I just did the maths, and it seems like at 150 dil to a zen and current exchange prices, buying stacks of contra and converting to Zen would give you 1 zen per 15882 EC. And buying Master Key 10-packs and selling them for EC would give you 25688 EC per zen. It seems like you could make money from nothing simply by buying contra, converting to zen, buying keys, and selling on the exchange, in an infinite cycle assuming they hold near current prices. Did my maths gently caress up somewhere?

This would work, but isn't there a time limit on how much contraband you can turn into dil? Also do you need to refine the dil you get from the contraband thing?

If so that's essentially your bottleneck in the whole process, meaning that there's a limit on how much you can actually fund this.

How much does contraband sell for in terms of EC? I assume it's more than 25,000?

You can convert 8000 dilithium per day (plus 500/day from the fleet mine, plus 1000/2days from the academy if you're a veteran). The upper limit here is basically limited to the number of alts you're willing to throw at it, and more importantly, how much time you're willing to waste jumping between alts over and over every four hours to turn the contraband in. Unless you're heavily scripting this (which seems highly subject to lag and other factors) there's an effective cap of sorts there. It's also heavily dependent on the current exchange rate and the current cost of contraband.

At the moment contraband tends to vary between 42,000 and 48,000 a pop, usually more towards the lower end.

.
Even assuming extremely favorable prices on contra and zen (40k ec and 150 dil, respectively), with the 9500/day limit your profit comes to just over 600k ec/day. Which is not insignificant, but probably not worth the amount of work involved.

With more reasonable contra and zen prices (45k ec and 155 dil) and the more likely 8500/day dilithium limit, profit is only about 450k/day. Definitely not worth the effort, in my opinion.

No, I know for sure you're the caustic German guy that got in shouting matches with Tonto on mumble, but I'm thinking you're also the scummy rear end in a top hat that was scamming the poo poo out of Mangoes and scamming fellow goons is poor form when there are so many pubbies to victimize.

I have _no_ idea what you are talking about, and I never scammed anybody anywhere. The last time I played I regularly threw my money and crafting mats at any goon so they could level up and make poo poo, and that was many years ago long before Romulans or well, any content. My empty game bank account should be able to attest to that.

Science officers are rather underpowered compared to any other class. I stopped leveling my Romulan Science and instead ground out a Romulan Tac, because you know, scimitar OP.

Meh, not sure. There was rumors of some changes for science officers, but don't really know if they were true or not. With a tac scimitar, its literally a cake walk carrying pubs in elite STFs. All you need is your dps over 20k average, and you'll carry most matches.

Keep the alt for contra turnins if nothing else. Stick with the tac for actual play until you get bored of it though.

Well for one thing you should stick to a single type of energy and stack the best tac consoles for that energy type you can. That alone will probably see you killing poo poo way easier.

This is honestly a bit outdated. Science is actually in a pretty decent spot at the moment. It has an offense space skill (sensor scan), a defense skill (scattering field), and two unique skills (photonic fleet and subnucleonic beam). The science ground skills are a nice spread of healing, crowd control, and raw damage too. Tactical is still better in practice since PVE is so easy that all that really matters is sheer damage output, but I wouldn't feel bad having a science main. It's certainly more... varied in play, anyway.

It's Engineers that are the bottom of the pile right now. All their space skills are defensive or revolve around power usage, and power levels haven't really been relevant since warp cores, certain duty officers, and gradual mudflation have left it trivially easy to stay at max weapon power, so that basically killed the one big damage boost engineers had. Defensive skills are nice, but you shouldn't be dying in PVE anyway. There's still some use for them as PVP healers, but... eh. :smith:

Obviously Romulan-race anything is the best though, whatever class you pick.

I mostly did the WoW "clownsuit" approach, using mission (quest) rewards to upgrade my ship or ground equipment if the reward item looked better.

Around level 27 or so, I did try equipping weapons of one damage type (disruptor) but then I hit 30 and got a new ship/new items, and the upgrades always SEEMED so much better and were flooding in. Apparently not so much.

It's one of those things that just doesn't matter when you're levelling because the content is so piss easy. When you start doing elite STF missions, you want to have your build follow some basic groundrules so that you're doing the best job you can.

The sad part is that I don't even know what I've done wrong yet.

Top to bottom:

Don't mix Cannons/Turrets and Beams. It means you're spending valuable bridge officer skill slots on catering to both, or leaving one type out in the cold in terms of your skills.

Pick an energy type. Or, if you'd rather, pick a colour. Stick to it. Doesn't matter if it's common.

Mines are....ill-favoured at present. Generally, most people go with one torpedo in the front and throw energy weapons into everything else.

You generally want to set yourself up to have has much of your stuff firing on your target as possible. Example: Escorts, which have high turning, tend to load their semi-unique weapon type-the Dual Heavy Cannons-up front, with Turrets in the back. Massive frontal damage from Cannon and Turrets, and as they swing round for another pass, the 360 arc turrets keep hitting. Science can do a similar trick with the lesser 'light' Cannons, or do Cruiser 'Broadsiding'.

Cruisers, being slow turners for the most part, tend to run all Beam Arrays. The arcs of the front and back Arrays overlap on the side, allowing all guns to fire. A 'Broadside'.

Tactical consoles follows on from 'don't mix cannons/beams' and 'don't mix energy types'. Given equal Mark and Rarity(Colour), a +Cannon or +Beam damage(Which works on everything of the type) will give less damage than a +Energy(Which works on only a certain energy type). Simple, right? So stacking up multiple of a single energy type console will get you the most damage.

The campaign design has mostly +Beam and +Cannon consoles because it kinda expects you to hodge-podge it on the way up. This is good for the way up, but you can do better now.

Because there's so many people at 50, prices for white, green or even blue Mark 10-11 stuff on the Exchange is for the most part massively low, assuming you want to do it all for yourself.

Even I keyed into how useless that thing seemed to be.

It's not useless, but you don't need to EQUIP this device to USE it. It's one of only a few space devices that works this way.

The overall philosophy behind the advice people are giving you here is that when you're fighting, you want to get into a position where as many of your weapons are firing on the target simultaneously, so you need them arranged so they all overlap in their firing arcs at some angle. Then you want skills that enhance as many of your weapons simultaneously as possible, which means having all beams or all cannon/turret-type. And then you want tactical consoles that enhance every one of your weapons as much as possible, which means all the same energy type so you can fill it up with +energytype damage consoles.

This tends to boil down to two builds: fill your ship with beam arrays front and aft and then sit sideways so that you're at the angle where the fore and aft weapons arcs overlap and they're all firing, or put dual heavy cannons on the front and turrets on the back and just point the front of your ship at the enemy.

Also throw a torpedo into a lot of builds because more than seven active weapons drains your power too fast.
