That's what JMS claims, and personally, I think it's total bullshit. 'Let's differentiate ourselves from the existing show by doing a space station!' is not exactly an idea they'd need to get from the outside, nor is 'Let's have a war!'. Any other similarities basically form from the necessities of the setting (getting a spaceship as the narrative started to expand beyond the station, etc) JMS was a great writer but he's proven himself many many times to also be a total grumpfart, I take a lot of what he says with a pinch of salt.

Engineering and Science supposedly being bad(ish) makes me sad  I don't really feel like rolling a tactical parsewhore character right now as I just spent plenty of time playing that role in another game. The wiki said something about Science ships having another deflector thingoranother now that supposedly makes them less bad, not sure what that means in practise. I will probably be mostly soloing things, both PvE and PvP. All things utility, healing and survivability tickle my arse at the moment. Also, I probably won't be hitting level cap any time soon. My first evening was spent solely rerolling dong and butt looking things in character creator. Will I really regret life if I roll Science? Or even Engineering?

You can be hugely successful in PVE with any captain or ship, so long as you show some basic common sense in regards to weapon choices, correct tatical consoles, a decent deflector/engine/shield set, etc. Fly whatever and whoever you like, have fun. PVP is a different beast entirely. If you're not a tac expect to take forever to kill semi-competent pubs. If you're a sci, great, we'd love to have you along on any goon teams as subnucleonic beam is the most annoying power and allows your teammates to kill people. If you're an eng, there's a couple of expert niche builds that'll get you some dps but that's top level poo poo, otherwise you'll do great as a team healer provided you're in a Recluse carrier.

Even establishing shots of the station were far fewer in frequency than the ship-based shows. Might as well not be in space! But to dismiss it out of hand was silly - like others have said, DS9 had a better first season than TNG. I thought it was a kind of funny reference to the pictures LordCo posted a few months ago of that guy from Abidjan holding the signs. If you don't have that context then it might just seem like a pretty lovely, irrelevant joke (which it still might to some). It's not exactly a pubbie frothing with rage or threatening to sue/kill Dentals or whatever, but I thought at the very least Lordco would enjoy it.

Ganking is apparently not so bad after the BO changes. But using all CrtD tac consoles could be interesting. Edit: If you were a rom your BOs were already criting most of the time, and if you were smart you can figure out how to get no power drain. These changes just make it so getting CrtD tac consoles will make you hit harder. Of course most PvPers are dumb and most likely haven't figured this out yet. Bloodly posted:Doubtful. It's pretty easy to do casual PVP in this game if you're intimidated by serious team PVP. You can either dick around in Ker'rat or go pug a PVP queue. Here's my guide to pugging PVP: Step 1) Don't suck. You don't have to be great just make sure you're not terrible. Step 2) Ignore tankers and try to gang up on anyone low on health. Step 3) Make sure to note which pubbies explode the fastest and go after them at every opportunity. Step 4) Don't get butthurt the 1 time in 10 your opponents are actually coordinated and you lose. Seriously it's not that hard and your get dil for doing it (check your dailies).
