I love this show. Anyone got an idea about the sales numbers for Haikyuu, and the likelihood of a second season?

K. Flaps posted:Anyone got an idea about the sales numbers for Haikyuu, and the likelihood of a second season? Vol 1 of the anime has sold over 30k, which makes it a megahit. If there's more manga, there's no way they'll pass up on animating it.

are there enough chapters though? this episode is like chapter 53 and there are only 120 or so. it might be a while before they could make a season 2

It's not that weird for a show to take a year off to get enough manga material, so the next season will probably be in 2016.

Sports manga is surprisingly a ton of fun: All-rounder Meguru is probably my favorite manga now and the Yowamushi pedal is fun too. Where else should I look besides the stuff in the OP? I'm a bit picky about the sport in question (gently caress ballgames) and it seems that a lot of the stuff isn't too sport specific, like if it's about swimming it's just fanservice or something.

Hajime no Ippo, Initial D, Hikaru no Go, all great titles with a sports shounen feel. If you can stand at least trying ball games, Slam Dunk and Major are both excellent.

The animation is great, but beyond that the characters are written in a way that pulls you in and makes their obstacles and struggles together and individually really tense. This sense is furthered because victory isn't a given for the protagonists, and burning spirit isn't always going to win the day. It's great because it means you can't just assume you know the outcome like you can with a number of more cliched sports series that have been done. Chihayafuru is great. I like Baby Steps for much the same reason. Eichiro loses a lot, so there's actually a huge amount of tension in every major match.ManOfTheYear posted:All-rounder Meguru is probably my favorite manga now

Sindai posted:If you like that you'll probably like Teppu. I actually checked out Teppu, but didn't like it at all. It's so much focused on the drama of the characters that MMA ends up on background and the fights weren't too interesting. The fights and training in Meguru is basically fighting pornography and shows how much the author is in love with fighting, it's just great. There were some attemps at serious drama with the yakuza stuff and so on but really quickly the manga went "ehhh, gently caress it" and basically focused on the sport and has some light slice of life stuff to accompany the training. There's some fanservice but compared to a lot of other manga it's extremely light. I love it. I'll check Chihayafuru out, but what the hell they are playing? Some traditional japanese card game? What is that? I spent this night reading Eyeshield 21 which was a very cartoony manga about american football and it was alright, laughed out loud a couple of times but nothing too memorable. I also tried to check out one manga about swimming and another about water polo but those were horrible fanservice smut bullshit. Also one manga about kickboxing but it was the same thing. What is it with manga about an bland and uninteresting loser male character ending up with two or three women where one is a saint who looks after the guy no matter what, one girl who supposedly hates the main character but is actually competing for his attention and a coach/teacher/sensei with the biggest boobs who exists to tease the main character? More or less that description fits a huge percent of manga out there. I just wanted to learn about water polo. Play the game, damnit

It's called Karuta, but don't worry, the Anime doesn't expect you to know anything about it before you start watching. I'm pretty sure that everyone recommending it didn't know anything about the game before watching it either. The basics: players listen to a reader recite the first half of a poem, and then try to grab the card with the second half of the poem out of the cards in front of them.

Everything I like has balls. 703X and Kono Oto Tomare! are both good sports manga that aren't about sports. There's also Noririn, which is about bike racing, although nobody has been translating it for years.

To elaborate, it's about a koto (Japanese stringed instrument) club that practices for music competitions and the like. The author throws in information about music scores/practice methods that I really like along with likable characters and art style.

Don't be put off by the fact that it's about such an obscure and strange sport. The show explains the sport really well and in spite of being a card game it really is a true sport that emphasizes reaction time, technique and strategy. The characters are really fun too.

I went to the Boston children's museum with my nephew and they were having a Japaneese new year thing, and one of the activities was showing kids how to play a simplified version of Karuta. It was bizarre.

Everything Burrito posted:The character development through this last match has been pretty great. I love that Kageyama and Sugawara can be competitive with each other without being needlessly antagonistic and push each other to improve. Yeah. Speaking of character development, (Haikyuu ep 21) when Suga substitutes with Kageyama, he's about to say 「勝てよ」 but changes his mind, going instead with 「勝つぞ」. While the CR subs just have this translated as "Let's win!" in both cases, my interpretation is that the former should have been translated along the lines of "Go win this!" with the latter being "Let's win this!" It's a display of how Suga changes his mindset, going from being a bystander asking others to win, to being a part of the team at all times even if he's not active on the court. Not sure if the subs conveyed that. Maybe I'm just reading too much into it.

Everything Burrito posted:How does Kuroko compare to Haikyuu? Does it have the same kind of goofiness and team interaction? I think so. Both have main characters that are hard to dislike. It's refreshing that the POV protagonist isn't a straight up god in the sport.

Personally, I don't think KnB has the same goofiness as Haikyuu, but it does some have some interesting characters. I found that it dragged on too much (I watched season 1 and the first couple episodes of season 2), and I'd get bored with the matches half way through. That's one thing I like about Haikyuu, they don't show you every goddamn point they make in the game. I couldn't keep up with the characters either, there were way too many. I am more interested in volleyball than basketball, so I might be biased too. That said, I do find myself going back and reading chapters of the manga here and there because I find some of the stories interesting! Give it a shot, it does have some funny moments and characters.

Everything Burrito posted:How does Kuroko compare to Haikyuu? Does it have the same kind of goofiness and team interaction? Yeah it does, but it also has a bit of a slow start though, but episode six is where things really get rolling. The anime does change the order of some minor events in the manga, but it also does a better job with the jokes, especially with the omake shorts. Those are only on the blu-rays, but it should be easy enough to find them on youtube.

Sounds good. I was thinking about starting it after Haikyuu wraps up but wasn't sure if it was the same sort of show or if it was more serious. As far as sport shows go, I really don't care about the sport part so they could be playing virtually anything as long as it has strong characters and doesn't take itself too seriously.

I think Kuroko no Basket is a lot closer to the likes of Prince of Tennis than Haikyuu. They're in their own little area of sports shounen, where it's like watching super powered battles with tennis balls or basket balls as weapons. I still love them, mind you.

Kuroko No Basket is also between Haikyuu and Free! in the whole 'are they gay or not????' spectrum, if that kind of thing bothers you. It's the sport anime that got me to watch sport anime though!

The first season has a lot of it between Kuroko and Taiga. The second season seemed to lighten up on it. All the side characters are straight as hell though. Also between Kuroko/Taiga and the other prodigies. The most overt being the rant about how whats his face the Street Ball player going 'I was your light, and you my shadow. We were meant to be together. So why would you play with this person, who could NEVER be your light?!'
