I've run into a small issue. I'm trying to piss off westridge as much as I can. During the Intercept Nasri mission, he should give a -1 if you alert the guards. However, I've picked the "chrismas trees" dialogue option and didn't get an opinion penalty. More than that, when I disable/kill the guards I get a +1. Is there a way to use the mission introduction to get him to -3 or -4 (opinion from tutorial & SaudiArabia tv dialogue currently gives me -2)?

In order to get the -1 during the Nasri mission you need to let the guard actually trigger the alarm. So after the dialogue ends, just wait for him to approach the alarm panel.

Also, you can get at least -2 from the tutorial (possibly even -3) and another -3 from the opening conversation in Saudi, so it's possible to reach -4 regardless of how you handle the Nasri intro.

double nine posted:

another item: end game news voiceover. Does killing Nasri give a different ending for Saudi Arabia than capturing the prick?

I don't think so. Whether you chose to kill or arrest him only matters during the actual game, the news report at the end will be the same either way.

I have a problem that makes this game unplayable:

in the three tests at the beginning of the game, in the test where you talk to the ... man, I think... you have to climb a ladder, hack something, then walk through tracking beams and then do a silent takedown on some guy?

Every time I do the silent takedown on that one guy, I get a crash to desktop. I tried tons of things but couldn't even see anyone else with this same error, post anything about it online.

The PC port of Alpha Protocol is really buggy in parts, though I've never heard of this particular issue. Based on your description it sounds like there might be a missing file, so try verifying your game cache, if you haven't already. As Scorchy pointed out, you could just skip the tutorial, or you could still do it but run past the guy in question (taking him down is not a requirement for completing the challenge).

Huh. I just encountered new dialogue. In the greybox, I did Parker's special task and did the shooting gallery spraying as many bullets across the level as possible, leading to a score of 25. Never bothered to go to darcy. When talking to Westridge, at one point he says "I wouldn't think any less of you". This time, however, he said "I wouldn't think any less of you [beat] Well, not any less than I already do."

Okay, I'm going crazy here. This has to be a bug. Can someone confirm this? Nasri mission: purchased all the intel, but the weapon shipping subgoal (the one in the last chamber before Nasri) will not show up. The only explanation I have is that the subgoal (and the interactable object) will not spawn if you allow the guards at the beginning of the level to go on alert, but don't defeat them.

AKA: 1. start mission. 2. pick suave. 3. Wait for guards to go on alert. 4. run away. 5. goal "defeat guards" never goes away. 6. subgoal at end of level doesn't spawn.

It's the only explanation i have for it not showing up. It's infuriating.

Did you die and Continue instead of exiting to the main menu and reloading? That sounds a lot like the effect that this bug has (causes random objectives and enemies to disappear, sometimes moving primary objectives back to areas of the map that are no longer reachable). I once spent half an hour stuck in the Moscow train station because of that.

edit2: One bit of writing that I particularly liked was the way the initial encounter with SIE at the train station plays out. The mission always ends up with one of them trying to convince the other party to work with them, despite the party in question not being very keen on the idea. The neat thing about it is that this conversation depends on your reputation with SIE at that point, but the lines are identical in both cases, the two sets of lines are just swapped.

It must depend on your reputation with him and your responses towards him, I've never once heard him say that in 5-6 playthroughs. That said, I almost always kill his rear end, because it's just so goddamn satisfying hearing that 'boo, loving, hoo'. God, I love Thorton's voice actor. People complained about him being too flat, but he goddamn nailed that scene.

I finally decided to pick AP up again after finding this thread.

I decided to go with the Soldier class, but I'm still trying to use stealth as much as possible. I just did the Nasiri mission, and was able to sneak a few areas, but had to shoot my way through the rest. I've been putting the points I've been earning into Stealth & Sabotage. Should I be putting points into anything else?

Also, when aiming, is there a way to switch which shoulder you aim over?

Put points into pistols and watch everybody drop dead from Chainshot and Technical Aptitude so you can use Brilliance and do another Chainshot right after. Also keep in mind that Stealth in AP, while really good, is more meant for combat than pure ghosting.

Bumpin this thread like a motherfucker because I can't stop playing this game. Still haven't beat it, and I'm already looking forward to my next playthroughs.

It's funny. I bought it when it was released (because I always do that with Obsidian's stuff), but couldn't stand it. A combination of minor things--Thorton's goony crouch animation, the hacking minigame, JC-Denton-Liberty-Island baseline weapons skills--left me with a bad impression, and I only made it through one Saudi mission before losing interest.

I don't have much money for games at the moment, so I went through my never-finished Steam games last week and reinstalled AP. Still didn't much like it at first, but I really started getting into it when I realized how much poo poo I wasn't seeing--the end of Saudi was the first hint that my choices had some pretty major consequences. After that, I was sold. Can't wait to play it again.

Edit: Just discovered a friend of mine from high school worked on this. Glad he did well for himself.

In my opinion the most interesting thing about this game is that there are just as many choices you don't even necessarily realize you're making and the minor consequences they can have. They have thought of so many small things and even when you just get a small perk for it, it's insane realizing they thought of it :allears:

Right, sometimes on a playthrough I'd see something turn out a little bit differently, and it was exciting because I couldn't be completely sure exactly what I did to make that happen. Little changes in dialogue when I'd thought I was doing things just the same as a previous playthrough, all the way up to moments I had no idea were even a thing. For Pete's sake, you can go through the whole game and never even know SIE exists.

A somewhat unrelated note, but my favorite crouch animation is still Adam Jensen's in DX:HR, just because you can have him smoothly dance like a boss while in cover by tapping alternating directions. Thorton's didn't bug me, but I can't say I paid too much attention to it!

Uh, so I just finished the game. Major spoilers.

I was friendly with literally everyone except SIE but she wasn't much in my game so I kinda shrugged that off. Called in a ton of favors, had Albatross as my handler. I'd slept with Mina but didn't rescue her (I constantly sacrificed people eg St. James for the greater good) and Yancy found her and killed her. So I killed him. Killed Leland. Killed Darcy. Convinced Parker to help me.

Marburg got away; no idea what happened to Scarlet.

I know I shouldn't expect anything less from Obsidian, but the writing in this game is incredible. I'm peeking under some of the spoilers posted throughout the thread, and some of what I'm reading I can't believe--it's so entirely different from my run that it feels like it isn't even the same plot. The game sets new standards for story interactivity, and games that helped set the benchmark for it (Deus Ex) and games that pretend to do so (Mass Effect) don't come even remotely close.

Starting a new (recruit) run now. Probably do a veteran run after that.

Edit: I'd even say that the game is a great spiritual successor to Deus Ex (not in the story or theme so much as in the RPG mechanics and the desire to make a new kind of interactivity), and like Deus Ex, it's also frighteningly prescient.

edit: purely suave recruit is already loving hilarious

When you're in Russia, if you don't do that trainyard mission that ends with a boss fight against her (do all the other Russia missions and take the priority mission to finish the hub), you never meet SIE and the game drops all future references to her, pretty much. Of course, that means you miss out on a whole mission full of stuff, but the game basically assumes that SIE doesn't exist after that point.

It ended with me and my main bro Heck (who I had spent the whole time encouraging) sailing off into the sunset probably gonna cause some more chaos as we try to discover if it was an Aloha Protocol within an Alpha Protocol, Heck is the best.
