Ehhh, you need to elaborate more. Because Xenogears is pretty standard in scope even if the hybrid fantasy/tech setting isn't widely used. I'd say the early Tales games like Phantasia and Destiny. Up to a point Tales games had this thing where they give you a fake out ending before flipping the world on its head FF6 style.

Doesn't every Tales of game do that?

Also gay bodybuilding vampire who gets new weapons by finding huge poo poo to powerlift and has a MAN FESTIVAL sidequest.

And Gepetto, who attacks with dolls that he upgrades with dresses that he gets by trading gay porn he finds around the world.

Some are more opaque than others. Eternia has a separate world but they don't pull the "it's over! but not really" card. Abyss does it too early to have any real impact (which also fucks up the economy which I both liked and loving hated) but Destiny legitimately got me when I first played it.

Shadow Hearts directly tied the solidarity of its mechanics to the goofy world building on like a 1 to 1 basis. SH 3 is super tight mechanically but you end up going to the second to last dungeon or so before whacky poo poo stops coming up.

I've been playing Tales of Heroes (there isn't a thread for this, right?) and occasionally referencing a sidequest guide. I just discovered I had missed a sidequest in chapter 1 (involving the amber tower, I think?)! My gamer ocd immediately fired up and now i'm kind of anxious to continue the game in fear of missing interesting plot or rewards somewhere down the line. I thought I was safe when every sidequest was clearly marked in your log and acquired from the bulletin board but no, they had to have this single one that is completely unmarked. :negative:

So what I'm asking is, is this the sort of game where me missing this sidequest will lead to me missing a huge thing 50 hours later in the game? I suppose I have sidequest paranoia from the Tales series.

No, the hidden sidequests are small standalone things that don't matter at all in the long run. All you'll miss out on is some extra BP. Use a guide if you're a super completionist dude, but you're not missing anything important if you don't get every sidequest.

Trails itself doesn't have a thread, but there's a megathread for games by its developer, Falcom:

Now I want a sci-fi RPG and of course there's nothing really to play after you've played the usual flagships. I now find myself playing some Event Horizon pixel-indie game called Halfway - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKXxA382xPs which is not too terrible, but really easy so far.

If you're down with DOS RPGs, Albion is a pretty good sci fi one, though it is pretty much proto-Avatar, so you spend most of it being "Advanced technology dude on a more primitive technology planet." Runs well in DOSBox, and is abandonware, so it's easy to track down.

Infinite Space really made me crave a Suikoden style space-merc style game but man, I don't understand why science fiction is rare in this realm.

Space Rangers 2 is really good and I would classify it an RPG. It's one of those European kitchen sink games so expect tons of jank but unprecedented emergent gameplay. There's an omnipresent enemy force that rampages across the galaxy and other space mercs will fight them. The economy will shift based on war and technology gets smaller and cheaper over time. It's one of the few video games, let alone RPGs, that make you feel like a small player in a greater conflict rather than the only person in the universe actually fighting back the badguys.

The plot managed to be worse than 3's (which was admittedly okay except for the really dumb plot twist halfway through.)

4 openly showed how things are declining in Japan. There's more and more pandering to the creeps since they blow tons of money on overpriced figures and such.

That side has been there since at least the 90s but not much from it left Japan until maybe the last decade.

Edit: \/ 3 is saved a lot by a fairly likable cast.

None of the cast have any actual development. They're just there so how can they be likable? And no, SO3's plot is not better than 4's. Why? Because SO4 was written by people with a 3-year-old's understanding of storytelling while Till the End of Time was written by a group of deranged monkeys.

So you are on this fantasy planet.
And you go into a war on this fantasy planet.
And you spetn an entire disk building up one side in this fantasy war.
And then the big epic battle starts.
Only aliens invade then. The Vandeni I believe, the apparent villains of the piece.
Only wait, now they are gone and you are fighting the "Creator."
And now you re in another dimension.

Oh and did I mention on this fantasy planet you happened upon this random clone of your friend who is dying and that subplot contributes loving nothing?

SO4 understands the beginning of a story goes to the middle of the story which goes to the end of a story. You find a Grigori on your first planet, and then another on the second planet, and then you learn about them on your third world, and thenadmittedly I'm not sure about the whole going into the past thing but whatever, and then you go to the next planet which is about uncovering your main character's origins, and then on the next planet you learn more about Grigori and then the same for the next world and then finally you beat the Grigori as a final boss.

As opposed to Star Ocean 3 where you get a dragon and make a Symbological Superweapon for no reason and your final boss is LUCIFER. Oh and the ending where Lucifer deletes the universe but everyone is okay because.....uh....

I don't care if SO4 is the stupidest story ever, it's coherent and cohesive. SO3's story is two different games mashed into one unholy abomination.

And finally, FATE LINEGOD is a stupider name than Edge Maverick ever will be.

Star Ocean 3 is a piece of poo poo in all ways and I hate it. People only hate it less than 4 because it's a decade old and they've forgotten the voice-acting, the bland characters, the incoherent storyline and MP Death.

SO3 didn't make a whole lot of sense, but it wasn't loving gross like SO4 was. I just kinda reveled in the chaos of it all when I played through it, and had a lot of fun with the combat.

I'm still plugging away at Valkyria Chronicles 3. I've actually sunk an obscene number of hours into it without even really paying attention, I just keep getting new characters and welp gotta turn them into Elites and finish their fragments. I'll probably break 100 hours before all is said and done.

I hate, hate missions that let the enemy go first. There's been like 3 or 4 like that starting in chapter 11 where they wind up killing most of your team before they even have a chance to move. This is especially annoying when all of a sudden all enemies have turned into Elites and hit like a truck.

I'd say "complex" as in many moving, working parts meshed in with the overall plot, that relate to and effect each other. A backstory that spans several hundred or thousands of years. Cities and countries have their own unique culture and history.

Another example I think would be the Suikoden series.

To a lesser extent Seiken Densetsu 3 has three major plots and multiple subplots that interweave and events you see differ based on your starting character.
