And thanks very much for the Wesley wiki. The advice of "don't mix beams and cannons" makes a lot of sense, but when you get your free ship at LCDR, what does the ship default with? Beams and Cannons.

DOFFs yes, Crafting no.

Cryptic is horrible with default builds. They just throw everything on them and let the pubbies figure it out. It's kinda like Darwin.

With crafting I'd say just do the 6000 xp projects. You'll get the trait unlocked after like 100 days with no effort expended. Beyond that just ignore it.

And they don't even give any good way for people to figure it out. There are tons of different skills, abilities, traits, equipment, all interacting with each other without any good way to see in-game exactly how they're interacting. There are stats on your character sheet, but they lie most of the time. Combat tends toward a mess of particle effects and neon lights everywhere*, with buffs and debuffs appearing and disappearing constantly. You get helpful icons showing what's affecting you, but there are a lot of them and they're too small to be easily identifiable. You can't even tell how your damage output compares to other people on your team without turning on logging and running an external program. I somtimes wonder if cryptic actively tries to make it hard to figure out how to be effective in the game.

Not to mention the majority of them don't have any tooltips. What's Plasma Fire do? I think it used to say on the website somewhere but it sure as hell doesn't say in game.

Yeah. STO is in this weird place where the mechanics are actually surprisingly complicated, there's a lot of different factors that interact in weird ways (skills, abilities, equipment, power levels), and there's very few useful tutorials... but it also doesn't really matter, since for the most part the game is balanced around the people who don't know how it works.

Everyone should take this walk down STO memory lane:

Check this page out for a glimpse at what launch era skills were like. Much confusion was had over the difference between Deflector Field and Deflector Dish. You also never got more than 2 examples what it would affect and absolutely no clue as to how it actually affected them. Of course there's also the energy and ship pigeonholing.

Yeah, it's important to keep in mind that the launch-era tooltips were somehow worse and even more useless, and they only added the "this is affected by skill X" to the full item/power information after the skill revamp. :psyduck:

I also note the fact that the Escort path carries both Attack Pattern Beta 3 and Attack Pattern Omega 3, where the Cruiser path and Science Vessel path gets nothing.

...I wonder what speed and turning was like with and without the ship skills? I mean, you regard most cruisers as 'slow turning' now. And those skills have been removed.

Hunh. I've been playing this game for a year, and never thought to see if there was a thread on it. Wish I'd seen the OP a few months ago since it would have saved me so much buyers remorse. Anyway here's a mundane question that I haven't seen on the STO forums, does anybody else have an issue with the new Xindi ships? To me they're totally invisible other than the partial box that marks all ships, and the new dreds frigates I can see. I kinda want to try one out, but I don't want to risk it in case I can't see my own ship.

*Graphic card is newish, and I've had zero other issues.

Maybe you need to force verify your files. Takes a little bit of time but it seems like you're missing textures or something.

When force verify doesn't work actually uninstalling the game, deleting all the files (since 'delete local content' on steam doesnt seem to do it), and reinstalling seems to help.

Yes, but they don't have the same effect they once did. People would use the engines because they would give a flat power boost to all systems, making them more useful than higher-mark engines. That, and mission replays didn't give scaled-up items.
