Yeah, the ultimate problem is that I suspect Cryptic (or PWE) was expecting the crafting update to be a huge draw and sunk a lot of time and effort behind the scenes I hate being down on Cryptic since there's a lot of effort put in and the patch was still an overall improvement to the game (new uniforms, killing the expansion clusters), but... eeeeh. If you were going to take a break for a few months now would really be the best time. DonDoodles posted:Thanks for all the feedback on the new video, guys. It's been great. I can say 'it was always meant to be'. It was always 3-5x the base damage. Removing the drain is good. Auto-crit is also nice. Even if it was one beam it's still a damage boost. Problem is most of the ships that are meant to be using it(Cruisers and Sci) don't have the Tactical room to experiment, and AOE damage is always thin on the ground and is more required(especially these days) than any single-target. There are better options anyway, like Omega and Beta. ...The Recluse might like it, though. And I can imagine even in PvE people might try the 'adding one Beam for Overload' with Escorts now. We may see a return of the classic 3xDHC, 1xDBB escorts. Since the drain is gone you'll be wanting BO3. Actually you may want to limit yourself to just 2xDHC and whack on a torpedo with a high yield as well. May as well go all out for the punch through combo. I guess while we're on the topic, the auto-crit favors CritD tactical consoles too. Best ship for this? The 5 tactical console fleet Ar'Kirf. You also get the added bonus of a battle cloak and a hanger.

Yeah, lots of escorts have an extraneous Tac Ensign they can throw BO1 on, and now you can get an omni-directional beam in any energy type to replace a turret. Besides the obvious 3 DHC, 1 DBB old setup.

Can an omni-directional beam get an [over] modifier as well as [arc]? If so that'll be best, I guess. Also RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE.

Letting players run duplicates would allow players to max a single one in a couple of months, which might not change much now but in late Sep. it might bring the prices down enough for regular players to start using the new equipment. Also, a two month grind is a lot less daunting than a year long one.

The (equally lovely) Neverwinter crafting system isn't quite designed the same, but there's a similar idea behind and it and you can definitely run multiples of the same job as often as slots allow even if there's nothing quite equivalent to the 20-hour big-XP jobs STO has. It's pretty clear that being able to run multiple XP jobs in a single school was completely intentional (so you could max one out in a month or three without spending dilithium, rather than sometime next near) but apparently that wasn't meeting PWE's metric for monetization or somethingso it got crippled quickly. Considering how rushed the patch was, it makes me wonder if it was intended for season 10 and was heavily rushed as a stopgap after the summer event ended when it became clear the content patch was still a while out. I've said way too much about it, but really the saddest thing is I just don't... care? I don't even hate it, it's just completely irrelevant and I'm glad they didn't try to force some giant mandatory dilithium sink onto everyone. The only real thing that's worrying is that STO's mostly thrived so far on having an incredibly permissive F2P scheme (yeah yeah, $25 ships and gamble boxes... but you can go completely from start to endgame without ever spending a cent if you really wanted to) and the revamped crafting is the first real blatant sign of that being whittled away by PVE. Ah well.

Crafting was kind of a confidence killer, if only that besides being a cynical cash grab posing as a content update its really, really useless for like, the first 100 days at best. They really dropped the ball in every conceivable way. I've got over 100k unrefined each on three alts so I'm probably just going to take a break for a few weeks.

Neverwinter only lets you run three copies of the same mission, even if you have all the slots unlocked and the only useful thing to actually run is leadership which is pretty much what the rest of the duty officer system is here, gives you random stuff and diamonds to buy Zen with.

Yeah that's the problem with the whole crafting system you need to hit lvl 15 in a school before it's worthwhile to do anything other than queue the 20 hr xp projects. So that's like 3 months of queue and logoff with no reason to actual do anything. It's a shame really I was hoping we'd all be trying out some of the queues we usually ignore for the crafting packs but you just don't need that poo poo because the xp projects are all 1 common material every 20-24 hours.

Some people are rushing through, but once exchange prices crater (Thanks pubbies!) there won't be much of a reason to rush, or even do it at all. Crafting wasn't just a big undertaking by the devs, it was something PWE has been pushing for since they bought Cryptic so I'm curious what plan B is if the new "content" doesn't meet zen projections.

That's pretty much how NW leadership works too, ~2-3 months of xp grinding to max out the school before you start raking in free cash. Problem is in STO you get that long grind before you can throw more resources at gambling for equipment. In NW the actual crafting schools can be maxed out in about 24hrs without paying rush costs. Guess we just got the worst of both worlds. az posted:I have _no_ idea what you are talking about Sorry, further research revealed that the scumbag I was remembering was @akula. My dad is a 64 year old Vietnam/Desert Storm vet loving loves Star Trek. He has an entire half of his house with those Japanese ship models, set pieces from the Original series, Next Gen and even a bunch of animation cells from the animated series. Goes to conventions atleast once a year, the whole 9 yards. So when my siblings and I got him a new computer to play games on a year or so ago, this game seemed like a no brainer. Man had never played an MMO, but loves the Star Fleet Academy games so I figured he'd be OK with this. I got him a copy and lifetime sub (which, btw, $200.. Jesus) He plays the game for about two months and quits. I asked him why, not even really caring about the $200 I burned for his account, just legitimately curious how a Star Trek game could fail in his eyes. His answer was "Everyone who plays it is some kind of bullshit bikini wearing cry-baby human being" After reading the pubbie stories in this thread, I see why

So I have just turned level 50 and wondered what the hell to do now? A cursory google search revealed a bunch of threads on the official forums about getting new uniforms and the likes which I clearly dont give a gently caress about. Do you get a new fancy ship at level 50 or do ya stick with your level 40 one and grind out fleet marks etc?

Zartek posted:So I have just turned level 50 and wondered what the hell to do now? You don't get a free new ship at 50, that's when you start saving up for a lockbox or fleet ship. Since new 50's tend to be too broke to think much about those right away, a good intermediate step is a mirror ship. There's usually several mirror ships in the fleet banks or you can try asking in chat. Or game mail Vicius@g0del, I'll give you a free mirror ship.

I'd say start with dyson, just because the battlezone shits out marks. That said, the daily mark bonus is making it easier to simultaneously grind.

Yeah you get most of the EC back by selling the crap from the rep boxes. The expertise is a non-issue as well that's only 10k a day for all five reps it used to be 10k per rep. Seriously get a AHK script to mash the spacebar for you and runn a foundry farm while you do something else for 15 minutews and you'll have all the EC/XP you need for all five reps. Even the marks are piss easy to get thanks to the daily bonus.
