Podcasters: Do you think Dave Meltzer overrates NJPW and their top stars? We've been discussing this in the NJPW thread and I think it could be a good topic for a podcast debate.

Yes. Why would there even be a debate?

ColonelJohnMatrix posted:Yeah I remember at the time that Backlash actually felt like Wrestlemania, whereas Wrestlemania 2000 felt like just a regular PPV (the all day Wrestlemania countdown show was great though). The tag ladder match was awesome but outside of that there was a lot of poo poo. Backlash had the awesome main event with the Stone Cold mega pop. I went and searched for the mega-pop from backlash and noticed something. This is an official WWE video and there's a shitload of chair shots: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYF6r22UjKU What's off is that everyone who takes an unprotected chair shot to the dome gets it edited to look like a video burp happens at the moment of impact, while those who take it on the back (Triple H) or get their hands up (Patterson) they show contact. Is this a new thing or has it been mentioned by Meltzer or anyone else? If so is it common on the network as well? I don't think it's a coincidence that the video wonks out at those exact moments only.

I'm at work and can't check right now, but if someone wants to cue up the 2000 Rumble and watch Foley get his brains scrambled they could check it out. The other reason I can't watch that right now is the fact that I won't be able to watch that ever again having watched the Foley documentary where he talks about his memory loss and not being able to ride roller-coasters anymore

That Goldust/Roddy Piper fight is a great watch after listening to that episode of Jericho. In addition to Piper punching Dust in the forehead 3 times it also looks like he knocked him in the head with the handle of the bat too.

If you're a fan of Paul Heyman, you really should listen to this week's mma hour. He talks for over an hour about pro wrestling and mma and I don't think he retells that many stories.

It's sort of shocking to me that Hulk Hogan hasn't been on one of the million Podcast One episodes. I REALLY want him to go on Austin's. I'm sure that will be one of the episodes where Stone Cold has one of his short term memory lapses.

I want him to show up on Roddy's just to see if they can co-exist long enough to not break anything.

Yeah a few months ago I'd suggest that Hogan would balk at the podcast circuit because he might have to be honest, but that was before Bischoff and Russo started making the rounds. Maybe Hogan demands some absurd sum to even appear.

Hogan probably isn't doing anyone else's podcasts because he's busy trying to get his own Hulkamaniac Prime Time Podcast or something.

He's been to G-1s live, and the opinion that this G1 is the best tournament in wrestling history is pretty widespread at this point. The tournament even corrects the main complaint with last year's booking too, so it's not like this is without perspective either.

When I saw random people on twitter comparing the two about a week ago I sat back and thought "Wow this G1 has been kind of great!" I think it is comparing it to any tournament, but both styles have their own quirks. One has more matches so it can have more great matches, while the other is more focused and streamlined so it will have less stinkers.

I kind of want to arrange a day/time where we all send Bryan Alvarez shoutouts out of nowhere because he's still advertising them on his site. Just a large amount of e-mails all appearing at the same time so it's impossible for him to miss.

How much of the idea being widespread is because of Dave constantly repeating it though? I have no problem with people saying it's their favourite, but the matter-of-fact proclamation of BEST EVER irks me. Has anyone making those claims gone back and watched every G1, Champion's Carnival, Real World Tag League, G1 Tag League, BOSJ, etc. to really back it up? Not to mention actually letting it settle a little since as I said before stuff always seems better when you're following it in real time, which hasn't been possible with Japanese stuff until very recently.

Not to mention actually letting it settle a little since as I said before stuff always seems better when you're following it in real time, which hasn't been possible with Japanese stuff until very recently. It sure sucks that people like saying stuff. People get excited when they are watching things they like, who cares? Dave has been more measured than many saying it will depend on the rest of the tournament, the booking, etc. He also only really gives his thoughts on this three times a week, so it's not like he can lead the real time wave of enthusiasm there has been for this tournament. The people who surprised me the most with the buzz for the tournament on twitter weren't people who pay any attention to Dave, they were people who used to watch tapes of puro and casually follow WWE now, and they were going wild for it. When people who aren't super fans feel the same way as a guy like Dave who has watched as much of that stuff as possible it's probably not hyperbole to consider a tournament as the greatest ever. I have no idea why you would demand someone to back up their opinion with that much thought and viewership of tournaments, voters for major sporting awards aren't even held to that kind of standard.
