Cymbal Monkey posted:Slint are probably the most over rated post-rock band on the planet anyway. This doesn't surprise me. What's really funny is when people try to tell anyone that Tweez was a good record. That said, "Good Morning Captain", "Washer" and bits of their other songs really are pretty great especially considering how young they were and how nothing like it had been done around them at all. The documentary does a good job of showing that, I think.

Hey, look, I'm a music reviewer now! I've started writing for Echoes and Dust!. You should read some things there. It's a little less focused than Arctic Drones there's good stuff there. Let me know if there's something exciting coming out that I should review.

Yeah, Jason (the drummer) hosed up his hand pretty badly. It's why they cancelled their Europe tour a year or 2 ago and went over 6 months without playing at all. Also I noticed the record label they were going to be released with seems to have disassociated with them, so whatever happened there probably didn't help either

The new Crippled Black Phoenix album is very, very good. It's a bit more like their earlier stuff but very heavy. Some of the songs still sound kind of like Pink Floyd in a good way.

I'm super jealous. I booked a trip to SF next month but I would've done it this month had I known they were going to be there. Apparently the new Maybeshewill album leaked but they posted about it on Facebook and said the leak is hosed up. They're gonna start streaming the album in its proper form on Monday, and they said they realize people are gonna their album but they want people to at least hear it the proper way if they do. Also, ABC News posted:The name of the militant Islamic group ISIS is probably one of the most reviled names in the country at the moment. It is also the name of a defunct post-metal rock band with the same name that is getting "off color comments" on its Facebook page. The new This Will Destroy You album, Another Language, is out there and it's...alright, but not blowing me away. Which is kinda how I felt about Tunnel Blanket the first time I heard it, but after re-listening to that album a while later, I realized I liked it more than I'd originally decided. But I don't know if the same will be true of this one if I revisit it in a year or two. It has a handful of good moments but I feel like all the good moments run together and they're outweighed by filler. Overall, this is more of an ambient album than a post-rock one, and I guess it's just not the brand of ambient music that really does much for me. On the Wiki for this album, it says this: quote:According to the band, Another Language's sound is "more upbeat and rhythmic" than their previous work. They also described the sound of the album with the genre "doomgaze", a portmanteau of the words doom metal and shoegaze. Honestly, I was more bored by it than I was enthralled by it. I haven't heard Fair Youth yet, but I'm really hoping that makes up for this album being sort of a disappointment. But hell, it's Maybeshewill, so I have no doubt that it will. e: Hahaha, okay, yeah, Fair Youth blows Another Language away. That is so much more my poo poo. Listening to it now. I can buy "more upbeat and rhythmic" but I'm not sure how they go from that to "doomgaze." I guess "Memory Loss" has a bit of a doomy feel to it? Fair Youth is pretty awesome. e: New Tides from Nebula. Not clear on exactly what this is, I guess it's a mix of old and new material. chunkles fucked around with this message at 00:32 on Aug 28, 2014 |

So Mono's new album, which comes out October 28th, is gonna be a double album: The Last Dawn and Rays of Darkness. They're lighter and darker albums respectively. Apparently there won't be any more string section overloads like there were on For My Parents. They're also making shorter, more concise tracks this time around. The Last Dawn Rays of Darkness First track premiere: "Where We Begin" from The Last Dawn. https://soundcloud.com/temporary-residence-ltd-1/mono-where-we-begin After new TWDY being a disappointment, I'm really hoping new Mono totally blows me away. That track is a good sign, at least.

Cymbal Monkey posted:loving incredible. I've been both times and both were stunning. Cleft absolutely stole the show though. Definitely agree that Cleft was great. I also really liked AK/DK - not the same type of music, but just as 'fun.' Some of the really emotionally serious bands (EF, Russian Circles, Nordic Giants) were really impressive. The same crowd that went nuts for Cleft was introspective and beard-scratching for these guys. There were some total surprises, too - Adding Machine's synthpop/shoegaze blend, Jamie Lenman's death metal riffing and making fun of posers, Baby Godzilla crowdsurfing on top of a Marshall stack and rolling around in the mud.. For me, the best thing was seeing the really adventurous band setups (Human Pyramids had like 20 people on stage? Theo did everything himself with loopers, Mutiny on the Bounty play aluminum guitars through organ synths?). I flew across the ocean to this knowing only 3 of the bands, saw about 30 and enjoyed every single one. Definitely recommended to anyone who's a fan of music and/or white guys with dreadlocks.
