Eh yeah. It seemed less 'informative in a funny way' and more 'informative and then be funny'. If that makes sense. That's why it ended on a overtly goofy note. It didn't even have an "And Now" segment, did it?

It's still an issue that needs to be brought up, this is a another way to keep the poor in an endless debt cycle, while skirting regulation with the most bullshit ways. Besides, I feel it was all worth it for the line "I call dingo".

I thought it was the weakest episode so far, but the show's long segment was great as always (and those segments are what makes the show vastly better and more informative than The Daily Show).

Okay, it was bound to happen. That was the first celebrity cameo I wasn't thrilled with.

They should have gotten a daytime talk or game show host.

I believe Western Sky was actually one of the few payday loan places that actually got taken down. That's how bad they were.

I did some research and Western Sky shut down last year because they basically got sued out of existence. They tried to say that literally NO laws other than that of their tribal council applied to them. Turns out that the Federal government and quite a few states don't take kindly to someone declaring themselves above the law!

I was sort of disappointed by the Ferguson coverage in that he seemed to completely gloss over any actual violence (like the gassings, LRADs, wooden bullets) and just focused on TANKS DUDE. The sort of police violence happening there is scary and isn't really particularly related to militarisation, which ended up being the main thrust of the episode.

I think he just wanted to get some attention on the generalized, nation-wide problem rather than really delving into the specifics of Ferguson. He also only very lightly touched on the racial component of the situation, which I think is much bigger and more serious in the country as a whole (or big chunks of it, anyway) than anyone wants to talk about.

Instead of talking about what they forgot, examine the facts that a) you're obviously informed about it already, b) it's not this shows job to inform people about what you think they should be informed about and c) it's a comedy show and perhaps there's not a lot of humor to squeeze from that particular topic. (Like racism in ferguson, the conflict in gaza, or journalists being hassled.)

I think this was because it's clearly far from over. Last night was the worst they've seen yet. Of course, that only makes it harder to wait three weeks until the next episode...

The equal wage segment was even more on point, IMO. It's incredible to me that instead of addressing an issue and how to resolve it, news networks think that they can just recalculate it into a non-issue (they can, because Oliver's the only one I've seen call them on their bullshit, so it was apparently working until now)

All the things you named is a symptom of the militarization of police, and the militarization of the police is a symptom of the increased will to use violence/fear from the constituency. If you have tanks, APCs and tear gas launchers and SWAT-teams and Apache attack helicopters the hurdle to use these is very, very low. And the more this stuff is there the more it will get used. The more you fear the people you are there to serve and protect the more you want military grade poo poo to keep them down.

Hi there, would you like to try some spicy products?
One significant detail he did point out is that you only get these military vehicles if you use them within a certain timeframe. I get that one would want to have applicants actually prove that they have necessity for the equipment they're looking to acquire, but not tying that proof of necessity to anything outside of "did you use it at all?" is pretty stupid.

To clarify, as an unwashed hipster from the socialist hellscape that is europe, I don't see any necessity in general for the type of hardware sold off to police forces at all, but not even checking what they might need it for is exuberantly stupid as opposed to giving it to them to execute search warrants and such, which is "just stupid".

Oh, that's because there isn't one at all. I don't know what any of this poo poo is supposed to be for besides loving with minorities. At least the drug bust excuse had some relation to reality, even if it'd be overkill for most raids. No one needs an APC that takes up three lanes of traffic for any police action, even if a terrorist just blew up a bomb somewhere down the street. It just doesn't make any sense.

Yeah, they're being given away to police departments for free under some programs. In some cases it's because departments are going 'well, we can buy an appropriate large enforcement vehicle for half a million dollars, or we can get this army beast for nothing' and going with the cheaper option.

My department got one about a month ago, and so far all it's been used for is being in the Fourth of July parade and for various department heads to take it joyriding through the streets.
