So some sysadmin client of the vet posted this on reddit:

It's a vet's office and it's so animals don't pee on it.

I mean, it makes sense, except for the fact a shelf would be so much safer...

(for reference http://www.reddit.com/r/mildlyinteresting/comments/2cam35/the_computers_at_my_vet_are_suspended_with/)

EDIT for ticket content:

I'm working with a client sysadmin to get logs from the chassis itself. I explain him how to do it with mutiple times stating which device to get the logs from. He send me back a log from a different device that of course some of the commands fail. :(
I guess it could be a language barrier (guy is in Argentina supporting a system in the US)

One of the coolest things I've ever seen my boss do was respond to an idiot like this. Guy wrote an email in nearly all caps and underlines demanding a new phone computer setup IMMEDIATELY!!! My boss responded that his equipment would be ordered when we got to it since everyone else had put in their new hire orders ahead of time and that his would have to wait. And that if he was having issues with his keyboard being stuck on caps that he should submit a ticket to the help desk. Guy shut up right there.

Goddamn.

Tech sends in a ticket:
:downs: HDD is causing a blue screen error, I need a new hdd.
:v: Sure, did you do the hdd test? (As per policy, no hdd test no new hdd)
:downs: Yup!
:v: ??? And what did it say?

No response. Those emails were all sent within minutes and he just stopped responding, and this ticket was there first thing in the morning so...
I guess he'll have to survive without that hdd.
I mean he really should know the company policy is to always run the hdd test if a hdd error is suspected. Most of our customers know this and will call in after performing the test, but now our own tech can't be loving bothered.

Every so often we get tickets from managers asking to block social media like facebook, and they always get shot down. Why? Because marketing wants people to be able to crow about how great their job is while at work.

Didn't stop them from blocking all gaming related websites except Polygon ( :barf: ) and the forums :argh:

I applied because I was told, repeatedly, after glowing "exceeds expectations" reviews, that it was not feasible to make me a Systems Admin II, from my level 1 position. According to the job description I was already doing the job, just didn't get the title or pay for it. I was told over and over to "keep up the good work" and "stay the course" and "next year we'll see about career patching to a senior position" and all the usual management BS.

Today, my newly vacant position was posted. As a level 2. It went up at 1530, and at 1531 I stopped giving a poo poo about the next 2 weeks of projects and tickets. gently caress 'em.

They'll still get my documentation and everything but holy poo poo I almost got vertigo from how fast my morale dropped.
Apply for that job.

If it's a netbook, I'd just yank the drive, back up the few documents on it (and scan them with a known-good system), and nuke-and-pave the sucker. Probably just as quick in terms of all the updates required.

If a lot of the trouble is outdated java and stuff, I would recommend the ninite updater. 30 USD a year for 5 computers, 10 bux for a single. https://ninite.com/updater/

Java is required for online banking (were, can use your cell now), and java updates was far above my mother in laws skills. After I got ninite updater, I haven't had a complaint. Because she bought an ipad, and wife works with those daily, and can deal with it.

Teamviewer is a little gem. No sign up required. Works on almost anything. Is free (for personal use). Doesn't get hosed up by firewalls.

A goon gave me this tip, I've been using it to watch movies and videos that are pc only when I'm on my phone in bed or outside. So long as your on local wifi, and direct IP connect (you can direct IP connect in teamviewer) it works pretty well.
