy can actually look out and shoot out of the spawn room shields and doors. Even though its a solid force field on the outside people on the inside can look right out of it, often "spawn room heroes" just go to bases to shoot people out of spawn rooms with no threat to themselves.

- Lattice links, this was added after the game was released and basically it means bases can only be captured if they are linked to one of your bases. Your base needs to be fully secured though, if a point is flipped or if there is a timer going on (so you flip the point back, you need to wait till it counts back up and it says "Base defended") you will not be able to capture the next base, you wont even be able to set off generators.

- You mentioned nanoweave, just to let you know about this is that it will not protect you in regards to headshots. Also it does NOT stack with the heavy shield, honestly you may want to put something else in your heavy's suit slot (grenade bandolier with anti vehicle grenades can work wonders against maxes)

Thats about it, if you want to know more feel free to respond to the email! Good luck and hope to see you on the battlefield! Don't let what happened turn you away, its always tough in the beginning!

The game has a rather vertical learning curve and showing a bunch of newbies the ropes by having another newbie lead them is as someone already said a recipe for ghost capping or running face first into a buzzsaw.
