There was no boxing in of Attila. As soon as I saw him I put all my production towards an archer rush, because gently caress having him as a neighbor that close to me. Of course killing him is really easy when he only builds battering rams, so only his city was attacking me.

Culture victory on turn 362 on king. Poland is a beast civ, jesus. I probably could have had my choice of victory. I was #1 across the board. I crippled greece since they were next door and cut me off, and then just played nice with Attila and Shaka for most of the game, or sent them off on others. The two civs who went something other than order immediately went into revolutionary wave. Since I had the most happiness most of the game, that 3rd tier tourism perk just pushed me over the top.

Since this ties into the discussion from a page or two ago, were you the first to pick Order in this game? And other than the two you mentioned, did you find that other AI players were picking Order as their first choice?

Yeah. I hit ideologies way before anyone else, and I had a pretty big tourism lead too. Attila, who finished #2, went Autocracy. Polynesia was either #3 or #4 all game until I decapitated Shaka, so he went freedom. Those two hit about the same time as Korea, who went order. I was buddies with them all game though. After that, the remaining people went order.

That fits with my experience as well. It really does seem to take tourism influence into account when picking which ideology the AI is going for beyond "oh that one will give me an extra policy!"

If they don't have enough tiles that benefit they get butthurt. Ditto for how wonder-less civs get mad about Cultural Heritage Sites.

Tried out the Smarter AI mod that was mentioned a few pages ago. It's probably a decent start but it doesn't seem very impressive in its current state. The AI spends its cash buying things in cities, which means it's less competitive with city-states now because it won't bother to save up. Also, the AI builds more workers but doesn't protect them, which is an issue since barbarians also wander more. Overall it does not really make for a noticeably more difficult or more interesting game; a few boneheaded AI mistakes got fixed but they've just been replaced by new boneheaded AI mistakes. Hopefully it gets refined further.

Big cities chat. I have no idea how everyone gets such massive population in their capital without massive happiness penalties and slowing down. What is even the point at that level? 77 means every tile is worked and you just have a bunch of unemployed in your city.

Highest I've ever been was in the thirties. Maybe I've hit 50 at some point during a one-city challenge with India for the Bollywood achievement, but that was pre G&K.

Population is science! :science: With all of the science buildings built you should be getting something like 2-3 beakers per population point, if I recall correctly.

And unemployed citizens still contribute a hammer each, which isn't totally worthless.

Like what TooMuchAbstraction said, Population = Science. Also with Tradition and Freedom all those extra people don't cost that much in happiness. Besides this was just on King difficulty, so not like I needed to have any real plan.

Try playing on large-size maps. Nine times out of ten, it resolves the single landmass problem. They'll probably be connected by coast, though, unless you play on a huge map or with a very high sea level. Small continents is my specialty :v:

With monarchy and aristocracy a size 77 capital provides 38 unhappiness and 7 happiness for a total net unhappiness of only 31, if I understand its mechanics properly. That doesn't take into account buildings which provide local happiness and specialists in the Freedom tenet or Forbidden Palace or any of that.

Long story short is that Monarchy is stupidly powerful and only gets more powerful as the game progresses.

Monarchy only counts for your capital city though, right?

If I declared war on a friend and then completely wipe out every civ I'm in contact with, will I still get a negative modifier with future civs I meet?

Yes, but it's half unhappiness for citizens in what will almost certainly be your largest city. It's easy to get 40 citizens in your capital, which means that one social policy is effectively giving you +20 happiness.

Civs don't care if you've removed another civ as long as they've never met the civ in question. I'm pretty sure that extends to backstabbing modifiers; I mean, how would they know? But I wouldn't put it past Firaxis to screw that up.

Warmonger penalties don't apply to civs you come in contact with after the fact. The civs that you were in contact with will still be denouncing you for the rest of the game though. I'm asking about the negative backstab modifier, which does apply for civs you contact after backstabbing + genociding a civ.

So if I actually managed to kill off washington before contacting indonesia, would I still have a negative modifier for declaring war on my 'friend' korea while I was allied with them?

Spain tricked me into that last game. I had a DoF with someone (I forget who now), and there were like 11 turns left on it, and she comes along and asks if I want to go to war with them. I do, and I messed up the timing by 1 turn, so we both go to war and I end up with big negative diplo modifiers for being a warmonger AND declaring on someone I had a DoF with. But it was your idea, Izzy!

One of the things that bugs me about CiV is that there's no way to go from the diplomacy screen to check on your other screens, so you have to just try to remember what the status of your agreements are.

One of the goons (Putin it in mah rear end) in our GMR game has disappeared and it doesn't look like he's coming back. So, we're now looking to get a replacement in. Normally I'd let the AI takeover but we're at a bit of an *ahem* dramatic juncture and it would be woefully anticlimactic if we didn't give the Civ at least some level of competence (i.e. a human).

The Civ in question is Mongolia, currently at war with England and having just developed Keshik technology. If that sounds fun let me know and I'll make arrangements to get you into the game. If you want to know more, I and the other players can fill you in on what they know, but since Putin isn't around to fill you in on the situation from Mongolia's perspective, there will no doubt be a rat race among everyone else to give you their version of events (see: lies and propaganda) to either win an ally or set you up for a tremendous backstab.

The game is being played via GMR - if you're not familiar with it, there's a post on the steam group.

Its really weird, because if I recall correctly they had that in Civ 4 as well. No idea why they would take it out.

There are really a lot of things they could do to improve the diplomacy in the Civ series. Like a slider to tell you what the AI thinks about your treaty and how much more you would need to do to get them to accept. I'd kill for that.
