onenote is actually pretty good note-taking software, but microsoft has this weird obsession with pushing it on people who have absolutely no reason to use it. their material is all "use it to plan vacations! make a shopping list that the wife can update from home while the bumbling husband tries to shop! research online purchases! compile a detailed dossier on your suburban enemies! help your kid with a book report somehow!"

i will actually white knight for microsoft on this one

excel is as good as it is because microsoft talked to actual human users and discovered people used spreadsheets for a thousand unexpected purposes, most especially list-making. their competitors didn't. lotus and amipro and visicalc are gone and office is still here

all those weird-sounding onenote use cases are probably real

sorry guys, i've been using it since it came out in 2003 or so and onenote is poo poo. it is a deep dark hole that information goes in to die. onenote's file 'format' is a complete clusterfuck with the onenote file being represented by a folder and all kinds of other poo poo. this makes it stupidly hard to send to someone in an email or even just backup. for the longest time onenote actively fought against you trying to think about where it stored its data and just blissfully assumed that of course there's only ever one machine that has your data, why would you EVER want it on multiple machines?

searching for information in a onenote is total poo poo too and god help you if your organization wants people to use onenote to store information shared between multiple users. you can setup sharepoint and all kinds of poo poo but onenote is still a black hole of information that no one will ever find. a shared folder with text or word docs is infinitely more usable than onenote.

seriously, onenote is like what jwz says about regular expressions. some people, when confronted with disorganization, think "I know, I'll use OneNote!" now they have two problems.

just FYI as the resident football guy those surfaces are going to be a loving disaster. coaches HATE change, and there's no loving way a bunch of old white men are going to be using lovely tablets to do their game planning

if it lasts 4 weeks i'll be genuinely surprised. their screens are also not the right size for the photographs, which are usually letter-sized - a 16:9 image won't show you what you need

it's really good for storing your notes which don't necessarily have a well defined structure and don't need to be perfectly presented (eg lecture notes, personal plans)

in school I bought a convertible tablet laptop to take notes on. seemed like a great idea right? except for the entire laptop being an inch thick, the top of the screen to the actual image being like 5mm away and the pen giving you carpal tunnel syndrome

one note worked ok though in that it let you combine typing and scribbles. someone in a CS class used a full size laptop and a usb Wacom pad so he could type in the example code fragments and notes but draw all the nice diagrams and equations in without slowing down much. seemed like a much better use of money
